Riva was truly a “smart owl” she found different ways to keep her and her brothers alive, and out of harm’s way. For instance, she managed to get herself off the Nazi deportation record that was made every week. Riva did this by making friends with the work manager who was forced to make the deportation list. Riva realized that if she kept on worrying about what is going to happen in the future it would be depressing; instead she thought about when she was going to be reunited with her family. *******FINISH***********
“To climb…you have to be completely selfish”(pg.182). Though it may not always be true, to some degree it is. But it’s not just when you’re climbing, every single action that you take could be the difference between trust and suspicion, between death and life, between rising glory and simmering rage. People tend to be self-centered all the time, and sometimes, it really is the appropriate time to be selfish. On the other hand, it’s not always the best choice to be so selfish.
Life has been tough for the teenagers on the street, they all find out about the struggles of living in these cold hard streets. Barbara Haworth-Attard shows us life on the streets of the four main characters in her book theories of relativity. Living on the streets is tough, and these four kids found out the hard way. Most of them will be stuck on the streets forever such as amber, twitch, and Jenna, but Dylan might be able to make it out
The book Blind, written by Rachel DeWoskin, is about a highschool sophomore named Emma, who went blind after being struck in the face with a firework. When she first lost her sight, Emma was placed in a hospital for over 2 months, and once she was released, she could finally go home again. DeWoskin uses the characterization of Emma throughout the beginning of the text to help the reader understand the character’s struggle more. Especially in the first few chapters, it was difficult for Emma to adapt to a world without sight. For instance, DeWoskin writes, “And sat down, numb, on our gold couch. And tried to open my eyes, rocked, counted my legs and arms and fingers. I didn’t cry. Or talk” (DeWoskin 44). As a result of losing a very important scent, she’s started to act differently from a person with sight.
The Power of an Author Authors have the ability justify the worst actions. Authors have a way of romanticizing certain situations in order to convey a specific message. A good author has power to influence the reader into believing whatever it is the author wants. When it comes to the story of Hannah Dustan, authors such as John Greenleaf Whittier have romanticized her captivity story along with the actions she took throughout her journey. Introducing a character that will be seen in the story is one of the most vital parts when creating a piece of literature.
Imagine living alone at 16, thousands of miles from your only family, no friends, and trying to gain land of your own. Hattie Brooks did just that, she was always known as Hattie Here-and-There because her parents died when she was young and she was shipped from relative to relative. She was bound to change that. She wanted something of her own, she wanted a home. So, in 1918 after receiving a letter leaving a homestead claim to her from a long lost uncle Chester she packed up all she owned and moved to Montana. She quickly found out how difficult and demanding farm life was. In order to own the land officially she had to prove up which included having to set 480 rods of fence, cultivate one eighth of land, and pay thirty-seven seventy-five
When Anna Close is first introduced in the novel, As We Are Now she is referred to as Mrs. Close. From what I gather, this was to represent a sort of formality between her and Caro because they were not yet acquainted. Not only this, but it also seems that it was Harriet and Rose's way of manipulating Caro to fear the worst out of Harriet's replacement. Caro knew better than to expect someone who would actually care for her, because of this she was surprised beyond belief when she met Anna.
"The Star" is written by H.G. Wells and is set in 1897 and tells a
Ed Boone and Judy Boone are Christopher’s parents. In the book, his father Ed is recognized as being loving, caring, patient and protective of Christopher. Though, Ed goes beyond when expressing his emotions, constantly loses temper at Christopher and has a problem of presenting his problems verbally. Above all, he gets overly frustrated of not always being able to understand his son’s behavior and becomes livid when Christopher misbehave or misunderstands him. For instance, Ed would say, “Christopher, if you do not behave I swear I shall knock the living daylights out of you” (47). Ed is perceived as a good man but has an explosive and abusive nature which becomes a bigger issue further in the story. On the other hand, Judy is later acknowledged as being a loving yet impatient mother.
I received a free copy of The Girl from Everywhere by … from Hot Key Books in exchange for an honest review, this has in no way influenced my thoughts and feelings about the book.
In When the Legends Die by Hal Borland, the main character Thomas Black Bull goes through a series of different identities. His name changes to fit each of those identities. Throughout the book, he reminisces on the boys of his past while changing to become someone new. The book explores how Little Black Bull became Bear’s Brother, Thomas Black Bull, and Tom Black.
Non-conformity could be the key to being happy in life. Stargirl has her “happy wagon.”. For example, Stargirl’s “happy wagon”(80) is almost full because she’s being unique and not conforming. At the beginning, the students at M.A.H.S didn’t like that. Soon Stargirl had her “golden age”(80) where everybody liked her which also made her a little different: “She picked up a pebble from the shelf and with a grin dropped it into the wagon ‘Well call me Ms. Unpredictable’” (81). She is a non-conformer, and she doesn't like being the same as other people. When she’s Stargirl, not Susan, she is like this little kid full of wonder, glee, and excitement which nobody can stop. In the beginning of the book she is just full of love and wonder, however towards
It only takes one person to stop bullying. In the novel Egghead by Caroline Pignat, that one person is Devan. He is the key to stopping bullying in his high school for many reasons. My essay will include a summary of all the major points that help Devan to be that one person. Devan is a hero because he is caring, he does not judge a person by their cover, and he turns from a bully to an upstander.
Fate. What is fate? Is fate controlled by our own actions or is it controlled by a much bigger being? Is fate controlled by us or are we controlled by fate? Harry S Truman, “actions are the seed of fate deeds grow into destiny.” The dictionary defines fate as the development of events beyond a person's control. This stated we do not control fate, but rather fate controls us. Sometimes actions can change fate, fate is a dependent factor that can affect other things and people. In the poems by Inge Auerbacher in the book I Am A Star and The Book Thief by Markus Zusak the audience sees a common theme about fate’s affect on humans and how it’s unpredictable.
Backroads begins with Harley being questioned by the police for a crime that the reader knows not of. He delves into the story that has brought him up to this point, beginning from a year after his mother shot his father. The events in the course of this are breath taking.
