The origins of Coachella date to 1993 with Pearl Jam performing at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. Pearl Jam’s concert demonstrated and legitimized the potential for larger events to be held at that venue.Almost twenty years later and the Coachella Music Festival is still flourishing with ticket sales in 2015 alone generating $84 million. Since the inaugural Coachella, it has been held every year for two consecutive weekends except 2000. In 1999, around 25,000 fans attended the festival and since then, Coachella’s attendance has steadily increased from 25,000 fans in 1999 to 125,000 fans in 2017. Without the development of certain genres of music such as EDM, Rock, and Hip-Hop Coachella might not be anywhere near as big as it is today. The current focus of the millennial generation and the Z generation is social media. Social media has become a large part of people’s lives and the impact that social media has had on Coachella is remarkable. If you google #coachella, the first search that comes up is the link to every instagram post relating to Coachella. In total there are 3.1 million posts alone on Instagram relating to Coachella. Social media has created this culture of FOMO, AKA: fear of missing out. The more posts people see on Instagram or Twitter of people at Coachella having “the best time ever” the more they want to share in the experience. No one likes checking Instagram and seeing a huge group photo of their friends without him or her in it. This social construct causes people to buy tickets to Coachella without even knowing the line-up solely because Coachella has created a social culture around the
