Social inequalities separate the nation, causing many citizens to be mistreated for insignificant reasons. Therefore, it is important to bring awareness to the topic of social inequality and persecution, especially pertaining to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) rights, because it impacts teenagers in modern America, influences the effects authors have on readers when writing about the topic, and can be used proactively in literature to promote tolerance and acceptance. As a result, learning that LGBT rights are human rights brings the world one step closer to becoming a more tolerant population.
Someone’s gender identity or sexual orientation affects them on a greater level than what pronouns they would like to be referred to with or who they want to date. For example, anyone who is not cisgender and straight can face discrimination at school, home, work, or in public; this is especially true when talking about modern American teens.

Not only does this create a hazardous school environment, but it can also cause some students to commit suicide due to the constant harassment. In a survey recently taken, about one-third of transgender people reported being bullied by their peers or teachers. This could not only lead to mental problems but also cause these transgender students to eventually become a dropout. Moreover, “North Carolina became the first (and so far only) state to restrict where transgender people can use public bathrooms and locker rooms...” (Phillips). Even worse, “when admitting students, universities, colleges, and any school really aren't allowed to discriminate based on gender or ethnicity. But there's no law prohibiting discrimination based on a student's sexual orientation or gender identity”
In certain countries such as the U.S, people discriminate against others to a certain extent based off their gender, race, and sexuality. Butler states that “to be a body is to be given over to others even as a body is “one own,” which we must claim right of autonomy” (242). Gays and Lesbians have to be exposed to the world because some of them try to hide their identity of who they truly are because they are afraid of how others are going to look at them. There are some who just let their sexuality out in the open because they feel comfortable with whom they are as human beings and they don’t feel any different than the next person. The gender or sexuality of a human being doesn’t matter because our bodies’ will never be autonomous because it is affected by others around us. This is where humans are vulnerability to violence and aggression. In countries across the globe, violence and attack are drawn towards tran...
There is a high degree of social inequality within the United States. Of most modern industrial countries, the United Stated has some of the richest and some of the poorest people to be found. That fact is very disturbing, however, explains why much of the inequality exists in the US. In the following essay I will explain to you about the inequality in our country and why it occurs, based on the theoretical perspectives of a functionalist, conflict theorist, and social interationist.
Wealth inequality and income inequality are often mistaken as the same thing. Income inequality is the difference of yearly salary throughout the population.1 Wealth inequality is the difference of all assets within a population.2 The United States has a high degree of wealth distribution between rich and poor than any other majorly developed nation.3
In today’s world, the American still has barriers to overcome in the matter of racial equality. Whether it is being passed over for a promotion at the job or being underpaid, some people have to deal with unfair practice that would prevent someone of color or the opposite sex from having equal opportunity at the job. In 2004, Dukes vs. Wal-Mart Stores Incorporation was a civil rights class-action suite that ruled in favor of the women who worked and did not received promotions, pay and certain job assignments. This proves that some corporations ignore the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which protects workers from discrimination based on sex, race, religion or national origin.
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals people make up more than ten percent of the population; that means if you are sitting in a classroom of thirty, then more than three of those people are LGBT individuals. However, this overwhelmingly large minority group continues to be one of the least protected by the government as well as most heavily targeted by discrimination and hate crimes. Regardless of the powerful shift in public opinion concerning LGBT individuals during the last twenty years, the laws concerning hate crimes have remained invariable.
The highest earning fifth of U.S. families earned 59.1% of all income, while the richest earned 88.9% of all wealth. A big gap between the rich and poor is often associated with low social mobility, which contradicts the American ideal of equal opportunity. Levels of income inequality are higher than they have been in almost a century, the top one percent has a share of the national income of over 20 percent (Wilhelm). There are a variety of factors that influence income inequality, a few of which will be discussed in this paper. Rising income inequality is caused by differences in life expectancy, rapidly increases in the incomes of the top 5 percent, social trends, and shifts in the global economy.
