William Shakespeare is well-known for his multiple works of literature. These famous works include his many sonnets that consist of three quatrains and a concluding couplet. Specifically, in “Sonnet 29,” the speaker is disgruntled with his life and lusts for a more favorable one. However, although the speaker does not embody all the characteristics he would like, when he thinks of a loved one, life becomes significant again. In his “Sonnet 29,” Shakespeare integrates various literary devices that highlight that happiness entails both economic and spiritual satisfaction. However, in addition to simply describing his sorrows, the speaker begins to wish for other aspects of life he does not already have. Ultimately, this quatrain reveals that the speaker is made more self-conscious by comparing his life to that of others. For example, the speaker wishes to become popular in that he wants to be surrounded by many friends. The repetition when the speaker reveals his want for popularity is noteworthy, because it creates a pause midline before he further elaborates, emphasizing his desire to be like someone else. In addition, he states he wants “this man’s art, and that man’s scope,” conveying he is not satisfied with the materials already provided to him in life (7). However, it is significant that the speaker is not simply wishing for only materialistic items. While the speaker desires to have another man’s ability to create art and another man’s perspective on life, he ultimately craves to be “rich in hope” (5). Since not all of these characteristics are tangible, Shakespeare illustrates that not only materialistic items equate to happiness. At the end of this quatrain, a shift is marked by a semicolon before continuing on to the final quatrain. This semicolon signals a shift by ending the speaker’s thoughts on what he would like to have and switching to appreciating what he does

There is something about the human spirit that causes us to rejoice in shared experience. We can connect on a deep level with our fellow man when we believe that somehow someone else understands us as they relate their own joys and hardships; and perhaps nowhere better is this relationship expressed than in that of the poet and his reader. For the current assignment I had the privilege (and challenge) of writing an imitation of William Shakespeare’s "Sonnet 87". This poem touched a place in my heart because I have actually given this sonnet to someone before as it then communicated my thoughts and feelings far better than I could. For this reason, Sonnet 87 was an easy choice for this project, although not quite so easy an undertaking as I endeavored to match Shakespeare’s structure and bring out his themes through similar word choice.

When he writes "And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare as any she, belied with false compare." (lines 13-14) in the final couplet, one responds with an enlightened appreciation, making them understand Shakespeare's message that true love consists of something deeper than physical beauty. Shakespeare expresses his ideas in a wonderful fashion. Not only does he express himself through direct interpretation of his sonnet, but also through the levels at which he styled and produced it. One cannot help but appreciate his message of true love over lust, along with his creative criticism of Petrarchan sonnets.
Due to the great amount of Shakespeare's work and its consistent quality, his particular style became known as 'the Shakespearean sonnet form'. A typical Shakespearean sonnet has fourteen lines, broken down into three quatrains and ending with a rhyming couplet. In each quatrain a different subject will be conversed and described, the subject is then changed at the start of each new quatrain. The quatrain allows the theme of the sonnet to be developed. The ending couplet allows what was discussed in the forerunning quatrains to be resolved.
The sonnet opens with the speaker he has become disgraced and outcast. At this time he is poor and without many friends. He speaks of how he curses his fate and about his jealousy of other men. At the end, he talks about his thoughts of someone bringing him happiness. He ends the poem by saying they are the reason he does not scorn to change his “state with kings.”
William Shakespeare (1564-1616) lived in a time of religious turbulence. During the Renaissance people began to move away from the Church. Authors began to focus on the morals of the individual and on less lofty ideals than those of the Middle Ages. Shakespeare wrote one-hundred fifty-four sonnets during his lifetime. Within these sonnets he largely explored romantic love, not the love of God. In Sonnet 29 Shakespeare uses specific word choice and rhyme to show the reader that it is easy to be hopeful when life is going well, but love is always there, for rich and poor alike, even when religion fails.

This Shakespearean sonnet consisting of 14 lines can be subdivided into 3 parts. In each part, the poet uses a different voice.
