Recommended: Impact of civil war
Political institutions serve as one of the integral components for the foundation of civilization. The break down of governments can rot the core of a country and cause severe global issues. Several instances of broken down political institutions, ranging from Egypt to Uganda, has lead to massive corrosion of civilizations, and has disturbed the functioning peace within many countries. The weakenging, or full on collapse of an institution can leave the country crippled, and will open up the opportunity for there to be massive corruption and greed. If a political system does not have checks and balances, and the citizens are not kept satisfied, then breakdown is investable. The corrosion of government acts as a spark for many issues, in …show more content…
When the government becomes weak, people look for others to lead them. Political transitions can sometimes unintentionally lead to civil wars. The unintended outcomes of democratic transitions can lead to massive tension between groups of people. The weakness of political intuitions provides people with the opportunity to take advantage and seize power. There has been an increasing trend in civil wars post World War Two, and this will likely continue to be an issue in the future. Civil wars have become increasing prevalent in Africa. This can specifically be seen in Rwanda between the Hooties and Tooties. The tension between the two groups can be attributed to primordalsim, but the war itself was able to take place because the government was too weak to stop it from happening. Additionally, when a country has a lack of resources, and resources are not allocated properly, groups of people will fight over them. Without government intervention, different ethnic and social groups have the ability to wage war and fight other groups in order to secure both power and
Political corruption can lead to the downfall of societies because when citizens find out, they won’t have any respect for their government/leaders because of the bad things they do. Lack of respect can cause riots/outbreaks in cities.
Political corruption is one of the significant themes in the novel “The House of the Scorpion.” Political corruption is the use of power by government officials for illegitimate private gain. Everyday political figures and governments who we rely on to protect us betray us. Whether it is by bribery, extortion, cronyism, nepotism, patronage, graft, embezzlement, criminal enterprise, drug trafficking, money laundering or human trafficking, political officials or governmental systems we look up to have dabbled in corruption here or there. However, the corrupted governments inside the novel do not differ from our everyday government such as: the American government because both governments inside and outside the novel prevent people from leaving the country, make illegal deals with people and corporations for favours and both have become a country in a state of regression.
Often countries or leaders try to put too many restrictions on their subjects or territories and then the people rebel.
Some americans say that nations hinge on each other, while others say they also compete with one another. This gives rise to rivalry, which sometimes leads to war. Some wars emerge from differentiation in race, religion and culture. Due to the evolution of technology in an accelerated pace, highly sophisticated weapons are now available for use in wars. Wars also bring about widespread destruction, disrupt communication and hamper commerce. Thus, they cause heavy financial loss and great suffering to people. The effects of wars often affect countries that are not involved in the conflict. The threat of war can pressure a nation to waste immense amounts of money on defense instead of spending on developmental works like creating roads, hospitals, schools, and much more. War can halt a countries development. Some countries try to achieve political desires by using terrorism as a weapon against other countries. Terrorism spreads fear in civilians through acts of violence like killings and hostages. This intimidation has transformed into worldwide threat.
When the population feels held down by unfair restrictions in society, religion, the economy, or the government they will try to find away to get rid of these limitations to feel equal amongst the community. Sometimes the government only worries on how the outcome will affect them in a situation and do not worry about the people’s need, which frustrates the community so they set up protest and revolts, and sometimes may even attack. In Turkey, Brazil, and Crimea all are struggling through rough times with corrupt governments. In both Crimea and Brazil the political figures are getting arrested on corrupt charges or not doing all the work that needs to be done. When government funds reveal that the money is missing from these funds because some of the cabinet members decided to take the money for their own good, it puts the community to question the
The last three decades of the twentieth century were a time of revolution, genocide, and violence. Many governments around the world are taking full control over the lives of their citizens. African and Middle Eastern countries were often controlled under European rule through indirect rule. The way that indirect rule worked was that European nations appointed an indigenous group to enforce European laws, creating chaos and turmoil within the satellite countries. The turmoil turned brother against brother and father against son.
War and Nation-Building The term ‘nation-building’ is often defined as evolution rather than revolution, though it can mean different things to different people. As that reason, nation-building refers to give assistance in the development of governmental basic structure, civil society and economics in a dysfunctional or unstable country in order to increase stability. Therefore, War, which may lead to civil or global confusion, does not promote nation-building.
