Baumfrees were separated after the death of Charles Hardenbergh in 1806. Sojourner Truth, better known as Isabella, was sold at an auction with a flock of sheep for $100 when she was 9 years old. The man she was sold name was John Neely, she remember him as a harsh and violent person. Over the next two years, Truth would be sold two more times, finally coming to reside on the property of John Dumont at West Park, New York. During these years Truth learned to speak English for the first time. She moved to New York City, worked as a domestic, became involved in moral reform, embraced evangelical religion, started her street-corner preaching career, and eventually joined a utopian community in Sing Sing, New York.     Isabella Baumfree was born in 1797 in Ulster County, New York (Women in History). Isabella became widely known as Sojourner Truth. Sojourner’s parents, Elizabeth and James Baumfree were slaves. Her childhood was spent under the watchful eyes of abusive masters. Her primary language during her childhood was Dutch. At age nine, Sojourner was sold to John Neely. It was in this abusive situation that she turned to religion. Religion was her “refuge”. Sojourner Truth had at least five children between 1815 and 1827. Truth was sold several times and was finally purchased by Isaac and Maria Van Wagenen in New York State. The Van Wagenen’s gave Sojourner her freedom in 1827.
