Therefore, regardless of the fact that it is associated with negative aspects, it plays quite crucial roles in the social setting. In trying to understand social categorization, one can approach this issue from a point of object classification (Wann, 2006). For example, in an office setting, a pile of paper without any form of sorting is tedious. This is arguably substantial on the basis that finding one of the files may be hectic; mostly because they do not conform to any form of categorization. The same case replicates in people’s social interaction, by approaching individuals based on personal characters, it might prove to be hard since characteristic traits vary from one individual to the other (Zaglia, 2013). However, through some social categorization, the irrefutable fact is that the people have better chances to interact with others since they can start from the more general perspective and this will help narrow down to more specific details (Hogg, 2014). As of this analysis, it is debated that social categorization is not typically a cognitive, social behavior, but one that helps people in the reservation of resources, in this context it is attention and memory (Smith, 2014). Further, into this approach, the reason for approaching people based on their social class is easier, and this is known as perpetual salience. Personality is patterns of thinking, behavior and emotional responses that make up individuality over time. Psychologist attempt to understand how personality develops and its impact on how we behave. Several theories attempt to explain personality, using different approaches. It is a common saying that one’s company has a strong impact on one’s personality, for it can have a huge influence over how one thinks, feels, or perhaps behaves. Therefore, the culture that one hangs out in becomes one’s persona. Along those sixteen years, I have bumped into many people, many friends, and many influential personalities, thus I can tell for a fact that I have learned something from each human being. Merely, I have analyzed them later as having a negative or positive impact on me. Taking two cousins an example, I have not interacted with them much due to our geographical location difference, however, the time we spent together was enough to determine the aura they constructed with their presence.
Theoretical perspectives in the study of human behavior can easily be applied to cases in social work practice. The mental health field in particular lends itself to the application of different human behavior theories. Specifically, depression can be viewed through the lens of Social Cognitive Theory, or Social Cognitive Learning. There is one case of a woman with depression, whose name will be changed, that social cognitive theory can be applied to. Cheryl is a 58 year old woman who has been diagnosed with Major depressive disorder. She has had this diagnosis since she was 17 years old. Many of her symptoms and experiences can be viewed or explained in terms of social cognitive theory.
The social cognitive learning theory focuses on learning in a social setting. Observing the behavior of others develops individual philosophy, proficiency, policy, and procedures. By observing proper conduct modeled by others, individuals apply personal principles to their actions in an effort to achieve desired results (Schunk, 1996, p. 102). Applying the social cognitive learning theory to my personal beliefs requires me to reflect upon the many mentors, leaders, peers, and family members whose conduct inspired me to be who I am.
