The significance of this story’s title called Spoonface Steinberg is that Spoonface is this little autistic girl’s name whose face is described as round as a spoon. And if you looked into a spoon you will see a face like hers. 2. There were many important events in this story like in the beginning how Spoonface is describing her love for the opera music. Mrs. Sputz, the cleaning lady, says that everybody is different and we should be happy in it. Furthermore, being different is who we are. One more important event was when Spoonface’s doctor tells her the story of his mother who was in the concentration camp and she was very brave. Moreover, the poor people there never gave up hope and some of the little children were skinner than her because they didn’t eat enough. He said all this to help Spoonface, little children were braver than anyone else. The human spirit was in the middle. No matter how bad it is that we’re dying, it matters more that we are still alive. Things were drawn in the concentration camps like the butterflies flying to heaven. Another important event was when there was a reference made to a Bible character Job who suffered many difficulties in life similar to Spoonface.

This story had no fluff. It had no happy ending. It was in no way uplifting. It was a book about hopelessness, and how tragic life can be. None of the characters find happiness. No one is rescued from their misery. What makes this book powerful is that sometimes that is the way life is. Sometimes there is no happy ending, and sometimes there is no hope. It would be nice if that were not true, but it is. And this book shows the gritty side of life, the sad reality. Sometimes things do not work out the way we would like them to, and sometimes there is nothing we can do about it. As depressing as this may be as a theme, it is important to realize that it is true. While optimism is usually admirable, too much may be ignorant. Hopelessness exists. It can certainly be seen in real life, and it can certainly be seen in this book.
Primo Levi tells the readers the explicit details of the concentration camp Auschwitz, in his memoir, “Survival in Auschwitz.” The way in which the author talks about the camp is as if it is its own society. There is a very different and very specific way of life at the camp; their basic needs are provided for them, but only in the simplest form in order to have a small chance of survival. There is no clean, drinkable water, so instead they drink coffee, they eat soup twice a day, and a small amount of bread (26). There are thousands of diverse people living in the camp, who are forced to live with each other and work in a factory, reducing their self-worth to merely factors of production. Denial is another theme in this film which helped to save the Jewish race. Even as they are forced into the ghetto and later into labor camps they are in denial of their real situation. When they are in the ghetto they are optimistic and believe that the bad times will pass, and even when killing surrounds them they won’t let themselves believe the worst.

This topic shows that long before the concentration camps, Jews were being singled out and treated terribly. The study of the Holocaust matters to show people what happened so that others can learn from it and learn to accept people no matter what their religion. It must not be forgotten because the people who suffered in it should be remembered. It was a terrible time that should never happen again. All of the laws passed leading up to the Night of the Broken kept increasing Hitler's power and ability to persecute the Jews because there was little reaction to his actions; the violence and persecution increased leading to the final solution because of this indifference.
The train comes squealing to a stop at the station. Hundreds of Jews with all the belongings that they can fit into a suitcase with them exit a tightly packed train car. Immediately they are sorted into two groups. One heads into the heart of the camp to start a life of hard labor. The other goes to ‘disinfecting’. They are happy, cheerful, and suspect nothing as they approach the ‘showers’ for disinfecting. After they have rid themselves of their clothes, jewelry, and belongings, they enter the showers and are immediately locked in. They begin to feel suspicious and afraid, but by now, it is far too late for them to do anything. As the small pellets rain down from the roof, the terror builds to an unspeakable level. They try anything they can think of to get out. Screaming, clawing, praying, or pounding, anything goes. Slowly they begin to die. After about twenty minutes, it is all over. Sadly, this was a daily event at many concentration camps during the Holocaust. At Auschwitz, an occurrence such as this happened multiple times every day. Auschwitz was a designated death factory, killing thousands every day. Although there were many concentration camps during the Holocaust, the most notorious camp was Auschwitz.
Once again minor Nazi soldiers are to blame for the Holocaust because they didn’t question decisions, they ultimately pulled the trigger, and separated families. It was madame Schachter imagined the fire, fire that was lit by soldiers. It was that fire that soldiers used to murder millions of people. We must never forget these crimes that humanity has committed, we must never make these mistakes
The story contains times when the SS officials would shoot any Jew that was not in their place or call them certain things that would make them feel depressed. One example is when the character Eliezer and hid "block" were marching their way out of Buna and a SS officer had yelled out, "Faster you tramps, you flea-ridden dogs!" (Wiesel 85). This is a prime example of dehumanization, having the Jews feel like filthy dogs instead of human beings. The SS had no problem killing a Jew who was not keeping the same pace as the others . "They had orders to shoot anyone who could not sustain the pace. Their fingers on the triggers, they did not deprive themselves of the pleasure. If one of us stopped for a second, a quick shot eliminated the filthy dog"(Wiesel 85)
The treatment of Jews in this time period was abhorrent. The mere fact that Jews were placed into a death camp and exterminated was sufficient. The play’s major conflict is the loneliness experienced by the two elderly sisters, after outliving most of their relatives.
