Steven Spielberg's Dyslexia
When you ask people who is one of the most successful filmmakers of all time, most people would say Steven Spielberg. That is true, but not everyone knows that he has been suffering with dyslexia his entire life. In this paper I will be talking about Steven Spielberg's struggle with dyslexia and the bullying that happened at school because of it.
“Dyslexia is a condition in which the brain fails to recognize symbols in the same way most other people do (The Power of Dyslexia.)” Dyslexia can affect one person's ability to read, write, spell, and can influence short-term memory (Dyslexia Help.) He wasn’t able to read for two years and was behind everyone else. After he learned to read he dreaded having to read in front of the class. His teachers failed to recognize there was even a problem. He was labeled as a poor/lazy student who did not do the work required. It takes him twice as long as other people to read a book. Spielberg says he didn’t feel like being a victim of bullying. “He struggled with math and eventually dropped out of college (Dyslexia Help).” There were no school programs or books for dyslexia so teachers didn’t know how to help him. In 1957, Magdalen Vernon Psychology Professor at the University of Reading, England recognized subgroups with either visual, auditory, or abstract reasoning problems. A very impactful study was done by Bertil Hallgren, who studied 276 cases of dyslexia and suggested, for the first time, that dyslexia was an autosomal dominant disorder. Unfortunately for Spielberg, most schools were late in picking up this information and did not provide a dyslexia program.
Dyslexia affects people in various different ways at different times in their life. It puts barriers in the way of progress. Those barriers can be overcome with the right kind of help from the right people. Dyslexia is not just a reading problem but also a problem with spelling. Many people with dyslexia have known to become excellent readers. Dyslexia is not only a problem with written words but also spoken words, especially coming up with a specific name or date when working under pressure of time
