Staging in "Six Characters in Search of an Author"
Pirandello's masterpiece, "Six Characters in Search of an Author" is
well known for its innovative techniques of characterization,
especially in the fullness of character as exhibited by the
Stepdaughter and the Father, but it is especially renowned, and
rightfully so, for the brilliant staging techniques employed by its
author. Pirandello uses his innovative staging techniques specifically
to symbolize, within the confines of the theater, the blending of the
theater and real life. Chief among these, of course, is the way in
which the author involves the audience in his production, to the point
which, like a medieval audience, they become part of the action, and
indeed, a character in its own right. The use of lines provided in the
playbill was the first of its kind; never before had an author dared to
ask the members of the audience to perform, even though unpaid, and
indeed, paying for the experience themselves. But without those lines,
how much less impressive would that moment be when the Director,
understandably at the end of his rope with the greedy characters (who
have been from the start trying to coerce him into writing a script for
non-union wages), shouts "Reality! Fantasy! Who needs this! What
does this mean?" and the audience, in unison, shouts back, "It's us!
We're here!" The moment immediately after that, when the whole cast
laughs directly at the audience, pointing at them in glee, is nearly
unbearable for an audience, as shown b! y the riot after the first
performance, when the audience not only ripped the seats out of the
theater, but stole the popcorn. Pirandello also used a technique he
inherited from the "Cirque de Soleil," involving a trapeze hung from
the catwalk. But though the trapeze was not in itself his own
invention, its use during the intermission as a means to annoy the
audience was absolutely innovative. He had gotten the idea from
watching the inhabitants at the mental institution in Switzerland where
his wife was recuperating from a Venetian holiday. The Swiss hospital,
renowned for its experimentation, had started a program of gymnastics,
meant to boost the patients' self-esteem. The Stepdaughter's foray
above the audience's heads, during the "intermission," is a direct
reflection of that Swiss technique; no one before Pirandello had dared
to use it in the theater before, but it not only symbolized neatly the
problems with defining reality inherent in the text, but kept the
audience from actually getting a rest during the intermission, since
...ition to costume, language and dialogue is what fixes the atmosphere and the action. In a manner very similar to Shakespeare, Calderón weaves description of the scene and of what is occurring into the main thrust of the play. In this sense, he is more than a poet, he is a dramatic craftsman who predominantly through his verse alone, creates a drama in its own right. All the clues to the plot and its themes lie in the text; the use of staging, costume, music and props can be used to enhance what lies in the script. What they give to the play is a fuller and more entertaining dramatic production. Thus, if used sensitively and intelligently by a director, these factors can increase the dramatic power of the work. The primary focus, however, remains the language, which relies on a high standard of acting in order to do justice to the subtleties of the play.
Throughout the years, America has pursued the performing arts in a large variety of ways. Theatre plays a dramatic and major role in the arts of our society today, and it takes great effort in all aspects. Musical Theatre, specifically, involves a concentration and strength in dance, acting, and singing. This is the base that Musical Theatre is built upon. For my Senior Project, I helped choreograph multiple scenes in a community musical “Thoroughly Modern Millie”. Choreography is a way of expressing oneself, but it has not always been thought of for that purpose. Agnes de Mille’s expressive talent has drastically affected how people see choreography today. Agnes de Mille’s influence in the world of dance has left a lasting impact in the Performing Arts Department, and her revolutionary works are still known today for their wit, lyricism, emotion, and charm.
Experts believe that writing workshops are an excellent way to get elementary school children interested in writing and setting the stage for a lifelong joy of writing. Lucy Calkins developed Writer’s Workshop which was based on many positions taken by her mentor Donald Graves (Feinberg 2). She identified six major components of the Writer’s Workshop, which make it so successful. The six components are: predictable structure, free choice, useful mini-lessons, daily independent writing time, conferencing with teachers and peers and modeling good writing.

In this quote, Porter pretended himself as a porter of hell gate. This is considered as one mysterious writing style. Many details in the story are described as supernatural events which pointed the ostensible win of Macbeth is unrealistic. Macbeth is on the way of the hell, his guilty murdering will crash him forever. It is also one beginning symbolize of tragedy.
William Shakespeare, poet and playwright, utilized humor and irony as he developed specific language for his plays, thereby influencing literature forever. “Shakespeare became popular in the eighteenth century” (Epstein 8). He was the best all around. “Shakespeare was a classic” (8). William Shakespeare is a very known and popular man that has many works, techniques and ways. Shakespeare is the writer of many famous works of literature. His comedies include humor while his plays and poems include irony. Shakespeare sets himself apart by using his own language and word choice. Shakespeare uses certain types of allusions that people always remember, as in the phrase from Romeo and Juliet, “star-crossed lovers”.
Certain characters undergo characterization in both plays. The character that struck me from “A Doll’s House” by Henrik Ibsen was Nora; which in this case is the main character. From the “The Crucibles” by Arthur Miller the character that stood out to me with her independence was Elizabeth. Both of these characters have their own personality, which we can establish through the stage directions and quotes in the play.

As said in Wicked, “I don’t know if I’ve been changed for the better, but because I knew you I have been changed for good.” This quote is true for me and many other people who have discovered comfort in Broadway Theatre. I polled a facebook group what their favorite Broadway show was out of Wicked, Phanton of the Opera, Hamilton, and Dear Evan Hansen to see what the two most popular shows are. A total of fifty people answered and Wicked came out on top with nineteen votes and Phantom of the Opera came in second with fourteen votes. Broadway is a popular genre that many people enjoy and Broadway has opened many musicals and plays. In my speech, I will be discussing a short history of Broadway and then the shows Wicked and Phantom of the Opera. Now as the show begins, please turn off cell-phones, thank you and enjoy the show!

Tong’s concern is that if the atmospheric temperature goes on increasing just like now, soon his country will submerge in water in the near future. He calls for a joint rapid action among world countries to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.
Martin Esslin, an established drama director, scholar, and critic, approaches his analysis of drama by drawing on his practical experience as a director of plays. Esslin implicitly assumes that drama is the most elite of the artistic genres when he directly declares the purpose of his book, which is to answer the question "why should those concerned with art resort to drama rather than any other form of communication?" Esslin then immediately poses another question that he seems to take as a prerequisite for the first question: "What is the underlying, basic nature of dramatic form and what is it that drama can express better than any other form of communication?"
There are many of great writers of our past but the one that stands out the most would have to be William Shakespeare. William Shakespeare wrote plays and other literary pieces in the late 15 hundreds and early 16 hundreds that we still read and study today. Some of his well known pieces he wrote were Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, and Julius Caesar. He wrote a wide variety of pieces being from poetry, tragedies, and even comedies. Even though William Shakespeare's writing wasn't as popular at the time, today his work is very popular and many people worldwide still look at it today. At the time William Shakespeare might not have realized what he was doing and just wrote these pieces because that was what he liked to do but what he did was impact our society into what it is today. By doing all of the amazing things William Shakespeare did in his lifetime he helped impact our society by changing our English language, inspire a very famous murder that changed the U.S. history, tell us stories, influenced other writers, and change the theatre world.