Known as a period of political scandal, many politicians engaged in bribes, lies, and abuse of power to further a political, social, and often personal agenda. The typical corrupt leader "will sell his vote for a dollar [...] turns with indifference from the voice of honesty and reason [...] his unalienable right may be valuable to him for the bribe he gets out of it" (166). Such politicians are an injustice to society because as they are elected by the people, they must act towards the betterment of the people, rather than for themselves. Furthermore, those who elect this politician to office merely underestimate their political and social responsibility because they "want the feeling that their own interests are connected with those of the community, and in the weakness or absence of moral and political duty" (167). Thus, under the control of the ruthless politician and the reckless voter, the true essence of democracy is
Political power has been an issue plaguing man since the beginning of politics itself. How to gain it, how to hold it, how to properly use it, how to exploit it. Throughout time power has been exercised by those that hold it over those that do not. As with anything, problems are sure to arise. These problems call for solutions if peace is to be restored. The primary perils of political power are a strong desire to keep it, a devotion to anything other than justice, an unwillingness to stand for the right thing, and ruling in a merciless manner. The remedies of political power can be (but are not limited to) confidence that laws are just, a willingness to negotiate, the sharing of power, and staying strong in what is just and right.
In examples such as the Civil War and the Arab-Israeli conflict one group of people refuse to accept another group of people. In the Arab-Israeli conflict, both groups want control of Jerusalem but the other group of people believe it is theirs and are willing to do almost anything to gain and keep control of it. By the two populations disagreeing it is affecting everyone in the region. Also, the American Civil War has similar qualities. The southerners believe that the Black people are not real people and don’t deserve rights like white people do.
Weak and failed states share many common characteristics. One of the most common features of a weak state is the presence of persistent violence. This violence is in the form of civil wars and civil unrest, this is an indicator that a government has lost legitimacy as well as control over some parts of territory. Other features include a weak bureaucracy that is very susceptible to corruption especially corruption from non-state actors such as terrorists and warlords. As the government’s power and influence continues to decline, citizens turn to these non-s...
Another factor that causes civil war is the opportunity for ethnic groups to rebel. In order to make to rebel against the state in a feasible way, ethnic groups require following three things that include a base of support, money and supplies, and a weak central government. Ethnic groups or individuals that are challenging the state need to have support. The support can be obtained by having a leader recruit soldiers willing to fight against the state for the interest of the movement of the group. The recruited soldiers provide a safe sheltered place for the rebels or ethnic group can use to operate and leaders can avoid being captured. The leader who recruits the soldiers usually has a strong social network that helps the ethnic groups to have a stronger support base to fight against the state. Usually, those in the same ethnic group or those who has been recruited speak the same language, which leads to trust and accountability, which in turn leads to fewer
The stability of the state is based upon the foundation of the government. Shaky foundations lead to short-lived or miserable nations. Governments based upon religion, birthrights, or one man generally do not have solid foundations. The greatest foundation a government can have is the support of its citizens. Governments which cater to their citizen’s will and needs receive their support. This is the basis of the social contract. When a population feels that their needs are being met, they feel they must honor their social contract. Honoring this contract may be paying taxes, supporting the military, voting, performing community service, or anything the government requires of its citizen. The opposite is true for when the government fails to meet these needs. Historically, in the absence of a stable government, citizens initially begin to stop supporting the government, start calling for a new government, and eventually revolt. A current example of this is the ongoing situation in Libya. Because the current government there, headed by Muammar Gaddafi, has placed the welfare and will of its citizens below that of the politicians that run the country, unrest amongst the citizens has paved the way to calls for democracy, a type of government in which the people are given a voice. Since these calls have gone unanswered, the situati...
The American Political System The American political system is a federal system, which consists of
Any system in the world or the world as a whole is either in a state of hierarchy or anarchy. It is believed by realists that hierarchy will maintain the peace because it is in the interest of the people running it. However, anarchy may trigger war to occur. Following with the first deduction, any structural anarchy balance of power will to some extent be a balance of conflict. There will always be clashes among units or states over power maximization and/or resource scarcity. Every state will make an attempt to maximize its power to the limits of its ability. They do this in order to gain access to the resources that are critical to the security in a given system. Resources such as cyber information, territory, economic resources, army, navy, etc. With the creation of a competitive situation, instability and war can be the outcome of this conflict. Every state tries to expand its power by expanding its resources. However, resource scarcity makes the attempt of resource expansion unattainable. Any decision maker should take into account the possibility that even a stable balance of power can turn
