Thank you! Thank you! It is with great honor that I will accept this highest of achievements. Wow! This is a truly surreal moment for me. Thank you Major League Baseball and Cooperstown for nominating me for the Hall of Fame.
First of all, I would like to take a moment to recognize all of the people who have helped me become the ballplayer that I am today. I want to first recognize my teammates along the way who have made these past fifteen years the best years of my life. I knew I could always rely on you guys to make me laugh when I was down after I struck out. My favorite memory with you guys is from the World Series a few years ago. I remember being ahead of the Yankees by one run when Alex Rodriguez Jr hit that ball that I caught and robbed over the fence from being a home run. Then, the next thing I know I’m being mauled by 24 other grown men as we celebrated our World Series victory just like kids on TV do. The look on everyone’s faces was priceless as it was somewhere between shock and amazement! It has truly been a privilege to play with you guys and I can honestly say that without the assistance of you all that I could not have succeeded on my own.

for my entire career. Even during my biggest slumps, I always knew that I had the confidence and support of everyone in the Nationals organization. This is a big part of why I chose to stay here for so long and why it makes it so hard to leave. It brings me great sadness to state that I will never play ball in D.C. ever again. I honestly still cannot wrap my mind around that idea. And thus, I also want to thank my fans for never giving up on me during my struggles as well as for celebrating my accomplishments. Without the fans, I would have been without a job, and for that I say thank
1.Hook: Two men, one tall, elderly and magical and the other black, young and fierce have a lot more in common than you may think.
Babe Ruth. Hank Aaron. Nolan Ryan. Cal Ripken Jr. These outstanding Major League Baseball players deservedly earned their spot in baseball’s Hall of Fame. Hank Aaron held the league’s home run record with 755 for 33 years, until it was broken by Barry Bonds at the height of the steroid era (Andy). Aaron has never been accused of steroid use; however, Bonds has. Nolan Ryan can be found at the top of the all-time strikeout list, but Roger Clemens is not far behind. Once again, the former has never been proven to have been on steroids, while the latter was found guilty. It is not fair to the players who achieved their greatness on their own merit to be surpassed, or even grouped alongside, those who cheated the game. The Hall of Fame needs to
The use of rhetorical devices in Lou Gehrig’s Farewell to Baseball Address helps the author get the appropriate feelings conveyed throughout the speech. During the speech, a common rhetorical device used is a rhetorical question. This device is a question being asked that isn’t meant to have an answer. Lou Gehrig is looking on the positive side by saying, “Which of you wouldn’t consider it the highlight of his career just to associate with them for even one day?” (par. 2). Gehrig is downplaying the whole situation at this moment and is trying to show his gratitude towards everyone who has helped him out during his career. Another rhetorical device he uses in his speech is anaphora.
Do you know anything about Jackie Robinson? Well don’t worry, if you don’t I will explain to you. Jackie Robinson is an inspiration by entering the Major League Baseball and changing history. I think this because he made white players accept him and by changing segregation.
On July 23, 1962, in the charming village of Cooperstown, New York, four new members were inducted into baseball’s Hall of Fame. As they gathered around the wooden platform, the fans reminisced about America’s national pastime. Edd Roush and Bill McKechnie, sixty-eight and seventy-four years old respectively, were two of the inductees that day (Robinson 142). They were old-timers chosen by the veterans’ committee. Bob Feller and Jackie Robinson, both forty-two, were youngsters by comparison. According to the rules of the Hall of Fame, a player must be retired for five years before he can be considered for induction. Both Feller and Robinson were elected in the first year they were eligible (141).
Willie Mays once said, “In order to excel, you must be completely dedicated to your chosen sport. You must also be prepared to work hard and be willing to accept constructive criticism. Without one-hundred percent dedication, you won’t be able to do this.” Willie Mays that gave all that he had and took criticism because he was black. He would always show up to the games to support his team even if he was benched.
For this rhetorical analysis paper I chose one of my favorite, and most famous, sports speeches of all time, Lou Gehrig’s farewell to baseball address. Lou Gehrig was a famous baseball player in the 1920’s and 30’s. Lou didn’t really need to use a attention getting introduction, he was well known and loved by so many that people piled into Yankee Stadium to watch and listen to him give this speech. Although he didn’t need an attention getter, he began his speech with one of the greatest baseball quotes of all time, “Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about a bad break I got. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth.” (Gehrig, 1939) Every single time I hear or read that opening line it sends chills down my spine and stops me for a moment to reflect on everything that is going on in my own life.
Branch Rickey started his baseball career as just a mediocre player at best. (Baseball Hall of Fame) He may not have been the best of players, but he definitely made a huge impact on baseball. Branch Rickey was one of the most important and influential people in forming and shaping the way baseball is today. Branch Rickey created the minor league farm club system, which today gives young players the opportunity to develop and enhance the skills they need to be great. Branch Rickey’s most important contribution to baseball was when he signed Jackie Robinson. Branch Rickey took it as his responsibility to get African Americans their right to play ball in the Major Leagues. The signing of Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball and gave African Americans the right to play baseball in the Major Leagues.
when I was ten years old I lost my grandpa, it was a very bad experience for me but it made me stronger. I remember when he taught me how to catch a baseball, ride a bike, mow the lawn and a lot of other things that I will forever cherish in my heart. the memory I will never forget though is when he taught me everything I needed to know about baseball. we would always go outside together and he would do certain agilities with me to build my stamina, teach me how to catch a pop-fly and he would work on pitching with me which is actually one of my main position that I play today. baseball was a big part of my grandpas life and he always wanted me to play In the major leagues. once he passed away my motives for playing in the major leagues increased.
The world is a very different place than what it was in the 1920’s; however, despite our differences, many things have stayed the same. No matter what, there’s always something to refer back to. Nearly one-hundred years ago, the 1920’s holds a great deal of historical events that changed the world. One of these historical events is when Babe Ruth changed the outlook on negro leagues and african american baseball players. Ruth could do many things that other people couldn’t in baseball. He in general was an amazing baseball player, but he also did something much more, something that would change the world’s views of not just him, but everybody.
I see great things in baseball. It's our game-- the American game. It will take our people out-of-doors, fill

If you have ever met me, or know me, you would know that I love sports, and you would know my favorite sport of all time is baseball, and that my favorite sports team is Boston Red Sox. I am what you call a die-hard Red Sox fan; you can compare me as Red Sox fan to actor Jimmy Fallon’s character in the movie, Fever Pitch. My strong love for the Red Sox comes from my step-dad Phil. Phil has always been like a second father to me since he and my mom got together, back in early 2000s. Phil is always trying to teach and help me learn from my mistakes, and I have made my share of them. Nevertheless, I also cherish the moments I spend with him at Red Sox games. The experiences I have at Red Sox games are moments in my life, I will never forget, that I will always remember, One game in particular I most remember is my first Red Sox game at Fenway Park.
So thank you judge Ball, Vanessa, Sharon, Susan, Dan, the rest of the panel, my peers, and whoever else I’ve missed. You guys gave me the opportunity to live. And though the sun sets on this chapter of my journey and the dawn rises on the next one I will always be eternally grateful and indebted to you all.
One of the ways to get in the Hall of Fame is by making it in the All Star game. A player has to get voted in the all star game by fans. Then, they get picked by a captain to see if they are in - the more votes they have, the better. If a captain picks a player, then the player are in the All-Star Game and is one step closer to the Hall of Fame (Naismith 2).
