Over the past decade, the advancement in technology has allowed the world to become more connected than any other time period throughout history. The world has also become more economically interconnected. Meanwhile, social fragmentation has been on the rise at an alarming rate these past years. Many researchers believe that there is a strong correlation between modernization and fragmentation. A number of sociologist suggest that social fragmentation is influenced by factors such as globalization and capitalism. Social divisions in general can weaken any society. A brief glance into history shows how division among individuals based on race and class can discontent and immobilize societies. This axis refers to the what is determined or seen as proper behavior in society. Fragmentation of normative systems refers to the disappearance of a common system of values within a given society. Also, within the second axis we notice fragmentation of morality which establishes the behaviors an individual should refrain. It was found that countries of certain levels of modernity and diversity had less agreement on social and moral values. The third axis William discussed was the economic fragmentation which refers to the divide within the various structures of economic exchange within a society. Within this axis four fragmentation were identified. Fragmentation of markets which reflects the formal and informal market tendency. Fragmentation of the production process refers to the end of manufacturing and provision of services as a unified process in single locations. Fragmentation of labor markets refers to the relatively high paying skilled industrial and high-end service jobs, and low-skill service positions that often leave workers in near poverty. The fragmentation of the class system refers to discontinuity in the class system of society where people tend to be either rich or poor and the middle class has either disappeared or never actually developed. The fourth axis, the political fragmentation, refers to divisions within a country‘s political system. Fragmentation of government and fragmentation of party systems make up the fourth axis.
