Doing what you want to do is more important than doing what other people want. Societal influences is something in society that can effect your opinions on something. There are a lot of societal influences that surround sports and sports players. These social influences can effect people in positive and negative ways. The three societal influences that I am studying are media, family and popular views. Firstly media is focused the media coverage that different sports and sports gear gets. Next family is focused on how your family effects your participation in certain sports and finally popular views Which is focused on how the popular views of others effects your decisions around sports. For this report I interviewed 3 people of different …show more content…
This societal influence can have positive and negative effects on your decisions surrounding sports. This societal influence is focused on how media such as Facebook, television ads and other online sites can effect the decision of an individual around sports, for example if someone sees a person playing a sport on television they might want to give that sport a try. My sister in a 18 year old that has been playing sports nearly her whole live and she is connected to all of the social media sites and watches television regularly. A negative influence the societal influence of media has influenced my sister on is influencing her to by a pair if sports shoes that were very expensive but that were uncomfortable when she plays basketball her chosen sport. She saw an ad for the Kobe 10 basketball shoes and wanted to get them. So she went out and purchased a pair. However the pair of shoes were very uncomfortable to wear and she had to play around with them a lot. The implications of this is that she had to sometimes stop and fix her shoes mid game and it could cost her team points or even get herself benched because she was being a burden for the team. Just buy seeing an ad on a pair of shoes the consequences made her play worse with them in and effect the team. It shows that she takes notice of ads and shows because when I asked her if she did take notice of them and why she said " yes I take notice of the ads because I want to keep up to date with the new products that are being realised". A positive influence media had on her was that by seeing all of the professionals play in the NBA it made her motivated to be better and someday be as good as them. It showed this when she said "I get motivated by all of the amazing players that play in the NBA and I want to be like them one day," after I asked what she thought of the professional sportspeople on television. The implications of this is

To deepen our understanding of the cultural values embedded in sports and to explore current values and power structures regarding men and women, it is necessary to investigate the effect that the media may possibly have in influencing beliefs about gender-appropriate sport behavior. The media is a powerful factor which influences our beliefs, attitudes, and the values we have of ourselves and others as well as the world surrounding us. It seems that the televised coverage of athletics continues to reinforce the ongoing division between males and females, and to reproduce traditional expectations regarding femininity and masculinity.
The media and technology have impacted a huge part on the way people view sports. Technology hasn’t only transformed the way of interacting with sports from the past ten to fifteen years. Not only has techn...
Sports are a popular pastime among all ages and types of people. People not only participate in them for fun, but also for money, physical fitness, rush of competition, and for many other personal reasons. Playing sports is especially common among young people in schools. Athletics are great and enjoyable for many reasons, but there can be a point where sports participation can go too far and become negative for children and adults. Sports specialization for young people is an increasing trend that results in sports having a negative impact on individuals and society.
Media plays a large role in affecting peoples thinking, opinions, ideas, etc. In essence media can shape our thinking into negative views and perspectives that are typically not true. Sometimes the media plays as a puppet master to society. Specifically, the inequity of the gender roles within sports causes for a stir in commotion that calls for some attention. In doing so the inadequate misuse of media towards women in sports causes low exposure, amongst many other things. On the other hand their male counterparts are on the other end of the success spectrum. Because of this noticeable difference, it is vital that action is taken place to level out equality within sports. Due to the power of media, it is believed that a change in media coverage
Literature has shown there is a constructive correlation between an individuals socioeconomic status (SES) and their participation in sporting activities. This piece of writing will be defining the impact social class division has on the opportunities for an individual to participate in sport and leisure activities. Also the key aspects of the social class system within the United Kingdom, from the traditional methods of social stratification, to the modern 7 class system released in 2013 by the British Broadcast Corporation (BBC). The term 'Social Class' or 'Socioeconomic Groups' , refer to an individuals status within society. There are various factors which determine an individual's status, such as; income, family background and educational experiences. This socioeconomic status can be seen as a status hierarchy in which three main common social classes are informally accepted in the majority of societies: Upper Class, Middle Class and Working Class (Wesson et al, 2000).
American society has been affected over the years due to many people and laws. Athletes and sports have had their share of effect on society as well. Almost three fourths of society has played or watched some kind of sporting event. Where would society be today without sports? No one will ever know, but sports and athletes have affected society in many aspects all over the nation. Sports have brought people in the American society closer together. Some states in America rely on sports to help out with their economy, but sports have also created problems for society. Also, the online surveys will be a great way to increase the population from one region to many. Sportsmen of minority affect all populations whether it be personally, politically, or economically. Therefore, it is imperative to include the points-of-view of many different individuals in both positive and negative aspects of those variables, whether it be their environment, opportunity, gender, or individual sport(s). For example, the power a minority sportsman experiences may be influenced more positively or negatively based on his/her gender in an individual sport.
One of the main studies that focus on the relationship between sport and sociology is Sport Sociology, it focuses on the effect of access and equity. As stated by Hede, C, 2011. PE. 2nd ed. Victoria: Oxford, sociology in sport is the scientific analysis of human society and culture that effects our participation in sport.
Sports can help many at- risk youths. In order to participate in sports you need to be committed and willing to work hard. You also have to learn to respect others and accept that winning isn’t the only measure of success. Losing can build character as well. When youth participate in a sports they enjoy, they are less likely to engage in behaviors that are harmful or dangerous to themselves and others. It is for these reasons schools should strive to maintain athletic programs for their students.
Sports psychology is the study of how psychology influences sports, athletic performance, exercise and physical activity. Some sports psychologists work with professional athletes and coaches to improve performance and increase motivation. Other professionals use exercise and sports to enhance people’s lives and well-being. While finding ways to help athletes is certainly an important part of sports psychology, the application of exercise and physical activity for improving the lives of non-athletes is also a major focus.
The type of sport adolescents choose to participate in can be considered masculine, feminine, or neutral which causes stereotypes among peers. Society has set the stereotypes for competitive sports based on gender. According to Alley & Hick (2005), “despite legal and social changes, sexist ideology still pervades sport” (p.273). Sports are seen as masculine, male dominated, and males receive higher media coverage and pay than the majority of female sports. The gender stereotype is learned through socialization and “for certain sports appear to be learned by grade school” (Alley & Hicks, 2005. p. 274). Gender role conflicts may appear in some athlete depending on the sport(s) one chooses to participate in, but this can alter by demonstrating acceptance for the opposite gender in sports. It is important to indentifying the social effects of sports participation in both genders and how beneficial it can be to the adolescent. Through sports participation adolescents learn those gender roles are based on self-perception, and not social interactions.

Sports may have impacted our culture much more then we thought it would, and keeps impacting. Sports have affected some of the most important aspects of life, such as jobs and money. It has also affected things as little as who we look up to and how we dress. Culture means “the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively.” The definition of sports is “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.” So when we put two and two together we get a a nation or world that has changed due to sports. Back in the mid and late 1900’s sports were used to see whose way of life was better. As time went on and keeps going on, we
The downfall of the influence that the media has on sports is that they can be bias toward situation that may arise in the sports world. There can also be too much or not enough sports coverage on at time when society needs them. Athletes often feel that they receive too much attention and can’t live their lives. A prime example is Seattle Seahawk running back Marshawn Lynch, who has publicly voiced his frustration with the media, even going as far as answering every question asked with “I’m just here, so I wont get fined” twenty-five times during Super Bowl media
