Speech from a Native American point of view Good afternoon my friends, Today, I am here to open your eyes to what is happening. I am here to warn you on the terrible future that waits for us if we do not try to do something. When white settlers came to our land, their horrifying actions had an immediate effect in our lives. We have been living on these lands for centuries now, and they tried to destroy our lives. We have been depending on buffalo for food, clothing, and shelter. Yet, they did not respect our lives, they did not respect our culture and traditions. They killed so many buffalo for their selfish reasons. Yet, this was not enough for them. Yet, then they did not respect our culture. They did not show any respect to our traditions. In fact at Wounded Knee, they took one of our important rituals, “Ghost Dance”, as a call for war, and they tried to fight us again. The army sent by the US government, killed Sitting Bull. As if this was not enough, at Wounded Knee Creek, the soldiers ended up killing 150 Native Americans, and most of these Native Americans were unharmed. Nothing seemed enough for them, they even tried to “Americanize” us. If we have been living on these lands for years, then how could they dare to try to “Americanize” the Native Americans? All they wanted was to make us be like them, and they called this “Americanization”. How could they pass a law like the Dawes Act to force assimilation of us? How can they try to break our tribes? The white settlers were so greedy, and they caused so much pain for us. They lacked the respect for our past, our land, our families and for our culture. That’s why we cannot forgive them for what they have done. We need to realize how much we have been hurt and consider this pain when we are taking any
