Statistical Investigation
Introduction
I have chosen to do this statistical coursework that uses data from
'Mayfield High School.' Although this is a fictitious school, the data
is based on a real school. As the data has been collected for me, it
is called secondary data.
I believe that this coursework will allow me to illustrate my ability
to handle data, use specific techniques and apply higher level
statistical maths by being able to use a variety of methods in order
to analyse and compare sets of data. During this project I will be
examining the relationships between the attributes of the pupils of
Mayfield High School. My aim is took produce a line of enquiry which
has two or more statistics regarding the pupils which are related to
each other.

Heart rate is the different intervals of a heart beat and is influenced in the sino-atrial node of the heart by parasympathetic and sympathetic input (Meule, et al., 2012). Heart rate is influenced by a person’s physical conditions, and health (Thayer et al., 2010). Body weight, alcohol, and smoking all influence our heart rate (Thayer et al., 2010; Karason et al., 1999). Our whole lifestyle influences our heart rate. From when we wake up to when we go to sleep, each activity our day has influences whether our heart rate increases or decreases. A data collection worksheet was given to me in a class and I had to fill out a survey and a list of activities. Each student had their information entered into a spreadsheet where I had to then choose two activities. One activity has a higher heart rate than the other and that is what we need to find using the scientific method. I hypothesize that the heart rate before resting is significantly lower than the heart rate when one eats dinner. The steps used in the scientific method is materials and methods, and the results that conclude whether the hypothesis was correct or wrong.

Human beings are incredibly social creatures. They are brought into a social setting as soon as they are born. People influence the individuals around them. But the individuals around the person can affect them too. This paper will look at the definition of social psychology, how social psychology can be applied to law enforcement, and have an example of social research benefiting law enforcement. The quantitative research article that I chose to review was a study completed by Dougherty and Thompson (2009), found in Research in Nursing & Health. Very few researchers have focused their study on the impact of cardiac arrest and ICD implantation on a patient’s intimate partner. What little is known about caregiving responsibilities and caregiver burden after a cardiac illness or event has previously been focused on the spousal experiences following an acute myocardial infarction or coronary artery bypass graft surgery (Dougherty & Thompson, 2009). The researchers in this article chose to study the physical and mental health effects of the intimate partners of persons after sudden cardiac arrest and receipt of an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). Intimate partners were defined as being the spouse, lover, or significant other living in the same household as the patient during the study enrollment. Complete data collection was obtained from 100 intimate partners that participated in the study. Subjects were recruited from 10 Pacific Northwest hospitals after patient’s received an ICD after cardiac arrest. Data were collected by the researchers between 1999 and 2002.
This chapter taught me the importance of understanding statistical data and how to evaluate it with common sense. Almost everyday we are subjected to statistical data in newspapers and on TV. My usual reaction was to accept those statistics as being valid. Which I think is a fair assessment for most people. However, reading this chapter opens my eyes to the fact that statistical data can be very misleading. It shows how data can be skewed to support a certain group’s agenda. Although most statistical data presented may not seem to affect us personally in our daily lives, it can however have an impact. For example, statistics can influence the way people vote on certain issues.
For this research requirement I chose three different experiments to examine thoroughly. The first of these experiments came from the Journal of Experimental Child Psychology. The study done in this journal was an examination of orthographic learning and self-teaching in a bilingual and biliterate context. The aim of the study was to figure out the advantages and/or disadvantages of a student learning a native language when they are either monolingual, bilingual, or biliterate, and the study was focused on learning English because this is the most commonly learned non-native language in the world.
The Collier Encyclopedia’s definition for probability is the concern for events that are not certain and the reasonableness of one expectation over another. These expectations are usually based on some facts about past events or what is known as statistics. Collier describes statistics to be the science of the classification and manipulation of data in order to draw inferences. Inferences here can be read to mean expectations, leading to the conclusion that the two go hand in hand in accomplishing what mankind has tried to accomplish since the beginning of time – predicting the future. It is the notion of science that this is the most accurate way to predict events yet to occur and this has lead to it being the most widely accepted “fortune telling'; tool in the world today.
Analysis of variance (ANOVA) tests the hypothesis that the means of two or more populations are equal. ANOVAs assess the importance of one or more factors by comparing the response variable means at the different factor levels. The null hypothesis states that all population means (factor level means) are equal while the alternative hypothesis states that at least one is different.

Experimental psychology is a branch of psychology that scientifically investigates psychological processes in humans that result in behavior. There are a variety of different ways to approach a psychological hypothesis. Each approach has its strengths and weaknesses, and most focus on only one aspect of psychology. All approaches have the same goal; they aspire to increase knowledge about human behavior. A few relevant approaches are physiological, cognitive, and social. I believe these approaches are the key to understanding psychological processes and behaviors, although some approaches are weaker than others.
Whether or not people notice the importance of statistics, people is using them in their everyday life. Statistics have been more and more important for different cohorts of people from a farmer to an academician and a politician. For example, Cambodian famers produce an average of three tons or rice per hectare, about eighty per cent of Cambodian population is a farmer, at least two million people support party A, and so on. According to the University of Melbourne, statistics are about to make conclusive estimates about the present or to predict the future (The University of Melbourne, 2009). Because of their significance, statistics are used for different purposes. Statistics are not always trustable, yet they depend on their reliable factors such as sample, data collection methods and sources of data. This essay will discuss how people can use statistics to present facts or to delude others. Then, it will discuss some of the criteria for a reliable statistic interpretation.
