SOCIOLOGY OF INDIA APPROACH AND PERSPECTIVE
Sociology is the product of the intellectual response of the Indians to the western interpretation of Indians to the Western interpretation of Indian society and culture mainly after the beginning of British colonial rule in India. The early sociological beginning can be started from Karl Marx, Max Weber as well as Durkheim who depend on the British writing on India for analysis of Indian society and culture. Intensive field work and the first monograph on a people of India in modern anthropological tradition was done by W.H.R.Rivers on the todas, after him two of his students G.S.Ghurye and K.P.Chotapadhyay play an important role in the development of sociology and …show more content…

Ghuyre wrote a paper which was which include ethnic theory of caste and this provide the basis of his book caste and race in India. Ghuyre’s interest as well as method was catholic in nature. He also denies making distinction between social anthropology and sociology. In analyzing and interpreting Indian culture and society because of his knowledge of Sanskrit which enables him to use the scripture and epics of the Indian society. He founded the Indian sociological society in 1952. He is also acclaimed as father of Indian sociology. Ghuyre relied on the empirical and textual method for studying Indian society. The Indian culture and social structure which was based on Sanskrit literature was what Ghuyre ideological approached hovers around. He was often said to rely on indigenous Indology as he was more influence by the Indologists of Bhandarkan Institute of Bombay rather than the British writing done by William Jones. Ghuyre feel that the sociology of India is not static as it originate from from the ancient India and travel through medival India and reached modern India His writing and works such as The few broad areas that have been identified in Ghurye’s writings are; Caste, Tribe, Kinship, Culture and Civilization, Religion, Sociology of Conflict and Integration, Family and Marriage.The various writings of Ghurye include: Caste and Race in India (1932),Indian Sadhus (1953),Bharatnatyam and its costume (1958),Family and Kinship in Indo-European culture (1955),Social tensions in India (1968) made a great contribution in the sociology of India. Ghuyre was also influenced by the reality of diffusionist approach of the British social anthropology and also switched the studies of Indian society from Indological to anthropological perspective.
