Social work is a broad profession which influences many areas of society and there are many experiences, beliefs, frustrations and hopes that have brought me to the point of starting a journey to become a social worker. From a young age my family has been a huge influence in my life. I am the oldest child with three younger siblings who have been and still are my closest friends. Growing up in a tight knit family I developed a keen desire to see children across Australia and the world included and accepted into loving homes rather than institutions. Being the oldest child, I also have a heightened sense of responsibility and have always wanted to use my life to bring some form of positive change. Although I was able to teach English and organise games and celebrations with the children, it was incredibly frustrating hearing their stories and seeing their long-term situation worsen rather than improve. Feeling powerless to affect much lasting change in their lives has been a major motivation for me to learn the skills and gain the knowledge found in this social work course. As I understand it social work is the act of individually and collectively coming alongside persons, families and communities to see them reach their fullest potential. Whilst advocating for those who experience injustice and striving for a better future for all people. Throughout my life I have met many people who have inspired me to want to do something to help rectify situations of injustice, alleviate forms of poverty and simply be there for those who are suffering and want a listening ear. My underlying belief that the world can be better in the future is what I constantly return to; it gives me motivation to work harder to see that future become a reality and I believe that social work is the path that will help me get
