In “Sonnet 24”, from the Portuguese, Elizabeth Barrett Browning compares the negative attitudes of others to a “clasping knife” that she will simply close up to rid her love of danger and damage. In this particular sonnet, Elizabeth uses the Petrarchan sonnet form, which has two quatrains and two tercets. The figurative language that is presented in this sonnet includes her usage of similes, metaphors, personification, and alliterations. This sonnet is in iambic pentameter and some of the sound devices that are used include alliterations and rhymes. The tone and mood throughout the sonnet is written sincerely and depicts the feelings of security and reassurance. Elizabeth’s strategy resembles the metaphysical poet’s use of the strange conceit as she compares the world’s harshness to a “clasping knife”.
