In the novel, Sons and Lovers, by D.H. Lawrence, the protagonist, Paul Morel, represented the epitome of the phrase “mama’s boy.” Mrs. Morel was very demanding, and smothered Paul to the point where he felt it was wrong to love anyone else but her. Paul’s disturbing infatuation with his mother became an obstacle in what could have blossomed into successful relationships with two very important women in his life, Miriam and Clara.
In Chapter 7, Paul shows a yearning for some connection beyond what he shares with his mother. In his free time, Paul is a painter, and he still needs his mother to do his best work, as he tells her. But Miriam allows him to take his work to another level. She makes him feel an intensity he has never before experienced. Miriam seems to have a sense of this connection. She was probably Paul’s most suited candidate as his wife. He knew her and her family for years, talked and visited her frequently, and eventually fell for her. He could not love Miriam completely because his mother did not approve of her. The connection between Paul and Miriam may be one reason that Mrs. Morel dislikes Miriam. "She could feel Paul being drawn away by the girl"(168). She seems to view Miriam as direct competition for her son's love and attention. Mrs. Morel felt that Miriam was the type of woman who would suck the soul out of a man.
She’s not like an ordinary woman, who can leave me my share of him. She wants to absorb him. She wants to draw him out and absor...

No matter what actions or words a mother chooses, to a child his or her mother is on the highest pedestal. A mother is very important to a child because of the nourishing and love the child receives from his or her mother but not every child experiences the mother’s love or even having a mother. Bragg’s mother’s flaw was always taking back her drunken husband and thinking that he could have changed since the last time he...
At a birds eye glance into the film Au Revoir Les Enfants, it is seen to be within the world war 2 ridden time period of 1944. Further more, the film follows Louis Malle's recounts of his childhood memories, while staying at a Roman Catholic boarding school. The memories explicated though the directors lens, are rather somber and lethargic. For instance, the scene shown between the main characters, Julien Quentin and Jean Bonnet in the eery and desolate woods of Fontainebleau show the harsh cold and foggy elements that cloud sunlight and liberation, and place a perpetual dreary and dark winter. Thus effecting the actions and moods of the children and teachers of the school. Specifically, the war and winter vastly

... and their love for their sons, no matter what kind of love it may be. The father-son relationship is enhanced in these works by the absence of mothers, who had either passed on or were not very essential to the plot of the work. Through these works, the importance of a father-son relationship can truly be shown.
Women throughout time have been forced to cope with the challenges of motherhood along with society’s expectations as to what a mother’s relationship should be with her child. Novelist, Agatha Christie said of the relationship between mother and child, “A mother’s love for her child is like nothing else in the world. It knows no law, no pity, it dares all things and crushes down remorselessly all that stands in its path.” In Beloved, Toni Morrison examines the same idea; ultimately showing that the mother’s willingness to protect her child at all costs often endangers the mother herself. Beloved is set in the late 1800’s but Sethe’s experiences as a mother ring true with the experiences of mothers throughout time because the act of being a mother is timeless. As a child Sethe was separated from her mother both physically and mentally because of slavery, so when she has her own children she is determined to keep her family together. In her attempt to free herself and her children from slavery Sethe finds herself separated from her daughter, Beloved as a result of Beloved’s death. When Beloved returns, Sethe’s guilt causes her to overcompensate for their lost time. Her attempts to make up for this lost time with Beloved lead her to become too dependent on her children’s happiness and to abandon any of her own pursuits in favor of ensuring that her children are content. She gives her children everything she has, but is eventually sucked dry with nothing left to give. This struggle is similar to the struggle of modern women who must leave their children while they work then try to make up for the lost time when they are home. From the time they are girls women are led to believe that more important than their happiness, is their respo...
A relationship between a mother and son should be one that is full of unconditional love. The mother should be able to provide for the son and in return the son should look to the mother for comfort and stability. In D.H. Lawrence's, "The Rocking-Horse Winner," the relationship between the protagonist, Paul and his mother is not ideal at all.
Due to these insecurities, the men commit actions that make the female characters the victims. Miriam is in love with Paul and committed to him, despite this, she ends up heartbroken. “He felt, in leaving her, he was defrauding her of life. But he knew that, in staying, stifling the inner, desperate man, he was denying his own life. And he did not hope to give life to her by denying his own.” (Lawrence, 136). Paul has to decide between his happiness and Miriam’s. In the end, Paul chooses to ruin her life rather than his own. This decision is driven by his need to feel masculine as he thinks that Miriam is depriving him of this. Feeling emasculated is his insecurity and because Paul feels insecure he thinks that hurting Miriam is justified.
A guilty feeling surged through me as I snuck out of church early, but I could not wait any longer to show my friend, Jonathan, my new Chevrolet Cavalier. As I raced out of the parking lot, I heard ambulance sirens in the distance, and I felt a weird feeling in the pit of my stomach as if butterflies were fluttering around trying to get out. I paid the feeling no mind as I merged onto the interstate at Gray and headed toward Johnson City. Little did I know those sirens would change my life forever.
The Tale of Two Sons and the Story of Sayaka Miki are both very distinctly differing accounts, yet both have a similar outcome. The two accounts share an identical moral: be careful what you wish for. Brothers: Tale of Two Sons -a game made by Starbreeze Studios- is about two brothers, Naia and Naiee, who journey far into their setting encountering trolls, giants, and even an owl griffin to scour for the tree of life to cure their lethally ill father. The brothers mother had drowned after falling out of a boat sometime before, leaving Naiee traumatized and developing a phobia of water.

How can a simple six letter word be so complicated to define? Family is a single word that is open to many interpretations depending on the individual. If you try to condense this ideal to a single clinical definition you end up excluding numerous members of society. What comes to mind when you think of the word family? While in the most broken down and literal sense, family means a relative with a blood or legal bond, the word family can encompass blood relations, adoptions, and even intentional relationships such as friendships. Economies, cultures, and backgrounds can further differentiate what one’s perception of a family is. For many people, including me, a family is so much more. It is the amount of commitment, cohesiveness, and importance
