Sports are a huge part of American culture. With football, basketball, and baseball being the most popular, the sports industry is worth an estimated 422 billion dollars. Of course, there would be no sports industry without the fans. The fanatics are what make sports so special. Even though each devotee is unique, most can be categorized into four main groups – Bandwagon fans, Casual fans, Hometown/True fans, and Coaches. The Bandwagon Fan We all know this guy. A Bandwagon Fan jumps from team to team based on popularity. If their supposed favorite team is struggling, they’ll move on to another team. A lot of the time, they don’t begin to root for a team until the playoffs. A Bandwagon Fan also follows their favorite player around. For example, when LeBron James signed a contract with the Miami Heat, his fans from all over the world immediately claimed to be Miami Heat fans. Most of them didn’t even know who the other team members were. These fan bases seem to pop up overnight and usually don’t last very long. Want to know if someone is a bandwagon fan? Just ask them a question about the team’s history. Chances are, they won’t know the answer, Being a Bandwagon Fan has its pros and cons. Pros – you’re probably rooting for the best team in the league so they’re more than likely going to be the favorites to win the championship. Also, since you don’t really have emotional ties with the team, you won’t be disappointed with the end result of the season. Cons – you’re labeled a Bandwagon Fan. That’s never good. You’re not a true fan and you make lifelong fans look bad but labeling yourself one. The biggest con of all – you’re at the bottom tier of all fans. Nobody likes you except you’re fellow bandwagoners. The Casual Fan There ar... ... middle of paper ... ... like you’re on the team but on the whole different level. Most importantly, it makes you feel like this is your purpose in life because it’s all you ever do – which can be a good or bad thing. Cons of being The Coach – nobody wants to watch the game with you. They think you’re annoying and take it way too seriously. Sadly, you’re 100 percent dedicated to sports and don’t really do anything else. Your peers get sick of hearing about sports because of you. Your obsession could kill your social life. All in all, sports fans are some of the most interesting people on the planet. Bandwagon fans like to switch it up every now and then. Casual spectators are there for the pure enjoyment of the show. Hometown/True Fans show their support through thick and then and The Coaches lives revolve around athletics. Even though they’re put into groups, every fan is one of a kind.
