Some photos eye-gaze direction was direct and some the eye-gaze direction was averted. The results showed that the black faces with direct eye-gaze had a higher threatening rating than the Caucasian male faces with direct eye-gaze. For the photographs that averted eye-gaze results were the
In Brent Staples article Black Men in Public Spaces, he recalled on times that he was perceived as a mugger, rapist, or burglar on the streets because of his appearance. He began by stating that his first “victim” was a white it wealthy woman in Chicago. After she avoided him, he realized that she was frightened by his presence-- large, black and intimidating. Other incidents, which include him being mistaken for a burglar, instilled anxiety to him. He quickly began to try and change his appearance and how others perceived him by whistling while walking down the streets. Staples used these experiences to show how racial stereotypes have reluctantly changed his behavior in order to be perceived by others in a different way.

Social psychology is one of the many variations of psychology. By definition, social psychology is how humans influence each other’s way of behaving and thinking. Under social psychology, there are various ways to define human behaviour and understand why we behave in a particular manner. These approaches deal with multiple concepts such as conformity, obedience, and social influences. They help answer questions about our behaviour and actions, while also analyzing our cognitive processes in certain situations. Social experiments conducted throughout history have also led to more understanding in the aforementioned areas. With these understandings of social behaviour, society can benefit and become aware of themselves and their mentalities.
A culture’s tendency to be individualistic or collectivistic can be found at the root of
In today’s society there are many stereotypes surrounding the black community, specifically young black males. Stereotypes are not always blatantly expressed; it tends to happen subconsciously. Being born as a black male puts a target on your back before you can even make an impact on the world. Majority of these negative stereotypes come from the media, which does not always portray black males in the best light. Around the country black males are stereotyped to be violent, mischievous, disrespectful, lazy and more. Black males are seen as a threat to people of different ethnicities whether it is in the business world, interactions with law enforcement or even being in the general public. The misperceptions of black males the make it extremely difficult for us to thrive and live in modern society. Ultimately, giving us an unfair advantage simply due to the color of our skin; something of which we have no control.

An individuals culture is one of the most influential factors that will drive an individual’s responses to psychological assessment. Culture molds and shapes our values, social norms, behaviors and belief systems. Duran, Firehammer and Gonzalez (2008) recognize, “Culture is part of the soul. As human beings, we are all part of a culture and not separate from it” (p.288 ). The understanding of culture is complex and has to be extended to include how domestic and international culture vary in relation to similarities, variances and contrad...

Like any other science, psychology is concerned with theories and data. Psychologists use a wide range of research methods and techniques that allow them to gather and make sense of the data that they produce. The methods that psychologists use to research and analyse the experience and behaviours of individuals or groups are called psychological research methods. This essay will be investigating and analysing three research methods to include; experimental, observational and surveys, also, reflecting on their strengths and weaknesses of each in addition to their usefulness in the psychology field.
Social Psychologist tend to ask questions when they want to answer a question about people’s behavior. Why do people do the things they do? Social psychologists want to explain this behavior. For example, the questions, “why do we hurt each other? Why does genocide happen?” can be answered by testing a hypothesis formed from their previous knowledge. To approach this question, social psychologist can use what they have observed to create an experiment. There are many influences on aggression, such as: the physical environment, wealth inequality, social rejection, culture, and media. Social psychologists use all this information to conduct their studies to explain why people hurt others and how people can even participate in genocide.
Applied social psychologists carry a unique responsibility in that their vision of the world’s problems must be viewed through a lens of change. When an applied social psychologist sees a problem the question that arises is this a human behavior problem. Once that is determined they look to “how people think about, feel about, relate to, and influence one another” (Schneider, Gruman, & Coutts, 2012). Applied social psychology is science based so that in order to address the problem the approach must be methodical and be able to proving causality. To initiate the sequence there must “observation, theory development, deduction (hypothesis development), and hypothesis testing”
Despite the fact that humankind has identical cognitive faculties and thus capable of the same processes, each person turns out to have a different understanding and valuing of the world they currently live in courtesy of diversity in society. Such is a representation of the motto “one mind, many mentalities: universalism without the uniformity,” which is a prospective answer to the issue with cultural psychology’s claim that “there may be multiple, diverse psychologies rather than a single psychology” as discussed throughout. While it shares a similarity to other contextual psychologies with the assumption that instances as well as development of thinking and behavior could only be comprehensively analyzed upon consideration of the specific time and place they transpire in, cultural psychology made its mark with the aim to explain how culture and psyche make each other possible by looking into the cultural foundations of the individual mind along with the psychological foundations of the cultural
