It is difficult to challenge societal structures that have been put in place for many years. Change can be seen negatively and is hard to grasp for people. This causes people who want to make an impact to have to take unique approaches to advocate for change. Sor Juana’s “Response of the Poet to Sor Filotea de la Cruz” and Redondilla 92 both advocate for change in societal norms and explore adjustments to support the growth. The “Response of the Poet to Sor Filotea de la Cruz” questions the women’s education and role in the Catholic Church. In Redondilla, 92, she challenges the double standard society puts on women. This encourages women to act in a revolutionary way to change the patriarchal views and create an equal society. Sor Juana provides radical thoughts in both texts and uses different perspectives to further her argument against the patriarchal society and advocate for women’s rights. In “Response of the Poet to Sor Filotea de la Cruz” she explains the personal struggles she has as a woman in society when you are expected to be married or join a convent. Sor Juana realized, “the first (and in the end the most important) obstacle to overcome was to relinquish all the minor defects in my character, such as wanting to live alone, and not wanting any obligatory occupation that would limit my studies.” (Sor Juana 97). Societal standards make women think that normal feelings that a man feels are not allowed for women, for no reason. She has been pushed down by not only men, but other women to believe that she is not worthy of wanting basic opportunities that are provided for men.
