A bond like no other exist between a man and his dog. In the book Spill Simmer Falter Wither, by Sara Baume, we follow the two main characters Ray, an introverted man, and his adopted dog One Eye. Both Ray and One Eye are the same in a lot of ways but are also different in many others. As we continue to study both Ray And One Eye we see why they are alike and unalike through their actions. One important point is, the happiness they bring to each other. Both Ray and One Eye enjoy eachothers company. “You’re grunting you're getting grunt, wagging your tail estatically as though we’d been separated for forever”(Baume 117). One Eye is acting like he has not seen Ray in a long time, even though Ray was just out for some errands. This shows One Eye does not enjoy being without Ray and is empty without him. Ray has changed a lot since he adopted One Eye, he enjoys not doing everything alone. Ray already enjoyed sunbathing but now that One Eye enjoys it they, “sit out every fine day”(Baume 85). Ray is showing a lot happiness in finding a friend and not being alone anymore. In contrast while they bring each other happiness they also both bring each other a good amount of grief. “We are driving, driving, driving”(Baume 129). One Eye is aggressive, I fn alash you’ve forsaken your football and clamped the collie’s muzzle“”(Baume 62). As can be seen even though One Eye does not like other humans or dogs but instead of running away, he confronts them, unlike Ray. Ray on the other hand tries to avoid humans, “I don’t like urinals but there’s no one else here so I hurry up and use it”(Baume 152). It is obvious that if that restroom was busy Ray would have never used it, he would make himself suffer because he is afraid to be around humans. In the end both are shy, but One Eye is aggressive when he feels threatened, and Ray will avoid people at all
