Cover to Cover Janet Evanovich has been writing the well-known Stephanie Plum series for twenty years, which is longer than I have been alive. In my birth year, 1997, she wrote the third book in the series, Three to Get Deadly, and seventeen years later Evanovich wrote Top Secret Twenty-One. Several people would believe after twenty-one books with the same protagonists, Evanovich would begin to become redundant; however, the two novels are vastly different in terms of character relationships and antagonists. In the 1997 novel, Three to Get Deadly, the main character, Stephanie Plum, is a bounty hunter, and she is assigned with the task of bringing Trenton’s favorite citizen, Uncle Mo, back to jail. Uncle Mo is the antagonist in this book. He is arrested for carrying a concealed weapon, but when he does not show for his court appearance, Stephanie has to find him. Although Uncle Mo runs an ice cream and candy shop, he does a few odd jobs on the side, including killing drug dealers and burying them in his cellar. The work relationship between Stephanie and Ranger has almost completely vanished and has been replaced with romantic feelings and sexual tension. Stephanie rarely gives in to her desire to be with Ranger as she does not want to cheat on Morelli. Nevertheless, Ranger still helps her with difficult cases, and she aids him with his security firm when he needs a woman’s perspective. Morelli’s relationship with Stephanie has progressed to love, but both of them agree marriage is a terrifying concept and have avoided almost all conversations of commitment. Albeit no longer aiming to be a bounty hunter, Lula still assists Stephanie with captures every once in a while, and she has become her best friend.
