Free state and community college has been debated by many politicians for years. It would allow families to create a new pathway for education and their future. Free college helps the economy in many ways by creating new and more efficient jobs for the new and upcoming generations. Many jobs now require a college education and students need educational support to succeed. Many states are beginning to support the proposal of free or low-cost state and community college, under certain criteria. Currently “most graduates end up tens of thousands of dollars in debt and cannot afford to put their families in that position which limites career options” (Clawson and Page). Free college education would benefit about nine million students and save a full time community college student approximately $3,800 in tuition per year. In 2016, the organization “Star Scholarship” was created to help motivated and academically talented students earn scholarships. Star Scholarship is an immense opportunity to college students and has also concluded that twenty two percent of the people who attended college through their program graduated in two years, while eighty five percent of the people who graduated through Star Scholarship graduated in three years. During President Obama’s presidential terms, he proposed a plan to offer free state and community college, but sadly this proposition was turned down. Since President Obama’s proposition was turned down, potential presidents have offered the same, such as Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton who proposed the same in their election campaigns. Some states have already begun to offer free college to students that fall under the certain criteria. Oregon was the first state to offer free community college, the students involved in this scholarship had to be a state resident, have at least a 2.5 GPA score, as well as attend college at least part time. New York became the second state to offer free community college, but, became the first state to offer no cost two-year and four-year college tuition. New York had to change its policy and could only offer these scholarships to students whose families make less than $125,000 a year, and who do not have a prior degree.
