An Analysis “Bush’s Speech on Immigration” Immigration into the United States isn’t a new problem, it is an advanced problem in which it is evolved over the last hundred years or so. Although immigration is often considered negative and bad, it also can have some good, through recent studies, it suggest that immigration also has a positive impact on the economy. In the year 2012, it was reported that 18.7 million immigrants were naturalized U.S. citizens, accounting for 46 percent of the foreign-born population (40.8 million) and 6 percent of the total U.S. population (313.9 million) according to ACS estimates. Both articles address their views of the debate. In “Bush’s Speech on Immigration,” Bush states that yes it is a problem that we have …show more content…
The article “Litterers or Life Savers,” was published by In These Times, which indicates the not everyone is going to come across the article, meaning you actually have to be researching the topic or have an interest in reading about immigration. Different from other publishers In These Times is a non-profit Internet magazine with no ties to corporate individuals, saying it’s an independent magazine. As with the article “Bush’s Speech on Immigration,” it was published by The New York Times, which in itself is a more well-known publisher, it was everywhere for everyone to read, weather it is in the newspaper or internet or even watch it on the news. At some point everyone would come across the article and read the key points of …show more content…
Bush starts by saying that we need to stop them coming over illegally, and them risking their lives in the process, by doing so keep the bad people from coming over, but also helping the ones that are doing it for a good reason and put them into a program to help them get there citizenship. It’s a problem and he wants to find a way to stop it, or even reduce it. Bush states that “Our objective is straightforward: The border should be open to trade and lawful immigration, and shut to illegal immigrants, as well as criminals, drug dealers and terrorists.” One of the main solutions that Bush addresses is to increase Border Patrol from 9,000 to 12,000 agents, and increase funding by 66 percent. Also saying that no we don’t have complete control of the border, but is determined to change that. At the same time, Bush wants to launch technologically advanced border security initiative in American history. Unfortunately, it will take time for all these new plans to come into place but Bush has a solution for that too, by adding up to 6,000 Guard members, and adding in new equipment. “The United States is not going to militarize the southern border. Mexico is our neighbor, and our friend.” (Bush’s Speech on Immigration) Bush claims that we are taking many new
1. According to Pizarro, “Chicanas and Chicanos face the highest dropout rates of any major ethnic group in the United States- as many as half of a given cohort of Chicana and Chicano students does not complete high school- and their relative educational outcomes have been stable or have worsened over time.” (Pizarro, 1).
Schwarzenegger’s first argument is that congress needs to take security seriously in order to create a stronger border (26). To persuade his audience he uses pathos, referring to 9/11 to appeal to emotions associated with it, and therefore stresses the value of better equipment and resources, which would result from a stronger border (Schwarzenegger 26). He says, “The presence of the citizens’ groups along our border is a reminder of the federal government’s failure to do its job. Government officials, not private citizens, are responsible for our borders. They need to do it right and to do it right now” (Schwarzenegger
Immigration has been a topic that people have struggled to accept for centuries. The questions often asked are, what are we going to do about it? And should we allow them in? The problem here is that technically most Americans were immigrants at one point unless they are Native American. With every new wave of immigrants, there is a reemergence of fears that control our views. Both David Cole and Barry R. Chiswick agree to allow immigration and convey that the views most people hold aren't properly based on real evidence.
Did you know America is a nation built on immigrants? (Schwartz,2017). Immigration is a very popular topic right now and it's important to talk about it. Keeping innocent people out of our country based on fear is not right. Immigrants and terrorists are two different words, but some people may believe it is one. It is not right to keep immigrants out of our country based on religion, gender, or ethnicity. My reasons are immigrants are in need of help, we need to stick to our values, and they make a contribution to America. As you keep reading you will understand why.
The United States of America has the largest foreign-born population in the world. With nearly thirteen percent of the total population being foreign-born, one may find it hard to imagine an immigrant-free country (U.S. Bureau of the Census). Immigration has been an integral part of the United States’ overall success and the country’s economy since it was established and without it, would have never been founded at all. Although there are some negative issues associated with immigration and many native-born Americans believe to be more of a problem than a solution, overall it actually has a positive effect. Immigrants in America, among other things, fill jobs where native-born Americans may not want to work or cannot work, they contribute to Social Services and Medicaid through taxes and they help provide the backbone of America, especially by working jobs that natives may have not even considered.
