Introduction As I sketch my sociological portrait, I find myself first looking at the multiple statuses I hold in society and how each came about. I am not only a father to an young adult, but a son, a brother, a friend to many, a neighbor, a student once again and a blue-collar worker. Each of these statuses developed during various times in my life, and requires me to take on, at times, numerous roles. These statuses have defined who I have become and the impacts I have on society. My sociological portrait will be based on the social institution of family. My family has been the most influential in molding who I have become. These reference groups helped shape us by providing us the means of how to behave in group settings in the proper manner, communication among people from all social classes, and gave us the ability to identify other social norms. My friends and their families taught me soft skills that I had not been exposed to within my family. “Soft skills are the character traits and difficult to teach interpersonal skills that characterize a person’s relations with other people. Soft skills have more to do with who we are than what we know. As such, soft skills encompass the character traits that decide how well one interacts with others, and are usually a definite part of one 's personality (www.investopedia.com).” “Soft skills are things like knowing how to dress, act and present oneself or the ability to work well with other people (Manza Pg. 417).” For example, I learned proper table etiquette such as not starting to eat before everyone was served. This was not something that was taught at my home. I learned proper clothing attire based on the occasion and or different adult surrounding. The benefits of these soft skills became invaluable later and into adulthood by helping me in the real world. I learned what to say and when to say it in conversational circumstances that I might have been unprepared for otherwise were now familiar to me. This allowed me to carry on conversations and
Talcott Parsons and Robert Bales, two of the leading figures in sociology, may be considered the founding fathers for the ideas of the “modern family” and the “male-breadwinner family.” Collectively, their work has influenced how Americans analyze families and has sparked new ideas regarding the American family from sociologists such as Stephanie Coontz and Arlie Hochschild. However, when studying the American family, Parsons and Bales fail to understand that the “ideal” family may not be so ideal for everyone. They neglect to consider societal influences and economic changes when discussing patriarchal social norms as the most optimal family structure. Their description of the male-breadwinner family consists of the father being the “instrumental leader” within the home, providing economically for his family based on his occupational earnings. Meanwhile, the mother is considered the manager of the household, providing for her husband and children physically, emotionally, and mentally.
Throughout time, family dynamics continually adapt to fit an always changing society. Using the sociological imagination, I can analyze my family’s history to understand the shift between Puritan farming life to the Industrial Era to the modern-day family I live in now.
Epidemiological transition theory is the idea that there are complex changes in patterns of health and disease in relation with demographic and technologic transitions. The original three phases include the age of pestilence and famine, the age of receding pandemics, and the age of degenerative and man-made diseases (Omran, 2005). The age of pestilence and famine is characterized by high mortality due to war, famine, and epidemic outbreaks (Omran, 2005). Very few countries are in this phase as average life expectancy has increased globally. However, in Africa, ongoing conflict and famine continue to plague many populations. Similar to everyone else in the world, many sociological forces have greatly impacted my life and shaped the person that I am today. Throughout Sociology 110, learning what elements in the population’s lives affect the way they live their lives allowed me to consider what has personally affected my own. The person I am today can attribute the sociological forces such my gender, my not-so close knit family, my family’s low socioeconomic status, and sexism in the family. There are plenty of other sociological factors that have considerably rendered my person, however, I believe that the ones I mentioned are the most important factors that manipulated not only how I live my life, but me as a person as well, into my current self.
In my interview I chose my girlfriend's neighbor. Hector is of Mexican decent and he is here because in Meigs county the produce fields hire Mexican laborers on worker permits. Hector started out doing this then he became the boss about five years ago and received his green card and now is an American and can speak very good English. He explained to me that in Mexico there is no age when you can start working so there are young boys working at six to ten years old to help support his needy family. He also stated that women do not usually work they are only aloud to go to the village markets and get goods for their family's and raise there many children. I asked about minimum wage and he kinda laughed and said some teens and men who work are lucky to get a dollar an hour, but he said the people who are lucky enough to get to do what he got to do make there family's a lot of money. He said when he started coming to America to work he was picked like a lottery pick because there are only so many jobs for little positions he and his entire family was dirt poor, but now he said his family is the richest in the village. He said that he has also got to move all of his immediate family to America.
