The air was fresh and chilly. The trail came out of the forest and we joined a logging road and continued our climb. We re-entered the forest and continued to climb...yes we were gaining altitude quickly and soon our hearts were thumping! This was no longer a gentle climb.
Hiking the switch backs we continued to climb. The mosquitoes and flies dictated our pace. Quickly, we discovered that if we maintained a decent walking speed the insects didn't bother us. However, the second we stopped moving, the critters instantly found us and proclaimed us as lunch! Continuing to ascend we noticed the underbrush beginning to thin. Our legs enjoyed the soft pack trail and we marveled at the natural staircases made of tree roots. The trail was challenging in sections as we navigated roots, rocks and slippery sections.
Our hard work climbing was rewarded as we were afforded peek a boo views of Howe Sound. Like magic the fog lifted as we neared the ridge line and we could see for miles! Passing through alpine meadows we finally arrived at St. Marks summit. The view from the summit was breathtaking. Peering over the ridge, 1400 metres to the ocean below, we couldn’t help but think the reward far outweighed the
The emerald jewel of Brooklyn, Prospect Park is often called the borough’s backyard and has been a serene and idyllic retreat for Brooklynites for well over a century now. The physical geography of the North Pacific Coast is not the greatest attraction to tourists in some cases, but the land itself is the winning prize that attracts many to its coast. Much of the North Pacific coast is covered in mountainous terrains that give the land its beauty. The land is very rugged when approaching the mountains and, “is a land of dramatic coastal mountains cut by glacially eroded fiords and islands,” (Birdsall). The rough terrain gives transportation in and around the region in the north difficulties resulting in the limitation of accessibility to only “air and water,” (Birdsall). “Brady Glacier is the largest glacier in the Fairweather Range of the St. Elias Mountain in southeast Alaska,” (Drendochology to the ...
After a great night of sleep we headed out to the world renown mountain of Jackson Hole. It is known for being the steepest mountain on which a ski resort is set up. It is also know for having a great view of Grand Teton, one of the highest peaks in the Rocky Mountains. We could not have asked for a better day of riding. there was a fresh 14” of snow under our boards and after a little bit of exploring we found some great out of bounds and woods riding.
There are many beautiful places in this wonderful area of Oregon. In fact the whole basin was deemed a National Scenic Area. Besides the whole area there are two others natural areas that are very prominent. Among its many waterfalls Kalamath Falls is by far the most breathtaking. Not only can you enjoy the waterfall its self but also if you look hard enough you can see life happening all around you. If you travel up a lot higher you will see the natural trademark of the Pacific Northwest, Mt. Hood. With its 11,239 feet of beauty, what’s not to love? This amazing mountain is not only a natural area, but an area for recreation as well. From the river bellow to the mountains above the Columbia River Basin has a lot to offer.

He knew where he was headed and that was all he needed. He came to rest at the top of a particularly tall dune at mid day. Unshouldering his pack and bundle, he rifled through his back pocket for a meal that had been packed for him by the kind young lady at the inn from three nights ago.
