Today at my internship, I observed classes and picked up a few new pointers that great performance coaches possess. In particular, I learned that part of being a sports performance coach is that it is crucial that you know the mechanics and break down of an athletic movement as well as the anatomy of the human body. For example, at my internship today, I learned the mechanics behind a sprint when observing the linear acceleration class. For a sprint, your feet are leaning forward, opposite hand forward and other hand back, feet weight is distributed between both feet, head is straight, and eyes are looking straight forward. Knowledge of an athletic movement and of the human body is important for a sports performance coach to have because it shows the athletes and their parents that your training has a purpose and that you …show more content…

Today’s internship schedule started out with evaluations as well as preparing for the college prep class at 3:30 p.m. After evaluations and prepping for the college prep class, the College Prep class began. During the College Prep class, I observed all the athletes giving great effort. Also, there was a smooth transition between transitioning from one weightlifting exercise to another. Athletes did not have to wait to use equipment. After the College Prep class, I observed a performance coach giving an athlete an evaluation. From shadowing a sports performance coach, evaluating the athlete has to do with testing their baseline scores for the following tests of the 10 and 20 yard dash, 5-10-5 shuttle run, broad jump, and vertical jump. Most student-athletes grow up as very innocent lads bedecked with tremendous talents and become very promising in sports. Thus, they become rays of hope for their families, neighborhoods, and schools yet to be determined. Like the lamb in William Blake’s poem The Lamb, they are fed “by the stream & o’er the mead; gave…clothing of delight, softest clothing, wooly, bright…making all the vales rejoice.” (Smith 24) Then they are exposed to the life of hard work in which only the fittest survives. This makes them ready for the different challenges in the sports scene.
Not all colleges’ focus on ensuring that their athletes succeed both their respective sport and in their education. The University of Oklahoma (referred to as “OU”) demonstrates its commitment to success in the classroom and on the field, by providing students with the Sooner Housing Center. The Sooner Housing Center provides a family-like environment, which ensures OU athletes maintain a strong balance between academics and athletics by emphasizing the athlete’s educational achievements in addition to their sports accomplishments. Living in a focused community guides athletes in the right direction since performativity plays a large role in their lives.

Throughout the country young men and women are losing their priority for an education. To attend a university should be a highly cherished privilege, and it should be an even greater honor to play athletics for the university. Therefore, the writer supports the decision that the “student” comes before “athlete” in student-athlete. Playing for pay should be considered a job for “professionals”. It is very clear that college athletes are very devoted and committed adults. It is also very easy to see that these young adults are swamped with practice and game schedules. College sports are a major revenue producing industry. Athletic programs and their student-athletes can achieve national recognition and generate millions of dollars in revenue for their university. Colleges use this revenue to invest in players, pay for their education, and provide state of the art training facilities, which are used to improve their athletic performance. As revenue driven colleges begin to prioritize athletics, the emphasis on the quality and standards of an undergraduate education are diminishing. Compromising their academic acceptance requirements, universities have now found that the educational ability of their newly accepted student athletes are inadequate, to say the least (Gurney). To satisfy my curiosity and gain a broad understanding of athletic training, I chose to interview my boss, Pete Stevens. Pete is employed by Physiotherapy Associates, a nationwide corporation that specializes in physical/occupational therapy, athletic training, and fitness/sports training. He has worked there for three years. He is currently the Head Athletic Trainer for The Arizona Rattlers. Pete received his undergraduate degree in Athletic Training at Boise State University in Idaho, followed by a graduate degree in Recreation from Arizona State University. I am interested in pursuing a career in athletic training. My school has a partnership with my local football team. I hope to visit your company for a day to obtain a better of the career I have chosen. I need to understand what qualifications I must have for such a career. I have always wanted to go into athletic training. Just imagine, if I got big enough in that, I can possibly be helping out a famous football player. To me, it would just be amazing to go and help somebody like Rob Gronkowski. It is possible that my favorite sports team will hire me. My favorite sports teams are the New England Patriots, Oklahoma City Thunder, and the Cincinnati Reds.
College is a time for young people to develop and grow not only in their education, but social aspects as well. One of the biggest social scenes found around college campuses are athletic events, but where would these college sports be without their dedicated athletes? Student athletes get a lot of praise for their achievements on the field, but tend to disregard the work they accomplish in the classroom. Living in a college environment as a student athlete has a great deal of advantages as well as disadvantages that affect education and anti-intellectualism.
