Women have faced prevailing stereotypes in roles mostly dominated by males. Adopting male roles continues to be problematic for woman. The gender stereotype has been a major boundary in preventing woman from reaching their fullest potential alongside their male police counterparts. Klenke (2004) states “oversimplified generalizations” has led to categorized judgements about people in general – black, white, rick, poor, gender and orientations. Woman “are not as widely recognized as leaders in their fields, and their accomplishments and successes are not as widely publicized as those leading women in politics and business” (2004, p. 219).

Some of the data is empirical evidence gathered during a one year test period comparing male police officers to their new female counterparts. There were no significant differentiation in delivery of services – this included patrol times, arrests, citations and conviction rate. Of particular insight is research gathered from survey data. Previous literature, while attempting to gain academic insight notwithstanding, had categorized woman as less competent in positions of authority. Surveys are based on experiences, expectations and opinions. For lack of a better term, it is based upon perception. Perception is not all an accurate indicator but, nonetheless, is used as a measuring tool. The authors note the original line of survey questions were later argued as unreliable (Thistlethwaite and Wooldredge, 2010). The initial round of questionnaires suggested women handled themselves better in stereotypical instances related to empathy and sensitivity. Female officers were betters suited to handle rape interviews according to one data survey while male officers were better suited to handle incidents requiring a cool head and aggressive response. We will likely see even more changes in the near future due to the many proposals to increase the number of women and ethnic minority officers in our police forces. An example of near change is the use of a hiring quota system. Under this system there is a requirement to recruit a specified number of minority and/or women officers. This may require the modification of standards and qualifications that could discriminate against these groups in order to achieve the required quota. Although this is a future option, we can see its methods are already being implemented in the past decades abolishment of height, weight, and age restrictions.
When the criminal justice system was established, one of the goals was to create neutrality and fairness between the sexes. However, during those times, women were not known for behaving in such manners. If a woman did in fact take part in any criminal activities, those crimes would have been blames on an individual that could of not fought for themselves. Even though people might believe that there is no such thing as ‘stereotyping’ in the criminal justice system, it is quite obvious that women are constantly being looked down upon because of their sex. In general, women tend to be treated like fragile objects that could break at any moment; the truth is that women can behave like men. Society stereotypes women; and, the criminal justice system is no different. When it comes to the stereotyping of women in the criminal justice system, society presents women who are indeed capable of committing such crimes as victims because by doing do they can achieve a lesser sentence or if necessary a longer sentence that will protect them from any harm.

When traditional roles for females are discussed, being a firefighter is not one of those roles. In elementary school one of the most common phrase used was, “You can’t do that you're a girl.” Society puts gender stereotypes and expectations on children at a very young age. I never really understood these stereotypes and expectations until later in my life. I couldn’t figure out why it was that boys were not allowed to like the color pink, and if the girls wanted to play “boy” sports it was seen as unusual. My family consists of my parents, my sister and I; so I never had sibling of the opposite gender in my life. I didn’t have someone to compare gender differences with. I was given toys no matter what gender they were geared towards. I remember receiving hot wheels cars and baby dolls the same year for Christmas and never thought anything thing of it. I think that these experiences has really shaped who I am today.
Gender stereotypes are very prevalent in today’s early childhood classrooms with societal expectations playing a significant role in generating the negative outcomes of both sexes (National Union of Teachers, 2013, p. 4). These societal expectations perpetuate inequality and become apparent through various interactions, messages and materials as well as through professional documentation such as the Australian Curriculum or the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) (Siraj-Blatchford, 2004, p, 22).
