An excellent example of a person who received the karma they deserved is Butch Weldy. Butch Weldy was unkind to most he encountered, and would bully many until he was involved in a freak accident and got exceedingly hurt. As Butch Weldy tried to receive some justice from his accident he was sitting at court and stated, “ I sat on the witness stand as blind as Jack the Fiddler “. Butch wronged Jack the Fiddler by stealing from him, so as to his karma he lost his sight. Another township member is Dora Williams, who was unaliving men for their money. After marrying her last husband, Count Navigato, she states, “ He poisoned me, I think “. Count Navigo left Dora to be found by authorities and forgotten. Dora Williams received her karma based on her greedy choices during her life. One citizen of Spoon River who only married to gain more wealth and not for love is Dora Williams. Dora Williams would find men who were very wealthy and in a very bad mental state, so they were extremely easy to manipulate. Benjamin Painter marries Benjamin Painter even though all she sees looking at him is utterly disgusting. He stated, “She, who survives me, snared my soul” expressing that Mrs. Benjamin Pantier only used him for his money and not for the love he has to offer. The choices Mrs. Benjamin Pantier made on how she chose to love will forever change the way Reuban Pantier views love. Someone who seeks love in the town of Spoon River is Reuban Pantier. Reuban sought love because he got very little from his parents based on how his mother chose to find love. Reuben Painter fell for his teacher Emily Sparks which is evident as he states, “ To your hope that would not give up on me to your love that saw me still as good “. Reuben was thankful for Emily because she showed him the love and support that he craved from his parents, but never received from them. Reuben and Minerva are similar because they both craved being loved and cherished by one another, because their parents didn’t ever show their love and compassion for each other.