There are many opportunities in America that can improve one’s wealth and power, thus leading to the mass amount of immigrants coming to American. Most immigrants that come to American usually are categorized as the lower class immigrants, but they take any opportunities to improve their economic status. In an article by Howard P. Chudacoff, it states “immigrants generally chose upward paths that led from manual labor into small proprietorships” (Chudacoff 1982: 104). This explains the reason why immigrants choose to come and stay in America. They start out small as laborers then over time they will work to own a small business. Even though immigrants gets to grow to move from the lower class to the middle class, the natives will be always
I believe that there is too much wealth and income inequality in the United States
Income inequality not only harms us fiscally, but also affects our mental and physical wellbeing; therefore, it is important to identify the right ways to control wealth distribution among people.
The United States has a pervasive issue of income inequality (Volscho & Kelly, 2012). While the wealthy few live in absurd abundance, poor hardworking individuals often cannot afford basic necessities. Such a dynamic is not only an affront to the ideals of equality of opportunity, but also may increase crime as a result of relative deprivation and lack of legitimate opportunities to achieve (Thio, 2010). This essay describes the magnitude of income inequality in the United States, reveals barriers that obscures its magnitude, and suggests a starting point from which corrective measures might develop.
The fight for full equality has gone on for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. People of color, the mentally and physically ill, and the disadvantaged have all struggled for equal rights in the face of discrimination, and for the most part, they have won. Very few people today will witness someone in a wheelchair and claim that he is less of a person than one who is able to stand. Yet, there are people all across the country, of any race, age, and manner of health, who still struggle to this day. These people are routinely beaten, alienated, and shamed due to their sexual orientation, gender identity, or any mix of both. One of the most saddening aspects of this is that much of this hateful behavior either takes place in, or is reinforced by, the K-12 school setting. Young children who were called ‘sissies’ on the playground go through puberty and receive the new nickname ‘faggot’. Hateful language is especially prevalent in the high school setting, where the word gay is now considered a synonym for stupid or unfair. Discrimination of students based on sexual orientation and gender identity affects K-12 students of all ages by enforcing shame and hatred of a natural function, and can be solved by adjustments in sexual education and individual open-mindedness.
In addition to this, there are various policies in place that strictly prohibit the discrimination of any individual based on their sexual orientation. These policies are important because it makes things such as bullying punishable by law, which ultimately protects transgender students. For example, you have the “Hate Crime” law which protects individuals from being victimized due to their race, religion, gender identity, etc. It wasn’t until 2009 that this hate crime law was extended to the transgender community. Although there has been steady progress in the protection of transgender students, we still have a long way to go. Recent studies have shown that only about 13 states possessed laws which banned any discrimination against individuals based on their gender identity.
For School they restrict and have a lot of rules for those who express being transgender like with gender neutral bathrooms or separate locker rooms for them in gym, etc. However an article on a boy who expresses himself as female said that she doesn’t want to use a gender neutral bathroom because she doesn’t want to be categorized as something other than a female. She said that “I’m a girl. I am not going to be pushed away into another bathroom.” - Bathroom Access for Transgender Teen Divides Town. Because of her action she was able to stand up for what she believes is right and also have a student body on her side as well. This is good that she decided to do something about her situation however her action will impact a lot of people around her and in her town especially parents. But she isn’t wrong to do what she did because the only genders out there are males and females and she shouldn’t use a bathroom that makes her look like she’s something else or feel different from other people. Although she may have a point however it’s logical why she’s in this situation and it’s not just because of the school rules but the people around her in school and their parents because parents will be overprotective and sensitive if a school allowed students walk into a bathroom that doesn’t match with their actual
When one hears the words “LGBT” and “Homosexuality” it often conjures up a mental picture of people fighting for their rights, which were unjustly taken away or even the social emergence of gay culture in the world in the1980s and the discovery of AIDS. However, many people do not know that the history of LGBT people stretches as far back in humanity’s history, and continues in this day and age. Nevertheless, the LGBT community today faces much discrimination and adversity. Many think the problem lies within society itself, and often enough that may be the case. Society holds preconceptions and prejudice of the LGBT community, though not always due to actual hatred of the LGBT community, but rather through lack of knowledge and poor media portrayal.
dThe treatment of the LGBT community in American society is a true social injustice. LGBT, or the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender, community has gone through many hardships whether it’s been being harassed, denied
