Standing for the National Anthem
The United States National anthem, to stand or not to stand? United States of America, single handedly the best nation in the world, has been taken over by controversy. Throughout everyday life, Americans have very few opportunities to come together in unity. Every Sunday, football fans gather together in bars, restaurants, and in the homes of friends and family to watch the best football teams play. It is embarrassing that those who choose to air their grievances do so by not supporting our country. Not standing for the anthem is disrespectful, breaking tradition and dishonorable to the flag. By choosing not to be present for the Star Spangled Banner is the equivalent to not acknowledging those, millions, who gave their lives for so Americans can sleep safely at night. Jarrett Stepman wrote, “To the majority of Americans, ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ is a moving tribute to what the country represents; freedom, duty, bravery and commitment to the men and women serving in the armed forces.” Those in our Military were not forced to join, they joined by their own free will. The tradition of our anthems goes back to 1918 during the World Series. American citizens were so shaken by World War I, the officials almost called off the game. But, since the soldiers in France were so eager to know who won, they kept the game on. During the 7th inning stretch, they played the, at the time, song to comfort all those attending. Later, in 1931 President Hoover signed a bill to assigning the song to our nation, making to our anthem. Then, in World War II the anthem was played before every game to show our respect. NFL commissioner, Elmer Layden says, “The national anthem should be just as much of a part of every game as the kick off. We must not drop it simply because the war is over. We should never forget what it stands
