At times it's good to conform with the rest of the group because it can give us benefits in life. In Jerry Spinelli's Stargirl he asks the reader to consider whether it is good or bad to conform. Leo is the main character in the story. Stargirl is a really important outsider who changes Leo’s perspective of how he lives. Leo forces Stargirl to conform to the group, but it doesn't turn out very well. She ends up being popular but deep inside she is feeling really sad. Leo learns a lot from Stargirl, but the main thing that he learns is that you can’t force people or their personality to change just to fit in. Non-conformity could be the key to being happy in life. Stargirl has her “happy wagon.”. For example, Stargirl’s “happy wagon”(80) is almost full because she’s being unique and not conforming. At the beginning, the students at M.A.H.S didn’t like that. Soon Stargirl had her “golden age”(80) where everybody liked her which also made her a little different: “She picked up a pebble from the shelf and with a grin dropped it into the wagon ‘Well call me Ms. Unpredictable’” (81). She is a non-conformer, and she doesn't like being the same as other people. When she’s Stargirl, not Susan, she is like this little kid full of wonder, glee, and excitement which nobody can stop. In the beginning of the book she is just full of love and wonder, however towards …show more content…
the end after Leo changes Stargirl to Susan she's not happy: “ She was forever tugging my arm and saying ‘look’ I would look around and would see nothing and say ‘Where?’ she would point ‘there’” (102). She is always curious and always open to love. She's always reaching and changing people's perspectives on how they live life and how they see life also. In conclusion, conformity is a bad thing to do. Like Stargirl, we should all be unique or we will also be like “the dormant mud frogs.”(40). The problem is that Leo doesn't feel good after what happened in high school which was like 10 years ago. He realizes his actions were really bad when he looked back at his memories he feels terrible about how he forced her to change. There can be consequences, however, to not conforming.
If he didn’t do that, and if he kept conforming with the group he wouldn’t be a nobody. He would've still had all his friends, but he would’ve lost Stargirl:“‘I’m invisible’ i said to Kevin ‘Nobody hears me nobody sees me. I’m friggin invisible man’” (132). He just wanted to be a little different, but that little difference cost him a big price. In her bedroom, while Leo is talking to Stargirl he says, “‘You can't just wake up in the morning and say you don't care what the rest of the world thinks.’ Her eyes were wide, her voice peepy like little
girls. "You can't?" "Not unless you want to be a hermit" Leo doesn’t realize he is not conforming to the group, instead, he decides to kiss Stargirl and that makes him like Stargirl, a nobody. We shouldn’t always be like everybody else. We should be ourselves, and we should be unique. He looks back fondly at Stargirl's “golden age” when everyone likes her and wants to be her friend. When Stargirl leaves, Leo goes to Archie and speaks to him on his back porch. Leo asks “Is she real?”(177). Archie says, “‘Oh yes, as real as we get….That's the good news.’ He pointed the pipe stem at me. ‘And well named. Stargirl.’ Though I think she had simpler things in her mind ‘Star People are rare.You'll be lucky to see another one.’”(177). Archie says Star People are rare and they are really hard to find. When Leo changes Stargirl to Susan Caraway he made her feel less special. She changes back to Stargirl, other people still hate her but at least she feels happy. Stargirl was what every Mica Area High school student once was… unique. Just like Stargirl “star” people just come and go, and you don't see them for a long time.”That was 15 years ago” (176). He hasn't seen her since then. She just vanished, and nobody knows if it was because everyone hated her or Leo didn't like her. Leo learns to live his life a different way.Stargirl has impacted him in so many different ways: “She taught me to revel. She taught me to wonder. She taught me to laugh” (107). This is Spinelli’s message for us all. He doesn’t only want Leo to live his life a different way, but he also wants us to think and live our lives a little bit differently as well.
Conformity can be very crucial, infact a lot of people eventually start hurting themselves or doing drugs just because they don't feel themselves anymore.Why can't society change? why can't that one kid that always follows everyone in the back can turn into the kid that just hangs with the people they really wanna hang with?We need to embrace ourselves so we can stop all this conformity from consuming us.Tupac was a nonconformist, he always did what made him happy and always told the truth.
Another point I agree with is that it's a lot easier to just fit in and not lead the train and being yourself. I personally know from experience. Growing up I always tried to conform just to fit in with the people that surrounded me. It's not just me that i've seen conform to fit in, i've seen many of my friends conform to fit in with the crowd. All around me, everyday people are conforming and changing to fit in with the society.
