Corporate Social Responsibility As a customer, if something ethically or socially wrong is done to you while shopping you would want justice right? Possibly file a lawsuit even? Well here at Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. we understand that such cases will happen and to reduce chances of ethical situations occurring the company has mapped out the standards of ethical business conduct through which all employees and shareholders must be held accounted for. Wal-Mart serves a unique and diverse group of cultures throughout the world with the mindset to help them save money, while keeping to a code of integrity and serving the community. Wal-Mart provides its customers with great value prices while providing excellent customer service, based off of the founder, Sam Walton’s, ideals of leadership through service. He established the “Three Basic Beliefs” which relate to integrity and maintaining excellent ethical conduct that the company remains committed to upholding and they are as follows: (1) respect for the individual, (2) service to our customers, (3) strive for excellence. Each company has corporate social responsibility to the public and standards of ethical business conduct that must be provided to their employees and associates. But Wal-Mart’s care for us goes beyond that simple relationship. As many of us have seen if we have been to a Wal-Mart, they hire people who normally would not be able to get a job. The company knows that by broadcasting itself as positive and helpful in nature it can increase its revenue and in turn increase the amount of assistance it provides to us the consumer. “In 2004 Wal-Mart donated over $170 million. More than 90 percent of these donations went to charities in the communities served by Wal-Mart stores.’ Even more heartfelt than this, Wal-Mart was the leader in goods based relief efforts for victims of hurricane Katrina. “Walmart’s response to the hurricane was lauded even by its critics: it donated more than $20 million worth of merchandise, including food for 100,000 meals, and it promised jobs for all of its displaced workers.” And the first supply truck to arrive at the superdome was a Wal-Mart truck.
Wal-mart is currently the world’s largest company. It has seen continuous growth and financial success since it was founded in 1962. Today it is living off of a previous reputation of solid ethical business practices that are no longer being exercised. Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-mart, was considered to be “freakishly cheap… Cost-cutting was an obsession in the Wal-mart culture… on business trips, everyone, including the boss, flew coach, and hotel rooms were always shared.” (reclaimdemocracy.org. 2006). This was only part of the reason for Sam Walton’s success.
Walmart is one of the most successful franchises of all time and continues to take fire from multiple angles, whether it’s about the costing of jobs, the wages, the health insurance, the small business destruction, or the environmental impact, but can always back itself up by negating those claims with facts that proves that it is beneficial to the community.

Through a utilitarian perspective, we can see that Wal-Mart is acts in a way to product the greatest possible balance of good over dissatisfaction for their stockholders. Wal-Mart upholds the fiduciary duties to their stockholders by not increasing wages of their employees, instead they take the sum of money and return it back to their stockholders and shareholders such as customers and suppliers. Wal-Mart creates the happiness for the amount of people who invest in the company. Ethics is about the consequences of an action and the consequence of Wal-Mart’s actions creates the greatest amount of good for the people who are the primary stockholders of the corporation.

Costco Wholesale Corporation has various key corporate social responsibility programs that effectively address the interests of its stakeholders. Both the company and the stakeholders affect each other significantly and it is necessary for Costco to make sure that its corporate social responsibility efforts address any concerns that the stakeholder’s may have. If they keep the stakeholders happy, then they can have long lasting beneficial gains from it, such as a stronger brand image and loyal customers. With that, Walmart are able to provides products that are beneficial to the environment and customers can be aware that how much impact the products they bought can do to the environment. When Walmart are able to reduce the waste products from the organization, they can cut the cost and provides lower prices for customers. The first reason why I choose an obstructionist stance is because Walmart seemed to be covering up the corruption which involved violating the US Foreign Corrupt Policies Act.

Wal-Mart makes headlines almost everyday with stories of hiring illegal immigrants, gender discrimination, low wages, and pushing smaller stores out of business. This is only one side of the story, however. Passing along the gains of its brilliant distribution system to consumers, its farsighted managers have done nothing less than democratize the American dream. Wal-Mart managers even illegally and purposefully intimidated employees who wanted to support Our Wal-Mart (Kieler, 2014). That is crazy and what is even more mind-blowing is what they said to them. “”If it were up to me, I would shoot the union”” (Kieler, 2014) and “”If it were up to me, I would put that rope around your neck”” (Kieler, 2014). This is far from Wal-Mart being ethical. This company was out of line and these statements are completely uncalled for, just like unlawfully disciplining six employees for taking part in a one day strike (Kieler, 2014).
With so many things happening to them and not finding away out of them when it happens has corrupted their reputation. It is making people think before doing now with Wal-Mart. They have had to revise their Global Statement of Ethics to communicate their ethical standards to all facilities and stakeholders. This is a way with making the right decision and doing the right thing. They have started new programs mainly to be able to satisfy their customers and provide a friendly like place.
Wal-mart has a reputation for caring for its customers, of course their employees, and for the prospective public. So Wal-Mart can be an industrial leader for the world of shoppers with an eye for lower affordable prices, company decision makers would continue it's systematic strategies that it's founder and president established years ago. Sam Walton believed in three guiding principles in his strategy planning they were to provide the customer with good value and service, to have a good relationship with its associates, and to be involved with the community.
