The second chapter in The Humor Code by Peter McGraw and Joel Warner is titled, “Los Angeles- Who is Funny?” In this chapter they discussed both stand-up as well as improv, which are both very popular types of comedy, especially here in the United States. Both types of comedy are difficult because it is live, and you cannot undo and try again. Is there really is a difference between stand-up and improv? There is a definite difference between stand-up and improv because they are two totally different types of comedy. Many people either do not realize there is a difference or just do not know what the difference is. Comedians can be good at both but will typically choose one or the other to pursue to play with their strengths. You can practice for improv, but you cannot prepare for what you are going to do when you get on the stage because the point of improv is to make it up as you go along. Even though improv is made up on the spot, it will generally follow a certain structure called HAROLD. Stand-up is the opposite of that because you are able to have your whole routine memorized and perfected before you go on the stage. This usually makes improv more difficult because you have to come up with things on the …show more content…
HAROLD was discussed previously which is how each improv show is developed on. Stand-up can be in basically any format the performer chooses because they are in charge of how the show is run. Improv will have a group of people performing and coming up with different skits together on the spot. Stand-up is different because only one comic is up on the stage performing their personal act. Being the only one on the stage, you have full control of what happens and the direction you want to take the show. During improv, you may have a great idea of where you want to take the story, but another person may take it a totally different direction that isn’t as good, yet you have to go with
According to Aristotle, “Comedy can be any colloquy or performance generally intended to amuse or stimulate laughter”. In modern times, comedy can be found in different forms, such as television, movies, theatres and stand-up comedy.
To really understand someone's point of view, you have to walk in their shoes. People cast blame without knowing the whole truth. Sometimes the truth is that the person blamed is as innocent as a mockingbird. In To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch is used to teach us good behaviors such as, being a committed and loving father, treating everyone fairly and equally, and standing behind his beliefs.
Abbott and Costello were known as a double act or comedy duo, in which one comedian is considered the straight man and the other is called the comic or funny man. The straight man (Bud Abbott) was known to be intelligent and reasonable, in contrast the comic (Lou Costello) was commonly seen as a dumb and an unfortunate character ("Double Act"). Brooks Atkinson, in his Times piece describes:
“Everyone has a sense of humor. If you don't laugh at jokes, you probably laugh at opinions.” Once said an American poet, essayist, and existentialist philosopher Criss Jami, Killosophy. I also believe that humor and laugh play a big role in our lives. However, there are two types of people’s personality; people who understand humor and more open minded, and those who just cannot get it, and that, in my opinion, just makes their live harder. The article, “That’s Not Funny” by Caitlin Flanagan, is talking about college students that are not allowed to joke because of comedians restrictiveness in what they are talking
Large numbers of comedians began adopting the styles that Carlin is said to have pioneered, from his political rants shadowed by Lewis Black, his observational comedy and word play used by Jerry Seinfeld. Seinfeld in a posthumous article said "You could certainly say that George downright invented modern American stand-up comedy in many ways. Every comedian does a little George." Seinfeld goes onto say while chatting with other comedians about joke ideas they would say “Carlin does it.” or “Carlin already did it,” and “Carlin did it eight years ago.” Another disciple in the University of Carlin's is Louis Székely known to us as Louis C.K. Louis honored George in a post-obit tribute in 2010 at the New York Public Library by saying that Carlin had a far-reaching effect on his career when at the time C.K. has been in place where he felt his comedy was going nowhere. C.K. said in a moment where he felt like nothing was going right he heard a George Carlin interview and that Carlin mentioned his method of starting every year with a blank slate and that it caused him to become more introspective. C.K. then took that concept and ran with it and is now one of the most popular and revered standup comedians of today. "Anything that happens to me that is good is due to this guy(Carlin), I can tell you because I do what he
Throughout his whole career, Williams was always performing standup comedy. While many stand up comedians were using the same routine for almost every show they performed, Williams was performing a different show every night. He would improvise most of his material based on his audiences reaction instead of going into the show with all of his jokes thought out. This material helped change what stand up comedy was (Lombardi). Late comedian Joan Rivers says: “My favorite is Robin Williams. There's nobody like him. His mind is just wonderful. I respect him because he does what I do. I've seen him get up at The Comedy Store, work out a whole Carson shot and then come on Carson and make it look like it's easy. He takes nothing for granted. He knows exactly what he's doing. Robin Williams is one of those people
