World War II, like many wars before it, was a time of intense change in the United States and around the world. One of the most obvious changes was the need for women to join the workforce while their husbands, sons, and fathers traveled to defend our freedom once again. Women of all ages left their homes and families throughout the days leading up to the war and during it to take up jobs in stuffy factories, hospitals, and even military vehicles and aircraft. Research shows that despite the consistent gender segregation in the workforce and daily life in the 1950’s, World War II had a direct influence on the social justice movements after the war and even today.