The most popular age to do so are teenagers as one can depict. If all people conformed to one another, individuality would never be heard of. An opposite way to think of this is that without conformity, the common society would not be able to work together. People tend to believe this due to the fact that without agreement, there is chaos. No one would have courage to stand up for what they believe in, what they like, and most importantly, who they are. One will usually believe that after conforming to fit others for a while, one may begin to lose themselves. All in all, conforming may seem to be the only option to people in order not drag attention to themselves in certain situations. In these situation types, you must find courage within yourself to have the ability to not overlook what you believe
Although animated cartoons have long been associated with children’s entertainment, the content of many cartoons suggest they are for adults as well. From character portrayal to perceived gender roles, cartoons such as The Flintstones, The Jetsons, and Scooby Doo both reflect societal values from their time periods as well as perpetuate the developed stereotypes. Cartoons produced more recently such as The Simpsons start to challenge these stereotypes instead of following blindly. Comparing the earliest popular cartoons to more recent productions, shows progress towards a less stereotypical character portrayal in regards to gender.
Stargirl is narrated by Leo Borlock, a boy in high school, who is dealing with school problems at M.A.H.S. (Mica Area High School). One day in M.A.H.S., a new student appears who goes by Stargirl. Stargirl arrives at the school and she is what they call different. She acts differently, dresses differently, thinks differently, but she is actually extremely kind. At first people seem to like her, but that all changed once she started cheering for both teams especially when her team began to win every game. That’s when everyone at her school started to hate and shun her. In the middle of it all, she began to be friends with Leo Borlock and they realize that they have feeling for each other. Leo enjoys their relationship until he realizes that
Conformity means a change in one’s behavior due to the real or imagined influence of other people. As a teenager, the pressure to conform to the societal “norm” plays a major role in shaping one’s character. Whether this means doing what social groups want or expect you to do or changing who you are to fit in. During class, we watched films such as Mean Girls, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and The Breakfast Club which demonstrate how the pressure to conform into society can change who you are. In the movies we have seen, conformity was most common during high school.
It is very common to see conformity among young people, especially when large groups of young people are constantly around each other. School is one example where conformity is rampant. For some reason people tend to gravitate towards what others are doing. In Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel, Never Let Me Go, the characters are no different from any other young person in that they tend to conform. Ishiguro shows this conformity to prove that conformity stems from the want to fit in and pure ignorance. At Hailsham, the students conform just to fit in with the rest of the students, but they also conform because they do not know any better.
If conformity means to “conform to a social role… brought about by a desire to ‘fit in’ or be liked,” then the characters of Never Let Me Go are a wonderful example (McLeod). In Hailsham, the school where the Ruth, Tommy, and Kathy grow up, the Guardians expect all of the students to be extremely creative;
Conformity can often seem like the best path to take in a situation. Going along with everyone else will cause less conflict for the group as a whole. Unfortunately conforming simply to protect other people's feelings can lead to powerful internal conflicts if a person does not fully agree with the situation. Ruth from A Raisin in the Sun, Langston from "Salvation," and Mama from "Everyday Use," all felt internal conflicts resulting from conformity.
Conformity can be useful when in unfamiliar surroundings or activities. Several examples make their appearance everyday like dancing. Dancing is a fun activity, but when it’s unclear what kind of dancing to do. What happens then? It’s in everyone’s best interest to mimic the people who know what they’re doing to avoid embarrassment. In some way or another, everyone has done it throughout their life but it is really handy in the right
Throughout most of her life, Kathy demonstrates some kind of conformity. It is only until she becomes a carer and has time for herself is when she grows to be more independent and challenges her fate. Throughout the entire novel, Kathy reflects on her life and recalls numerous situations where she wonders why she did not act differently. This shows how much Kathy has changed into a person who acts for herself, not worrying about the expectations of others.
Conformity is defined as behavior in accordance with socially accepted conventions or standards. This is not a good or bad thing, this just is. It exists as a compliment to earlier humans congregating into larger groups, using agriculture and domestication to create sustenance. Also, conformity is essential for life. We need people to share the same ideas, ideologies and a way of thinking in order to work efficiently and effectively. There many examples that exist like, at work or in your house and even within yourself. Sigmund Freud has explained the phenomena of group psychology in a piece titled, Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego. Using Freud’s theory of conformity I will explain the self, what we call “me”,and its different constituents using The Principles of Psychology by
Rita Brown once said that “The reward for conformity is that everyone likes you but yourself.” Conformity brings about a choice to repress your own views to “fit in” with other people. This choice can bring danger to other people and put lives in jeopardy. Those who make the decision to not conform to society make the most out of their situation. In reading, The Crucible, The Monsters are Due on Maple Street and the article on the Red Scare, I have realized the right decision in life. I believe not conforming and standing up for what you believe in is right the right choice.
The inability to conform in society can lead to unhappiness and the feeling of inequality
In my life I have chosen to conform in several areas. I conform on my hockey team so that we can play together as a team. I choose to listen to my coach and respect the other members of my team. However, I do not conform by choosing not to swear or talk negatively. I also conform to my friends in a way because we enjoy similar activities including mountain biking and playing video games. We also dress similarly, I do not necessarily express my individuality in my dress or hairstyle. However, I think that I do not conform with my friends because I do not do what they want me to do under pressure. I also non-conform with my schooling because I have chosen to participate in distance education instead off going to a public or private school. Regarding