It is my honor to speak before the House of Representatives and Senate and officially state that Mexico and the United States have signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. This treaty ends the Mexican-American War as Mexico has agreed to cede all regions that rightfully belong to the United States of America. The Mexican-American War started in April of 1846 and ended yesterday in February of 1848. I consider the war against Mexico as a conflict that largely benefited the United States. President James Polk and all of my fellow US Congressman were reasonable and justifiable to dictate that Mexico obstructed and interfered with the freedom and rights of the citizens in our beautiful nation, specifically in Texas. The Mexican general, Santa Anna, sent troops to invade one of the Union’s state, Texas, and the act is clearly an attack against the United States. In this speech, I will address to the critics of the war the facts, reasons and my clarifications to justify that the United State’s action to declare war against Mexico was reasonable.
When things go downhill in your life, you tend to only focus on what you’re going through and completely ignore the fact that many others could be going through the same exact thing. It’s not easy to accept that other people are feeling the same pain as you. Something goes wrong, it’s like the end of the world for you. That was me at the age of 9.
Whether it may have positive effects or negative ones, there’s no question that illegal immigration is an issue that cannot be ignored. And the problem isn’t necessarily finding a solution to help slow or prevent illegal immigration. It’s figuring out which solution will work the best for us. We will always encourage foreigners to come to our country, just as long as the proper steps are taken to do
“They 're bringing drugs, they 're bringing crime,” He is addressing that all the Mexicans are drug dealers and killers that’s not true. He cannot be stating all the Mexicans because not all of them are drug dealers or killers. “I will build a great, great wall on our southern border and I will make Mexico pay for that wall,” If he wants to make a big wall so any Mexicans can enter and make them pay for it that’s just stupid Trump is the one that wants the one he should be the one paying for something he wants. This wall is not going to stop Mexicans from coming to the U.S; they can still come in a plane of by sea. He says he wants to built a wall, than if he is paying where will he get all that money just to make stupid wall, the U.S has no loose money to give out to put the wall up.
First, immigrants come to the U.S. to work and bring valuable skills which help grow the economy despite the negative views surrounding their part in the U.S. economy. Since the 2008-2009 recession the view on immigration and its effects on the economy has been more negative than positive (Peri, 2012). A study done by Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government found that about 50 percent of American adults believe that immigrants burden the country because they, “take jobs, housing, and healthcare”, while the other 50 percent believe that, “immigrants strengthen the country due to their hard work and talents” (Delener & Ventilato, 2008). Over the past decade, “over half of the increase in the U.S. labor force,… was the result of immigration-l...
The United States of America, being a country founded by immigrants, is known all over the world as the land of great opportunities. People from all walks of life travelled across the globe, taking a chance to find a better life for them and their family. Over the years, the population of immigrants has grown immensely, resulting in the currently controversial issue of illegal immigration. Illegal immigrants are the people who have overstayed the time granted on their US, visa or those who have broken the federal law by crossing the border illegally. Matt O’Brien stated in his article “The government thinks that 10.8 million illegal immigrants lived in the country in January 2009, down from a peak of nearly 12 million in 2007.”(Para, 2) While some argue that illegal immigrants burden the United States of America and its economy, others believe that they have become essential and are an important part of the US, economy.
Immigrants have always been an important part of United States’ population. Each year, there are hundreds of thousands of immigrants, from all around the world, including legal and illegal, come into the United States for job opportunities, new life, or the American Dream. “Immigrants have contributed significantly to the development of the United States. During the Lincoln administration, immigrants were actually encouraged to come to America, as they were considered valuable to the development of the country.” (Soylu & Buchanan, 2013). They believe that the US will give them more freedom, protection, and opportunities, which sometimes it becomes the major issues for immigrants. That’s why “the U.S. population is becoming more racially and
A common misconception regarding illegal immigration in the United States is that too many people are being allowed into the country which can jeopardize national security. The truth, however, is that President Bush's proposal actually helps maintain the security of American boarders. Also, in addition to the proposal, vast efforts are being made to secure U.S. boarders from terrorists. Boarder patrol has expanded and boarder protection funding has increased by 40 percent in the last two years. (Office of Press Secretary, 2004 at ... ...
Thank you Kenneth, I understand your point. However, my point is, why even call them immigrants in a negative light? This is what I am upset about, I do not like the classification. I wish we could just call them people, not associate them as being immigrants. I think this has a negative connotation to it that I wish would be removed. However, this will take time because so many people have a bad stereotype for immigrants.
While immigration for our country is good, the ability to become a legal citizen has become insanely hard, therefore leading immigrants to illegally cross our border, which negatively impacts our country. Immigration is positive for our country’s economy, although illegal immigration is negatively impacting our country. Resolved to join the American way of life, a large number of outsiders have ventured to this extraordinary land to have an existence based upon “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” Determined to join the American lifestyle, thousands of immigrants have journeyed to this great land to have a life based upon “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” This country’s backbone is immigration and it started when this country was made.
