Steven Universe is an American animated show on Cartoon Network created by Rebecca Sugar and aired in November of 2013. The show is an action-packed coming-of-age story about Steven Quartz Universe, a 14-year-old half human, half-Gem boy and his adventures with the Crystal Gems; Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl. While the plot itself is a simple “save the world while learning new powers” cliché, fans crave more to the lore and relationships that are shown in the show. From Steve making new friends to Garnet being the literal embodiment of a romantic relationship; I believe that Steven Universe is challenging the social roles and expectations; and as a fan of the show, I don’t believe that it gets enough recognition for it. As I previously stated, Steven Universe is half human and half-Gem. A Gem is an alien race that is led by their matriarchal body of Gem leaders, The Great Diamond Authority. Gems are similar to advanced …show more content…
This being would sometimes have a mix of the Gems physical features and personalities which can be a whole new person when completed. This is usually done with a fusion dance but in dire situations, a touch would do just fine. Gannet is a fusion between Ruby and Sapphire. Ruby is quick to anger and is violent during her fuse, but she’ll always apologize if she went too far in her rage. Sapphire, on the other hand, is level-headed and patient, but hardly shows her emotions to others which makes her seem passive aggressive. As Garnet, they lead the group. She once referenced herself as “Mom Universe”, which is fitting since she more a responsible mother figure then Pearl. Where Pearl fears of Steven hurting himself, Garnet has faith in his ideas and encourages him to pursue them. She’s usually composed and seeming emotionless, a trait from Sapphire; but in the more recent episodes, she started to be more
The first time I heard the name, Neil deGrasse Tyson, was when my grandfather showed me an article Tyson had written. In the article, Tyson suggested 7 books a person should read so they can be more intelligent. Not knowing Tyson was an astrophysicist at the time, I skimmed over the material because I saw no validity in the argument. However, I did wonder why Tyson recommended the Bible as the number one book to read. I asked my grandfather, who coincidentally is also a astrophysicist, why I should read the Bible, but he could not think of a reason. After getting the chance to research Tyson, I have begun to understand his intelligence and able to answer my question. Moreover, Tyson is a scientist who defies social barriers because he wants to inspire the world in several specific ways.
Like Yin and Yang, Pearl generates all things around her and is a necessity to this story. Without Pearl, there would be no story. Pearl teaches everyone in the novel and the readers that someone or something can be what brings two people together, good outcomes can arise from irresponsible choices, and finally that in our own way we all symbolize something greater than we consider ourselves to
Pearl had a great role in the scarlet letter. Her differences from the other Puritan children showed the reader the effect Pearls life had on her personality. Pearl was seen as the Devil’s child or a child from sin. Pearl proved to be quite the opposite, although she wasn't quite a human character but more of a symbol she added a touch of love and beauty to a story filled with hate and pain. Pearl really was the ray of sunshine in this world. Though she came from something seen as a sin she was truly a blessing. She helped her mom through her times of grief and she brought Dimmesdale out of hiding. In the end she was the only pure and true individual. Pearl was an amazing child who gave this story light.
Star Trek took the world by storm with its futuristic scenarios and outlandish ideas, which opened up the doors for science fiction in America as it gained recognition and popularity all across the world. It started as a television series in the 1960’s to becoming a multi-billion dollar franchise including 5 television series, 12 movies, and selling a magnitude of merchandise (Star Trek). People tend to look past the fact that Star Trek was so influential on the world, all they see is men and women in weird suits fighting aliens in space. But, what people don’t see is the how Star Trek inspired people and events that have drastically impacted not only America, but eventually the whole world. Things like the non-vehicular cell phone, iPad, and other devices and people were all inspired by the series (Star Trek). Fans dedicate themselves to Star Trek conventions and replica building and fanfiction. They even consider themselves part of the Star Trek family, calling themselves ‘Trekkies’ or ‘Trekkers’ (Star Trek). Star Trek fans have even gone as far as of learning to speak Klingon and use the Vulcan salute as a symbol to recognize another fan (Star Trek).
