In the 1850’s the innovative generation was building exciting new urban cities, America became known as the nation of innovators. America’s latest invention was the creation of the vertical city. America was creating skyscrapers, elevators and came to have the greatest icon to symbolize the new vertical America. In 1855 the City of New York got the greatest gift ever, The Statue of Liberty. Built by the people of Paris, it had been given to America as the French wished to celebrate the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. It had been dropped off on New York Harbor in 214 crates, and broken into 350 pieces. The Statute had one problem; the money it would cost for New York to put the pieces together. Joseph Pulitzer was a self-made man who earned his living through his chain of newspapers, and owns the biggest paper in the United States, the New York World.
He came up with the idea to fund raise the money to keep the Statue in New York by accepting donations from the people who read his numerous newspapers. Donations from all over the country came to keep the statue at New York Harbor. They donations from the readers of Pulitzers, which totaled at 121,000, kept the statue in New York. The statue took 6 months to be put together and needed over 200 men to complete it. The Statue of liberty took 25 years to turn its iconic green and was lighthouse up until 1902, it became a symbol of friendship between the colonies that were involved in the American Revolution, but it soon became a welcome to the millions of immigrants entering from the New York
Harbor. With the creation of new mega cities in the United States, it seemed the only way to build was to go up. The cost of creating vertical buildings was huge due to the price of steel. An iron millionaire Andrew Carnegie, was looking into new ways to create steel. But to build the new skyscrapers, steel is needed. A bullet maker in England shows Carnegie a simple way to produce steel; using the Bessemer process, which is where you use iron and blast hot air through it. When he returns to Pittsburgh he builds a giant steel plant in the world and then the stock market crash happens, which creates a giant dip in the American economy. After borrowing more money, he can finally start testing in 1875. When he is able to mass produce the steel, skyscraper’s, cars, and other steel creations, are being produced at huge numbers. This era of time became known as the gilded age. New York becomes a city full of skyscrapers, and by the 1900’s there were already 65 in existence. European immigrants and Indians, become the main workers on these sites, the high risk job paid 4 dollars. During the 19th century population in urban cities increased by 87 percent. The crime and poverty rates in urban cities in America continued to grow, and life on the streets was hard for poor immigrants. The numerous crimes, and thievery acts were told across the country on tabloids. One detective, Chief Thomas Byrnes was a hard man who set his own rules on persecution called “the third degree.” The first degree was persuasion, then intimidation and then finally he would inflict pain. Slums were also a major problem in the new cities. Families were being stuffed into one room apartments and there was no form of sanitation. Horses were also causing a major problem due to the millions of pounds of manure they were dumping every day. Colonel Waring, the head of the health department steps in a helps create sewers and send trash materials to be recycled instead of being dumped in rivers. One problem that America still faced is the need for electricity. Thomas Edison in 1879 creates the light bulb. As it moves into cities across America, consumer products are being pushed out of factories and the cities are booming with more people and the latest technology.
The Ancient Egyptian sculpture, “Statue of Nykara and His Family”, was sculpted during the late fifth dynasty. The sculpture is a depiction of Nykara, his wife, Nubkau, and son, Ankhma-Re. The statue is in poor condition with pieces of limestone missing and chips on the three subject’s faces and bodies. The painted limestone shows the conventional colors for the male and female subjects. There is a clear discoloration among Nykara and his son’s bodies. The brownish red color they once were has eroded to a light yellowish color, which resembles the purposeful color of Nykara’s wife. The hieroglyphs on Nykara’s seat insinuate that the sculpture is meant to be viewed from the front view. This is also evident by the way the three subjects are facing forward in frontal view. There are hieroglyphs on both the chair and base of the statue near Nykara’s wife and son’s feet.
