Joel Stein is an American journalist who writes as a columnist for TIME. A weekly writer, he often organizes his thoughts into ideas, entertainment, tech, and politics, which is just a few. I enjoyed reading Stein’s work and think his columns are comical, informational, and personable. Stein had a common thread throughout his work that stood out and it was his comedic twist on any story he wrote about. He often ended his paragraphs with a joke or something to lighten up the mood of the column. Stein bantered with himself in funny commentary. This can make any sort of topic Stein writes about become less offensive to readers who might disagree with his views. I believe it is important to express one’s own standpoint about society, and Stein does that perfectly. He keeps topics lighthearted …show more content…
The subjects written in the columns are all topical, and shows his engagement and awareness. All of Stein’s columns have a purpose despite the fact most of them are based off of his own thoughts. Stein frequently refers to information and data from professionals, but also uses opinions from ordinary people, such as his parents. This makes his columns seem more factual and resourceful to read. Stein’s columns were purposeful for advertisements of movies, to humor the reader, but also to educate. The columns were not extremely lengthy. The style of writing used in Stein’s columns are straight to the point which goes right along with his short and blunt sentences. This can covey Stein as being a person with great haste and urgency in his daily life. However, Stein often used metaphors and comparisons for readers to better understand the topic. The importance of this is readers are more educated in the matter, and therefore not ignorant and do not assume. Many problems today with people reading news become ignorant simply because they did not understand what they
Characterized by constitutionally-limited government, an emphasis on (and a wide-spread popular ideological enshrinement of) individual civil rights and liberties, and economic policy exhibiting strong laissez-faire overtones, the American political system certainly warrants the designation liberal democracy. This designation distinguishes the United States from similar advanced industrial democracies whose political systems lend themselves to preserving the public welfare rather than individual rights. With their government bound to precepts established in a constitution drafted and revised by a group of tyranny-fearing individuals, the American populace enjoys one of the most liberal, unrestrictive governments

All of these are components of J. D. Salinger’s writing style. While the tone of The Catcher in the Rye may suggest a lighthearted, entertainment centered novel, the work is, in actuality, a deep study of human emotion and sympathy, as well as a dark portrait of the wickedness in the world.
In this passage, the audience truly sees the meaning behind Herbert Kohl's message. His purpose for writing comes back to the fact that people interpret situations differently in every way. Kohl not only wanted to highlight the purpose behind wanting to learn something new but he also wanted readers to be aware that most time it does not come down to the inability of someone who doesn't want to learn but the real reason behind why they don't want to. People have different opinions on topics such as these but Kohl wanted to show that being able to want to stand up for your culture and the meanings behind it are rather important. Behind Kohl's purpose for writing, we see an insight into his past life relating to Wilfredo's. Kohl's reason for
I. John Steinbeck used his personal experiences as a laborer to write many of his novels like Of Mice and Men and The Grapes of Wrath.
Racism in 1912 was a very big issue and still is in our society today. W.E.B DuBois’ essay “A Mild Suggestion” portrays the idea and reality of the social inequality that took place in 1912. DuBois uses satire to offer a solution to the apparent African-American problem in the United States. Dubois writes “the colored man says ‘the next morning there would be ten million funerals, and therefore no Negro problem”’ (DuBois 93) He then goes on to state that on a chosen night, the people implement a planned mass killing of all the African-American folk, therefore solving all of their problems. The essay is able to show how effective racist language and ideas can be, as well as providing a good example of a writing style that keeps the reader engaged throughout the piece.
John Steinbeck was inspired by the line "The best schemes o' mice an' men [often go awry]" by Robert Burns in one of his poems. This line refers to ambitions that went off track during the process. There are multiple examples in the novel that refers to the line in the poem, that inspired John Steinbeck. Those examples are Curley's boxing career coming to an end, Curley's wife not becoming a actress, and Lennie's plans of tending the rabbits, but messed everything up.
"If an author does not have at least one great popular success, he or she may well be ignored by the media, but if he or she is constantly popular, then the critics become suspicious of the writer's serious intentions" (Benson Introduction). What do critics from the literary world have to say about Steinbeck's writings? Critics have much to say, both positive and negative. What link exists between Steinbeck and his writings? Perhaps the most noteworthy biographical link between Steinbeck and his writings is that he was born and came to maturity in the Salinas Valley. In this area of California, bounded on the north and south by the Pajaro and Jolon valleys on the west and east by the Pacific Ocean and the Gabilan Mountains, Steinbeck found the materials for his fiction (Tedlock 3). John Steinbeck's agricultural upbringing in the California area vibrantly shines through in the settings and story lines of the majority of his works.
In 1935, his novel Tortilla Flat established him as a popular and critical success but unfortunately his parents died before he achieved his first success.

... resemble the paintings of the Cubist movement. The work of Cubist painters such as Marchel Duchamp is stylistically paralleled to Stein's writing. The Cubist movement stressed the power of the individual mind to create an artistic image separate from the expectations society had for art. The work of Gertrude Stein, in the same way, aims to channel the reader into a self-directed interpretation of words in order to form a personalized image found in Stein's art just as the Cubist artists used techniques to remove the mind of the viewer from social constraints.
My Tracking Topic is the #MeToo Movement, a feminist movement that has been gaining a great popularity as a result of the women celebrities calling out rich, powerful men in the entertainment industry. I believe that the author that would most likely appreciate this movement would be Vaclav Havel, the Czech dissident who wrote about themes such as “Living in the Truth versus Living within a Lie” and the “Power of the Powerless”. The #MeToo Movement perfectly encapsulates what it means to “Live in the Truth” instead of “Living within a Lie”, as it is considerably easier to live within a lie. This is because these women have broken out of society’s power and money-driven hierarchy in order to expose famous, rich men in a position of authority
John Steinbeck’s ‘Of Mice and Men’ is a social commentary on the reality of life in the 1930s. During the Great Depression many people were left unemployed and homeless. Due to this, the concept of the American Dream became even more idealized. Steinbeck uses characters and events that take place in the novella to display his views not only towards the American Dream but also the social ills of the era.

Modern day society is engrossed in a battle for protection of individual rights and freedoms from infringement by any person, be it the government or fellow citizens. Liberalism offers a solution to this by advocating for the protection of personal freedom. As a concept and ideology in political science, liberalism is a doctrine that defines the motivation and efforts made towards the protection of the aforementioned individual freedom. In the current society, the greatest feature of liberalism is the protection of individual liberty from intrusion or violation by a government. The activities of the government have, therefore, become the core point of focus. In liberalism, advocacy for personal freedom may translate to three ideal situations, based on the role that a government plays in a person’s life. These are no role, a limited role or a relatively large role. The three make up liberalism’s rule of thumb. (Van de Haar 1). Political theorists have
