For social work, there are many particular attributes that are required of applicants in order to be considered suitable for the program. In fact, Columbia has listed many of these essential characteristics as requirements for applicants: such attributes include emotional maturity, altruism, empathy, professionalism, and acceptance of all individuals. From multiple life experiences through work, school, and competitive figure skating, I believe that I have acquired many of the specific traits that are needed to be successful.
For example, the ability to listen and empathize with others is an essential quality. I acquired this skill over the years, in particular during my time as a competitive figure skater. Having a strong theory of mind has

Being in a competitive skating environment for 12 years has taught me to learn how to handle pressure, as one can only become a competitive skater if he or she possesses the ability to perform under pressure. Figure skating also taught me a strong work ethic since I was required to balance schoolwork with hours of skating each week. I learned how to practice and study efficiently in order to not waste time. I have carried this skill onto my college education, with the result that I was able to graduate a year early while working two part-time positions to fund my education. This work ethic will no doubt be invaluable to social …show more content…
I had to help her find counseling for her well-being and to see what could be done to bring the offender to justice. I immediately thought of the Women’s Center on campus. Knowing that the staff would be able to offer positive support as well as to provide the resources to help send an official report of the incident, I accompanied her to the Center that morning. When I got there, I described the situation and asked what I could do after they took on the responsibility of finding my friend a counselor as well as locating the resources to filing the official report. They advised me to offer a listening ear whenever my friend needed me. During this stressful experience, I believe that my quick thinking and calm demeanor brought her to the right place for resources, and that she trusted me to help her in her time of
I have known that I wanted to go into the field of Social Work since my first year of undergraduate studies at SUNY at Fredonia. I entered SUNY at Fredonia as a major in secondary education, with a concentration in English. It was during my first semester of my freshman year that I had taken an introductory course in psychology. I realized then that I wanted to work with people, but not in the capacity as a secondary education teacher, but in a career in mental health. My professor spoke with such enthusiasm about the subject of psychology and psychopathology and soon, I found myself intrigued with these subjects. I wanted to help individuals who needed the help, especially knowing the stigma mentally illness exists in society.

Social workers are viewed by the world to be “fixers” in society. The general public sees social workers as just “people who work in child protective services”, they do not know about the other things that social workers are also involved in. I interviewed, Stuart Brewster, a therapist for children and families, he graduated from the university of Washington with a masters degree in social work.
social work - organisation, being committed, motivated, being able to work effectively with others and so on.
This essay aims to explore the characteristics that make a good quality social work assessment in child care. Martin (2010) stated that there was “no single agreed definition of social work assessment.” Coulshed and Orme (2006, p24) did not offer a formal definition but they described assessment as “…a basis for planning what needs to be done to maintain, improve or bring about change in the person, the environment or both.” According to the Maclean and Harrison (2015) good assessments must be “purposeful and timely.” This is because practitioners need to be clear about why they are carrying out assessments and what it is they wish to achieve at the end of that assessment.
I am interested in obtaining my masters degree in the field of social work because I am passionate about issues of equality and fairness, and want to be in a position to help out in this area in a constructive and meaningful way. Social workers have the ability to make direct, beneficial changes in people’s lives, often the people who need it the most. It may rarely be world-changing on a macro level, but social work, when done right, can have world changing effects, for the better, on the people it touches.
She came in to L.S.S. for assistance with food and personal hygiene items. However during the intake process I was able to assist her with appropriate programs and services that were offered within the agency, and also by referring her to additional resources in the community. Seen her crying, her expression, her feeling of gratitude and thanking me and the agency for the much need it help provided to her was very overwhelming for me. It was hard not to cry in reaction to her story. But that moment I try not to immerse myself in a client's life story or situation because I was taught that it can become emotionally exhausted for those in
I learnt that the use of words or expressions such as ‘that’s brilliant’ can be misinterpreted by some clients to mean that you agree with what they have done. I often use expressions like that in conversations. I am now aware that it can be misunderstood and would like to guard against it. We watched a Youtube video, two social workers called out to a service user flat for an initial assessment. They were refused entry by a friend because he had bad experience with social workers in the past and his child was taken away.
Being compassionate is a main aspect of who I am as a person. Not only do I care about my friends and family, but also my community and the world. Ironically, I’m shy and introverted, but that certainly doesn’t mean I don’t want to express my concern about the wellbeing of others. In order to grow as a person and expand this personal aspect, there are goals I want to accomplish. I want to make an impact in this world- even if it’s minor. My compassion has led me to choose being a social worker as my career and work for a non profit organization.
Research is a necessity when it comes to providing services. Social Workers need it to be able to determine their clients ' needs, to see what resources/services they have access to and if their client doesn 't have much access where can they get it. Research is also used to see how effective an intervention is and whether it would be a right fit for their clients. It provides social service agents with ways to identify problems within their clients, communities, organizations, and the government. Also it helps them to create ways to aid in effective change. It is very beneficial when a social worker needs to "assess the needs and resources of people in their environments, evaluate the effectiveness of social work services in meeting people
This approach has much future promise particularly in the context of economic challenges and resource constraints. Since the African continent has problems with lack of resources it is wise that countries adopt this approach and move away from the remedial one which is costly. The developmental approach is highly friendly with social work’s historical values and commitment to achieving social justice and human rights (Midgley & Conley, 2010). However, there are limitations facing the developmental approach in social work.
The origins of social work in the United States mirror an ongoing growth of ideas put together from many different cultures. While modern social work here in the states were built on Christian idea many of its concepts are in part due to the influence of the Koran and the mutual aid practices of Native Americans, the African-American community, and immigrants from all over the world.
The career of a social worker is not as attractive to many because it’s not a field where you can make a lot of money right away. I want to make good living once I enter the real world, but I also want to have a purpose in life. I have always loved to help people. I am a very nurturing person and have always been passionate about helping others. I want to be able to make a difference in my community and the lives of other people. I also want to be a social worker because I want a career where I can have some diversity. I do not want a job where I must be confined to a desk to perform my job daily. Each day will be a different challenge as a social worker. I need to be involved in a field where I will not be bored and pushed to resolve the many
My passion to become a social worker began when I was pursuing an undergraduate degree.
The social work profession is defined as “a practice-based profession and an academic discipline that promotes social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people (ISFW, ‘Global Definition of Social Work’, 2016).” The definition may be true about the profession but it is more in depth than just that. To me, the profession’s primary focus is to help others through life as much as we can while letting them make their own choices and guiding them. In society, social workers are utilized in many different nonprofit and government roles. They serve the community in many different ways from monitoring parent visits to helping people through mental illnesses. Human beings are so complex and things that happen
