Steve Harvey Refers to GSW Players as “Gorillas” Photo Credit: Outkick the Coverage TV host Steve Harvey was criticized by many after he referred to the players of NBA’s Golden State Warriors as gorillas during a conversation with a commentator from ESPN. The host’s remarks happened after Game 3 of the finals. ESPN commentator Stephen Smith spoke to the host about his opinion on the performance of his hometown NBA team, Cleveland Cavaliers. When asked if he believes that the Cavs could still come back from their loss against the Golden State Warriors (GSW) during the NBA Finals, Harvey said the GSW can’t be stopped. He expressed that you have to outscore them because they can’t be stopped. Harvey proceeded to say that they have too many gorillas. He says GSW …show more content…
True enough, the GSW was hailed as the champions of the NBA Finals. At first, the comments of the host did not receive any attention. However, when commentator Clay Travis, the host of Outkick the Coverage, compared Harvey’s similar remarks to tennis broadcaster Doug Adler’s. Adler was fired after he used the term guerilla to describe tennis superstar Venus Williams. Adler who worked for ESPN since 2008 was fired in 2017 only two days after he referred to one of Williams’ games as the guerilla effect. He later revealed in an interview that his firing made him unemployable. This prompted the former commentator to sue the network. Travis wrote in his column and asked why Harvey can call a team which comprised a majority of black athletes as gorillas without being scrutinized by the mainstream sports media. After Harvey made those comments no one reacted apart from Travis. In addition, Travis also related the situation where Roseann’s show was canceled by its network (ABC/Disney) after she came under fire for her racist comments. ABC is also the same network that airs Steve Harvey’s show Family

Growing up, Krzyzewski belonged to a group of neighborhood sidekicks tagged The Columbos, in which they could always be found taking part in playground basketball. ‘Mickey’, as he was known in this fraternity, had long been interested in sports but street ball with The Columbos is where he first learned to love the game. Many were understandable angered because of Cosby’s speech. Bill Cosby in his success has seemed to forgotten that not everyone has the opportunities he has had. He forgets that not everyone is able to get out of the bad situations that they were dealt with or have fallen into. Parenting is not to be blames for these issues, but society as a whole should be blamed for having failed to give these children the
...ive insult to Native American. Being former chair of the los Angeles City/county Native American Commission as well as president emeritus of the California community Foundation makes Shakely highly qualified in his argument because he is a Native American and he is highly respected in his organizations and in his community. Shakely clearly presents an affective argument from his point of view by providing personal experiences along with examples of sports teams’ Indian names and mascots and how they affect Native Americans. Sports team should remove the stereotypes of Native Americans. All Indian mascots and names should be removed from all sports teams. It’s the right thing to do.
The Sports Illustrated article leaves much out. Price makes light of critiques of racially biased language by labeling these critiques a matter of “political correctness” but fails to provide the reasons behind such critiques. Also, Price does not discuss the life of a single Native American who feels diminished by the Native American mascot in her/his community.
Several foreign basketball players have individually left their marks on NBA courts, in NBA record books, and in their fans’ hearts. Different ethnic groups, races, and sports fans in general have united, cheering on heroic efforts from players from overseas. These international players amped up the level of competition in basketball and found themselves at home in the NBA. Four international players have been honored with the most prestigious award a player can receive in professional basketball, NBA MVP. These same four players are undoubtedly future Hall of Famers and were listed in the top 30 international players of all time in a 2013 “Dime Magazine” article (Daruaku). These four players, Steve Nash, Tim Duncan,...
The issue of race in sport is somewhat baffling in that many people would rather not address at all even though sport has been intricately intertwined with racial issues throughout the Twentieth century. Those who would have us omit the topic altogether argue that analyses typically single out the black athlete, and then attempt to explain his/her inordinate success in ways different than we do with other groups. Critics contend that this is racist, since it perpetuates the idea that blacks are different, and often inferior. Edwards (1972) asserts that a typical theme resulting from such analysis is that blacks are physically superior, but intellectually inferior, to whites. Hoberman (1997) has further made the case that physical prowess, especially in such sports as basketball, has become a defining characteristic of the African-American community, and that beliefs about physical superiority are closely related to an anti-intellectualism that permeates black male culture. Essentially, Hoberman’s argument is that inordinate attention and idolization of prominent black athletes such as Michael Jordan has focused attention away from more realistic and important role models, and this, in turn has stunted intellectual, and social economic development in black communities.

Stephen A. Smith has a change of opinion regarding the Gred Hardy situation. In the past, he has supported the Dallas Cowboys on signing Greg Hardy, now he wants Hardy out of the NFL. Smith makes it clear that he never supported what Hardy did, but his rationale was since Hardy served his suspension somebody was going to sign him then why not the Dallas Cowboys. Machir believes that Hardy should of never been allowed back into the league in the first place, but only visual evidence should not change decisions made my organizations. He says the problem is we only live in a visual society. ESPN's hype of the Pacquiao Mayweather fight was huge for the network, despite Mayweather's long history of domestic abuse. Yes, Travis is an old friend of mine, but I believe that he should serve his life in prison for killing his girlfriend baby. I know people think it sick that young parents beat there children to death out of frustration, but you have to think of what is going on in the situation. Babies can be very overwhelming and make you go crazy. When a baby starts to cry and will not stop and you try your hardest to stop it from crying a person my just click and not know what is going on. They just wanted to get the baby to stop crying. I personally don’t have any children, but I know it is an awful sound to hear a baby cry. I get frustrated in a restaurant when I hear a baby cry.

Jackie Robinson was a prominent figure in American history as he broke the color line, and was the first black athlete to play in a white league. Americans believed this would stop racism in the future and integrate all sports, but racism has planted its roots in sports ever since 1947. The NBA is a professional basketball league and has been very popular in the United States since its creation. The sport is enjoyed by all races although most of the players are of African American race. During recent events, L.A. Clippers owner Donald Sterling was caught making racist remarks in an audio recording. Even though many organizations claim to be about equality and respect for their players and even their spectators—of color. It becomes evident that respect and equality is not the priority of the organization, which are headed by majority White males. For example, in 2014, the Atlanta Hawks, a sport organization with a roster majority of young Black men and its fans being nearly 70 percent Black came under criticism and investigation for racist comments made via email and phone conference. The racist comments that were made were by former Hawks owner, Bruce Levenson, and Hawks GM, Danny Ferry; Both White men. Both Levenson and Ferry were involved in two race controversies. Former Atlanta Hawks’ owner Bruce Levenson sent out an email to other Hawks CEOs stating that the audience and it entertainment (the team, cheerleaders, halftime talent, music selection, etc.) are all Black. Levenson continued to say in his email that because the audience and entertainment were majority Black, it was scaring aware White fans and investors from coming to the games (Joesph, 2014, USA Today. On the other hand, Hawks’ GM Danny Ferry was recorded during a conference call making defamatory remakes about free agent, at the time, Luol Deng who the Hawks were trying to acquire. During the call, Ferry professes that “ ‘[Deng] has a little African in him’ ”(ESPN.com). In the