The majority of comedy is centered on identity. Comedy, like many other aspects of different cultures contains barriers that are broken only by an understanding of the context of the comedy. In order words, it is unlikely that an African would fully understand a joke by an American comedian if the joke draws from a primarily American historical or social context. Hence, what one can identify with affects what kind of jokes one can relate to. Identity is predicated on the ability to relate because identities are formed through personal interpretations of the environment one finds himself or herself in. These personal interpretations can be highly influenced by a manipulation of the context or amount of representation. Using Bigsby and Ruckus
“Devised theatre can start from anything. It is determined and defined by a group of people who set up an initial framework or structure to explore and experiment with ideas, images, concepts, themes, or specific stimuli that might include music, text, objects, paintings, or movement.” (Alison Oddey 1). Devised theatre, also called collaborative creation, is a form of theatre in which the script is created through a collaborative process with the actors and the playwright, rather than the traditional method of theatre with a premade script. Devised theatre is created through the process, collaboration, and multi-vision of the group. Similar to improvisational theatre, a devised theatre play is created in the rehearsal process from the performers interacting with each other. By the time the devised play is performed the work is a cohesive piece that is, for the most part, set in stone. This form of theatre is a modern form of theatre, that came about from the collaboration of many different type of artists, because of the need of the performers to have some input into what they are performing. The devised theatre form is most utilized in the USA, Great Britain, and Australia, but especially in our country. Devised theatre utilizes physical movements, rather than focusing on only the language.

Comedy in many ways is a form of art. People use comedy as a catalyst for conversation, a way to cope with grief and as a way to help deal with real world situations. Not everyone has a sense of humor and so many people have differing views on what they believe is funny. Comedy is often thinking outside of the box and having a different view on regular situations that occur in day to day life. Mitch Hedberg seen these regular situations and found a way to put them into a perspective many would never imagine. Hedberg was a very strange comedian with a unique style that other comedians could not pull off on stage. Everything from his comedic style to his appearance on stage is what had branded him as an individual in the comedic world. Mitch had a short lived life and had many problems during his
Comedy differs in the mood it approaches and addresses life. It presents situations which deal with common ground of man’s social experience rather than limits of his behaviour – it is not life in the tragic mode, lived at the difficult and perilous limits of the human condition.
As defined by Careers in Focus Performing Arts, “Comedians are entertainers who make people laugh.” One comedian in particular has accomplished this on a worldwide stage while having an enormous positive impact on the world around him. This comedian hails from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and his upbringing has had a significant impact on his personality and shaping the man he is today. He started off small but has since risen to perform in numerous blockbuster films, and his stand-up specials have been featured on Netflix, among others. Through his fame, this particular comedian has used his platform to help others through charity work and donations.
One of the most famous types of television comedy is the sketch comedy style. Greg M. Smith, in his article “Red Skelton, The Crack-up, and the Quick- change” explains how the move of vaudeville acts to television created the template for all sketch comedies. A small number of performers, often only one or two, “depended on interchangeable acts that could be juggled into different configurations for a show, the sketch necessarily is narratively compartmentalized. Plot elements from one sketch do not carry over to the next, necessitating that the performer slip from one role to another as he/she moves from sketch to sketch.” (n pag) Today’s sketch comedies continue to run independent multiple short sketches per episode. Although they may now have recurring characters, frequently still, only a single-time character is played. Just as there is a prevalence of one actor playing multiple roles per episode, so also are the situations, locations, and interactions often differentiated completely from one scene or show to the next. Some or all of these elements can be found in such shows as Monty Python's Flying Circus, Saturday Night Live, The Whi...
