1. After my close reading of "Story in Harlem Slang", it can be said that the Harlem Slang is unique to people from Harlem and if you are not from Harlem or an Harlemese, you might not understand the message they are trying to convey. The author, Zora Neale shows us how this slang is unique through Jelly and Sweet back's character. Both characters communicate using their Harlem Slangs and spent a lot of time trying to seem bigger than they are to one another through lying about the women they’ve been with and the money they have received from them. Jelly decodes his words by using words and terms whereby Sweetback would grab quickly, he said "Naw-naw-naw-now Sweet Back, long as you been knowing me, you ain't never seen me with nothing but …show more content…
One conclusion that can be drawn about the setting of "Story in Harlem Slang" is that Harlem is a place whereby people are free to live whatever kind of lifestyle they want to live. "Story in Harlem Slang” begins with Jelly who is characterized as a pimp. A pimp in Zora Neale Hurston’s dictionary is a male prostitute. Jelly is all about stalking women in exchange for food and money because this is the only way he knows how to survive. Story in Harlem Slang focuses on two good friends, Jelly and Sweet back and their environments as they joke and have a dialogue after bumping into each other in Harlem. The two buddies Broke and hungry, puts on a show for each other, bragging about how they've got rich and beautiful women. Both characters left their lives in the south to have an easy life and make money in the North, specifically Harlem. They both roam around for meals and harass young women as they walk by them, trying to get them to take one of them out for dinner and give them pocket money. Harlem became a place for them whereby they could depend on women passing by for survival. Jelly said "How can I be broke when I got the best woman in Harlem? If I ask her for a dime, she'll give me a ten-dollar bill. Ask her for a drink of likker, and she'll buy me a whiskey still. If I'm lyin' I'm flyin'!" (pg.119). This shows how Jelly was comfortable being a pimp in Harlem.This shows how both characters were trying to take the easy way out and Harlem was the right place for them
If this story was told in a woman’s point of view, the entire story would change since it would be more of the girl’s journey from her home, her thoughts on the boy and the “procedure” she would follow and behavior she would exhibit in front of the boy. He uses casual diction in his story such as: “Wait and after an hour go out to your corner. The neighborhood is full of traffic. Give one of your boys a shout and when he says, Are you still waiting on that bitch? The stories that the author told were very insightful to what life was like for an African American living in the south during this time period. First the author pointed out how differently blacks and whites lived. She stated “They owned the whole damn town. The majority of whites had it made in the shade. Living on easy street, they inhabited grand houses ranging from turn-of-the-century clapboards to historics”(pg 35). The blacks in the town didn’t live in these grand homes, they worked in them. Even in today’s time I can drive around, and look at the differences between the living conditions in the areas that are dominated by whites, and the areas that are dominated by blacks. Racial inequalities are still very prevalent In today’s society.
“Harlem Night Song” is written by Langston Hughes. “Harlem” is also written by Langston Hughes. In “Harlem Night Song”, the speaker asks his love to spend the night roaming through Harlem. In “Harlem”, the speaker wonders what happens if a goal is put off. The speaker in “Harlem Night Song” is a African-American person in Harlem going on a date.
Mrs. Hurston uses Southern Black dialect through out the book. This is appropriate because all of the dialog is between Blacks who grew up in the deep South. Some authors that write in a dialect totally confuse their readers. However, Mrs. Hurston’s writing does not confuse us at all. One particular example of this is on page 102. Tea Cake starts off saying, "‘Hello, Mis’ Janie, Ah hope Ah woke you up.’ ‘Yo sho did, Tea Cake. Come in and rest yo’ hat. Whut you doin’ out so soon dis mornin’?’" Janie replied. This dialog is easily to understand. The reader really gets the feeling of the speech because reading it is just like listening to it. Mrs. Neale also knows where to stop writing in dialect. All of the narration and description in the book are in plain English: she does not confuse us by putting narration in dialect, only the speech of characters is in dialect. This part of Zora Neale Hurston’s art adds to the story without confusing the reader.
Living in poverty is not easy. Sometimes you can’t get the education you want, but it’s the key to breaking it. Harlem’s harsh living is difficult for Buddy along with its outside influences that can get in your way. In the story “Sweet Potato Pie” by Eugenia Collier, Buddy begins his life in poverty and then graduates college and becomes a professor. Buddy and his family are hardworking and want to break the chain of poverty. He is a very dynamic character. Buddy teaches us a few life lessons such as, sacrifice for family, love which can be shown greater than words can, and perseverance.