With a sociological approach for education, a teacher is able maintain a holistic view of their role as a teacher and the connections between the classroom and their participants. This theory can be learned, then similar to the learning of morals, cannot be unlearned. For the teacher’s lens, sociology acts the zoom mechanism for macro to micro perspectives of the influences on the classroom. While applying this theory teacher are able to adjust and adapt culturally responsive teaching with an increased understanding of their teacher identity, a more informed understanding of their community, and a critical perspective of curriculum. From the moment I was born I was given a status, I had no say in whether I wanted it or not and along the way; growing up I was given the option to become others. There are two types of statuses that I am currently have an ascribed and achieved status. Growing as a Hmong daughter and a student is hard. Having the title Hmong daughter was ascribed to me and the title student was achieved by me. Living with these two statuses, sometimes they are difficult, but someday I hope together they will take me to a much better place, a higher social class than where I am currently.
The generation that a person has grown up in can offer perception into the impact society has on that person’s well being, thoughts, and reality. This is contributed into what C. Wright Mills called “Sociological Imagination”. Sociological Imagination is the ability to see the world from the perspective of society, moving away from the individual's personal problems, and focusing on social circumstances that produce social problems. In other words, it is when people are able to see the connection between individual experiences and the larger society. For example, when one person is unemployed it’s considered a “private trouble”, but if many people are unemployed then it’s considered a “ public issue”. Depending when and where someone grew up, their sociological imagination can differ from anyone that grew up somewhere else or in a different generation. For this project, I had to interview somebody who is sixty-five or older who has lived in the United States for most of their life and see how their life was and how the generation they grew up in shaped their sociological perspective. For academic and activist Casey Walden, the interest in sociology developed as a kind of gradual awakening. Casey prefers pronouns she/her/hers or they/them/theirs, however, in this paper I will be utilizing only she/her/hers. Casey is a twenty-year-old student at Simmons College, pursuing the study of sociology amongst other concentrations. An interview session with her allowed me to delve into the intricacies of the interview process by analyzing how the conversation progressed, and to explore more about why she is majoring in sociology. In this paper, I will aim to discuss salient points that were mentioned throughout the interview, as well as reflect on the experience of conducting one. Throughout the fluid process of directing the interview, I was able to gage Casey's demographic background, motives, and aspirations regarding her major in sociology.
Social problems exist all around us and are part of our everyday routine, we may not always see them but they are always there. It could simply be someone losing there job, a female not getting hired over a male, a male expecting a female to clean up a mess or an older adult being fired for not being fast enough, most individuals don’t think anything of it, its just a way of everyday life and we have seen it time and time again. Individuals look at issues in a narrow minded egotistical kind of way by just focusing on themselves and the cause and effect of their own personal issues. Poor me, I’m unemployed because my car broke down and I couldn’t get to work, my boss fired me and now I don’t have a job and cant fix my car. An experience from my life that I shall analyze using a sociological lens started in elementary school, which I attended after my two eldest sisters had begun a few years before me. I started to be noticed by numerous teachers as their sibling. My oldest sisters both did a notable job in school, achieving strikingly high grades and a well-known acknowledgment for their excellent behaviour. Consequently, my teachers all had established high expectations for me to reach up till grade eight. These set outlooks about how I was to perform successfully was an effective motivator. Accordingly, helping me develop correct behaviours, studying habits and skills appropriate for becoming an achiever which contributed to my high marks. However, these expectations of me took a sudden turn during my grade nine math course after being discouraged for receiving a low graded math test. The conversation that followed between my teacher and I, plus the way they were acting towards me overall gave the clear impression that they thought I would never improve. This had an immense impact on me, losing motivation I passed with a low final grade.
C. Wright Mills theory of sociological imagination is the one sociological principle that has resonated with me more than any other theory in Sociology with Marxism being a close second. Even before taking any classes in the humanities or social science fields, I unknowingly used sociological imagination framework in my life on almost a daily basis. Since becoming aware of political matters in grade school through music, race and class, I began to critically analyze connections of public policies that affect my enviroment.
