Social Work in Current Events It is imperative the social worker stays up to date on current events. For this reason, the mainstream media and the internet are sources she can utilize to meet this objective. Additionally, she would not only increase their competency but also fulfill her responsibility to advocate for social justice. With any current event, she can begin to critically observe and think about social justice issues in everyday experience. The social worker identified the social issues, the population involved, the impact on the population, the resources, and strengths with the goal of enhancing the human experience and promoting social change. As a first step, the social worker reads an article from the Washington Post online. The article describes how a middle schooler committed suicide and the family is suing the school. As preliminary findings, the police testified the middle schooler was bullied by classmates at school and online. Sadly, it is too late for the parents to take preventative measures and believe the school did not do enough to stop the bullying. Bullying and cyberbullying drove the middle schooler to commit suicide and the family lost their child, creating grief and emotional distress. Regrettably, the social worker cannot directly help the middle schooler since she deceased, but when it comes to the family, these factors put them at a higher risk for illnesses, depression, and endangerment to self and others. On a micro level, the social worker’s goal is to encourage the family find their own solutions and enhance their quality of life. Therefore, the social worker would identify the family’s support systems, abilities, and talents and utilize these resources and strengths to empower the family grief appropriately, build resilience, and reach their emotional