...ung lady with a bright future ahead of her. Pearl was a stunning character because of her talented perceptive skills, the effect she had on her mother, and the truthful character she was throughout the novel.
Pearl is an influential character in Scarlet Letter. Pearl starts out as an infant; “whose innocent life had sprung, by the inscrutable decree of Providence, a lovely and immortal flower, out of the rank luxuriance of a guilty passion” (Hawthorne, 81). Pearl is a fiery and bipolar character and she acts differently in many situations. Her behavior is very unpredictable and dangerous at times. Many foreshadow that she is going to act in a way but she does quite the opposite. Pearl Prynne is never influenced by anyone and does not have a role model just as no one looks up to Pearl. In a way she is a recluse.
- Pearl was Hester and Dimmesdale’s daughter. She was given her name because she was precious and valuable. She was very clever, imaginative, and bratty. Pearl was a very significant character, because she reminded Hester of her sins and love affair.
Pearl was the result of Dimmesdale and Hester committing adultery. She has wild behavior and serves as a reminder to Hester of her sin, as she reminds her of the Scarlet Letter. She plays a vital role in pushing the story along. Her attitude towards Dimmesdale changes as time goes on. At first, she puts her hand on his cheek and accepts him. Then, she regards him as man entangled in the devil’s doings. Then, she wouldn’t accept him as her father until he revealed himself as her father. At last, she accepts him as her father as he reveals himself on the scaffold. She could finally live her life as a person, instead of this constant reminder to her parents of their sin. The changing attitudes of Pearl towards Dimmesdale really shows how influential Pearl is and how it reflects on the story
After her release from confinement, Prynne had to meet with the men of the power structure to decide whether or not Prynne was allowed to keep Pearl. The power structure was deeply concerned with entrusting a child to, “the guidance of one who hath stumbled and fallen, amid the pitfalls of this world” (101). However, Prynne fights back, as well as calling out for Dimmesdale to defend her. In this battle against men of high authority, Prynne is shown to be persevering through their waves of arguments against her while doing everything she can to keep Pearl. This displays Prynne’s deep love for Pearl, as well as further developing her character of responsibility as a mother.
Pearl, the bastard-daughter character, represents the world of nature (truth), a nature-friendly pre-Christian time in mankind's history and the struggle between the town (societal taboos) and the simpler way of forest (respect for the truth).

Carl Sagan: astronomer, astrophysicist, cosmologist, author, skeptic, and visionary. The middle of the twentieth century was clad in scientific advancements that opened up the realm of our universe to the world. At the head of this exploration was Carl Sagan, a pioneer of sorts. Aside from his countless contributions to the scientific community, he backed a new understanding of the cosmos to the more pedestrian population of the world.
Pearl is obviously a definite person, but she is also a definite symbol of many things. First, she is a distinct symbol of the relationship between Hester and Dimmesdale. She is a representative of the passion, which came with Hester's sin of adultery. Second, she is an active reminder of Hester's sin besides the letter A on her breast. And lastly, Pearl becomes mesmerized by her mother's scarlet letter. She pelts the letter with flowers, 'covering the mother's breast with hurts for which she could find no balm in this world.'; Pearl's 'inevitable tendency to hover about the enigma of the scarlet letter'; is fully developed when Pearl imitates her mother by placing a seaweed letter A on her own breast.
...efers to her being a blessing to Hester. Pearl gives Hester a reason to live, and helps to keep Hester's spirits strong.
Pearl is a very important character in the book, The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Although the majority of the story focuses on Hester, Dimmesdale, and Chillingworth, Pearl is the person who ties them all together. Pearl was born from Hester illegitimately. Even though Dimmesdale is her father, this is not revealed until the end of the story. Hawthorne uses Pearl as many symbols throughout the book. Pearl is the symbol of Hester and Dimmesdale’s sin. However, she is more than that. Pearl represents sin, hope, change, and truth.
