The Courtesy of the Red White and Blue The American flag is majestic, waving in the wind, standing tall and proud. For the patriotic, respectful Americans, it brings us to our feet when the national anthem plays, mouthing the words with honor. America is a free country, often referred to as the promise land, where respect should be earned. The American flag is treated as a living object. It is respected and easily recognizable all around the world. It should be illegal to burn the American flag because not only is it disrespectful in many diverse ways but it is also un-American and heinous. 73% of students I surveyed said they were familiar with proper flag etiquette when they were questioned. In the past there was a controversy that went all the way to the United States Supreme Court. Gregory Lee Johnson was a member of the Revolutionary Communist Youth Brigade. They took part in a political demonstration during the 1984 National Republican Convention in Dallas, Texas to protest the Reagan Administration Polices. One of the demonstrators stole a flag off a flagpole and gave it to Johnson. Once they arrived at the City Hall, Johnson drenched that stolen flag in kerosene oil, and lit it on fire. Gregory Lee Johnson was then charged with violation of the Texas law that prohibits vandalizing respected objects. Johnson’s attorney argued that Gregory Lee Johnson’s act of flag burning was protected speech under the First Amendment. He stated that this expression towards the Reagan Administration was necessary for Johnson to speak his true feelings toward the administration. The state argued that the interests of its citizens and the community of Dallas, was of more importance than that of Johnsons symbolism act. They also said that they were trying to maintain the flag as a symbol of national unity. The decision came down to a controversial 5 to 4, favoring Johnson. The court said that