The Liberty Bell is a symbol of American independence and is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The government paid around 100 pounds for the bell (A&E Television Networks). It was once rung in the tower of the Pennsylvania State House, which is now called the Independence Hall. This bell was used to call the lawmakers to meeting and the people of the town to hear the reading of the news. Isaac Norris is the person that ordered for a bell in 1751, and on the first ring the bell cracked. Once it was cracked, John Pass and John Stow melted it down and casted a new one right in Philadelphia. (U.S. Department of the Interior) Both of their last names are on the bell after doing the new cast on the bell. (Liberty Bell Facts)

The Statue of Liberty is one of the most well know symbols of the United States, across the world. For this reason I chose to analyze the dramatic effect it creates, and what methods it implores to invent this "universal" meaning. It is one of the strongest visual representations of the ideals which our country is founded upon. I intend to defend the argument that the Statue of Liberty posses the power of persuading human thought using the terms encompassed in Kenneth Burke's Pentad, shaping the definition of "America" for people through out the world.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art came about as an idea from Jon Jay in Paris, France in 1866 with the idea of “national institution gallery of art” within the United States. Once this idea was proposed, it was immediately moved forward with his return to the United States. With the help of the Union League Club in NY they began to acquire civic leaders, businessmen, artists, and collectors who aided in the creation of the museum. For over 140 years, the visitors who go here have received everything the mission of the institution states.
Following the steps of the Dutch who first came to Lower Manhattan, we embarked on the Staten Island Ferry on Sunday, Nov. 10, and we could see one of the world’s most famous figures: The Statue of Liberty, a gift from the French to the U.S. that was put in such a strategic and historic place. The view of the green icon from the boat that was transporting passengers from Staten Island to Lower Manhattan, with the skyline of New Jersey in the background, and New York to our right, was a delightful experience. Not one person on the ferry was like the other, one could see people from all over the world, joined together and representing New York’s diversity, trying to relive the same experience that the Dutch had centuries ago. Some people take this ride every day for work; others were simply tourists or inhabitants of the New York metropolitan area.
A comment misconception is that Confederate statues and memorials were erected right after the end of the Civil War to honor the fallen soldiers, and while some such statues do exist, the South was too ravaged by the effects of the war to put money forth for so many statues. The truth is that a vast majority of these statues and memorials were actually built during two distinctive time periods. The first was in the early 1900’s, and the second was during the 50’s and 60’s. So what is the connection between the two, and why build statues commemorating Generals that not only lost a war, but lost a war that ended some 60- 100 years before they were built? The dark truth behind these periods was the early 1900’s was during the rise of Jim Crow,
What was the purpose of the daughters of liberty and what was their goal in the revolutionary war?

When French President Francois Mitterand “personally selected Mr. Pei in 1983 to design the Grand Louvre to give air, space, and light to one of the world’s most congested museums,” (Markham, 1989) there were many critics. The press “lambasted the idea of shattering the harmony of the Louvre’s courtyard with a glass iceberg” (Markham, 1989). But Pei proceeded as planned, taking a major risk in creating a glass pyramid structure at the entrance. He did not focus on what the critics would say about his plans, but hoped that the world would see, upon completion, that his vision of a contemporary, functional entrance would not clash with the Baroque style of the Louvre itself.
The painting American Progress (1872), shows the beauty of the country’s expansion, along with the peaceful movement of the country spreading west. The contrast between the east, as a light place and the west as dark, shows the hope that is waiting for them. The angelic figure of Lady Liberty, gliding above them showing them the way, with this she brings communication advancement and education. She is an unstoppable force. Just like America’s destiny to expand.
The ensemble’s intonation during the performance of the march was absolutely terrible. The flat notes sounded low throughout the piece. Especially the Ebs at measure 71 until measure 87 where they started sounding more in tune. The Dbs at measure 91 sounded
In contrast, did anyone ever wonder what the Statue of Liberty is made of? Believe it or not The Statue of Liberty’s outside shell was made from copper. Inside the Statue, the frame is made from steel and iron which is similar to the Eiffel Tower. These materials keep the Statue’s shape. In addition, 300 different types of hammers were used to build the Statue (“Klein”). Although...
This is a great symbol of art because The Statue of Liberty is magnificent in every way, and serves its purpose to a superb level. Like I mentioned previously, “location, location, location .. “ the statue’s location was perfect back in the days of Ellis Island and is perfect now as a tourist site. Shortly after the immigrants on the boats first spotted the land of their new homes, they came into the Hudson river to see this grand statue, and to most people it wasn’t just some lady who was standing in the middle of a river, it was the lady who was going to free them or help them from their inadequate lives.