Like the story would be hard to follow if it was set in a different time period or even a different part in the world, the reader would be so confused and lost. This story’s setting being in Harlem in the late 1930s makes the reader understand why the black people don’t like the white people. The reader feels pulled into this story as they read it because Hughes really makes you think about what’s going on.
In the essay if Black English Isn’t a Language, Then Tell Me, What is? by James Baldwin and Mother Tongue by Amy Tan both shows idea of uses of slang and language in different context. Baldwin states that how language has changed and evolved overtime, Baldwin describes how black English were used as white English, in civil rights movement where blacks were treated as slaves and the used slang language to communicate so that the whites won’t understand. This slang was taken from black language and now everyone uses to make the communication short. In the essay Mother Tongue Tan explains that how language could affect people from different culture. Tan states that how Asian students in America struggle in English. Tan also states that her mother is smart but she couldn’t communicate in English. Tan thinks that’s a big disadvantage for her mother and people coming from different countries cannot show their talent because of their weakness in communication.
Since the 1930’s until now, studies show that about 64% of kids and teens have been using slang terms in their school work. It is amazing what some of them are. Slang is used all of the time by almost all people and has changed a lot over the past decades. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses a child’s perspective to show how slang has changed from the 1930’s until today.
An adequate, detailed description of the setting in ay novel is essential to the reader’s experience. The reader is not provided with any visual cues (unless it is a rare case and the book is illustrated) and must rely solely on the author’s writing ability to achieve a sense of full emersion into the storyline. When the reader is provided with vague detail it is easy for the individual to become frustrated and quickly lose interest. In Chester Himes novel “A Rage in Harlem”, Himes does an excellent job of putting the reader directly in the center of twentieth century Harlem. At times his descriptive writing style border on the extreme, perhaps even making the reader in an emotionally uncomfortable situation. However, with his unique writing style was able to bring the city of Harlem to life for many individuals, who if not to Himes, would have never been exposed to the reality of Harlem and individuals who “lived” Harlem every single day of their lives.

The Harlem Renaissance was a time of racism, injustice, and importance. Somewhere in between the 1920s and 1930s an African American movement occurred in Harlem, New York City. The Harlem Renaissance exalted the unique culture of African-Americans and redefined African-American expression. It was the result of Blacks migrating in the North, mostly Chicago and New York. There were many significant figures, both male and female, that had taken part in the Harlem Renaissance. Ida B. Wells and Langston Hughes exemplify the like and work of this movement.
The Harlem Renaissance, originally known as “the New Negro Movement”, was a cultural, social, and artistic movement during the 1920’s that took place in Harlem. This movement occurred after the World War I and drew in many African Americans who wanted to escape from the South to the North where they could freely express their artistic abilities. The 1920’s were a period or rapid growth and change in America. After World War I American’s were introduced to a lifestyle of lavishness they had never encountered before. It was a period of radical thought and ideas. It was in this time period that the idea of the Harlem Renaissance was born. The ideology behind the Harlem Renaissance was to create the image of the “New Negro”. The image of African-American’s changed from rural, uneducated “peasants” to urban, sophisticated, cosmopolites. Literature and poetry abounded. Jazz music and the clubs where it was performed at became social “hotspots”. Harlem was the epitome of the “New Negro”. However, things weren’t as sunny as they appeared. Many felt that the Harlem Renaissance itself wasn’t so much a celebration of Black culture, but rather a regurgitation of White ideals. To these African-Americans, the Harlem Renaissance represented conformity and submission to the White culture. Yet there were also those who were not even given the opportunity to be a part of the Harlem Renaissance. The poor Blacks in the South never received any of the racial tolerance up north. They lived in a world of racism and the Ku Klux Klan. The Harlem Renaissance did not redefine African-American expression. This can be seen through the funding dependence on White Americans, the continued spread of racism and the failure to acknowledge the rights of poor Southern African-Americans.
“Harlem” by Langston Hughes is a poem that talks about what happens when we postpones our dreams. The poem is made up of a series of similes and it ends with a metaphor. The objective of the poem is to get us to think about what happens to a dream that is put off, postponed; what happens when we create our very own shelve of dreams? The “dream” refers to a goal in life, not the dreams we have while sleeping, but our deepest desires. There are many ways to understand this poem; it varies from person to person. Some may see this poem as talking about just dreams in general. Others may see it as African-American’s dreams.
