Introduction:
John is a Hispanic 7th grader who has an emotional and behavioral disorder. His test scores reveal he qualifies for the gifted program at his school for ELA only. He will stay in the inclusion classroom for his other classes where he is very successful. John is the only Hispanic student in the gifted class, which makes him uncomfortable. The gifted teacher has never worked with a student on an Individualized Education Programs (IEP). She also does not include him in the classroom discussions and tends to speak abruptly to him, which she does not do with the other students. John was found isolated in a corner by the school principal and the teacher was not interacting with him. His teacher feels he should have a paraeducator, however, the IEP team feels he would be successful without one. John’s parents have notified the principal that the teacher informed John he does not belong in the gifted class.

The special education teacher should meet with John to discuss his options and to hear his feedback. The special education teacher can seek more information about how John is feeling and gain an understanding of how the class is managed. His special education teacher will listen to what John has to say while showing him support. Once John feels comfortable, as a team, he and his special education teacher can develop class expectations for him to follow. The gifted teacher should also be included in the conversation. Therefore, she can discuss the class expectations and assign a peer to be his buddy during class.
