In Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison, Milkman lives in early nineteen hundreds a time of great racism were there are few that have individual freedom and economic. Though Milkman has economic freedom he now desires to gain his own freedom from his father and mother, Macon Sr and Ruth. For many years, Milkman’s parents controlled his childhood and he slowly became more like them. As time passes Milkman becomes dependent on his father for a job. His father is not free and has no community because of his deep economic ruthlessness towards others. This leads to Milkman wanting to find his own community and an identity of his own. In this life she is one with her community. Milkman began to notices “That she tackled the problem of trying to decide how she wanted to live and what was valuable to her. When am I happy and when am I sad what is the difference? What do I need to know to stay alive? What is true in the world?”(149) Milkman is now just starting to realize he has lived his life in the wrong way. He has lived a life of sadness just like his parents have for so many years. However now is starting to see that one needs to be happy by living a true life. Milkman now sees that a life where a person knows their family history and the people around them is a happy life. Pilate also able to be merciful to others, she has a “alien’s compassion for troubled people ripened her and the consequence of the knowledge she has made up or acquired kept her just barely within the boundaries of the elaborately socialized world of black people.”(149) That is how one becomes a part of their community through being good to others who need it. Macon Sr is totally devoid of all these ideals and just now Milkman is beginning to find these ideals. In his journey each of these ideals will begin to unearth themselves until now Milkman is free and can live a life as Pilate so wonderfully
