Athletics have drawn people together since the first Olympics in ancient Greece. Athletics have the ability to break through language barriers. With over 265 million registered players worldwide, nearly four percent of the world population, and over three billion viewers soccer is clearly the sport most capable of breaking barriers. Since 1930, the FIFA World Cup of Soccer has taken place every four years bringing together 222 Countries from six continents, and billions of viewers worldwide. (BBC) However, the Future of not just the 2018 and 2022 Russia and Qatar World Cups is at stake, but all future games as well. Now drawing attention after the arrests of nine FIFA Officials at a hotel in Zurich, Switzerland. The nine arrested officials …show more content…
Each of the accused have held executive positions in FIFA, some have been previously forced to step down due to questionable ethics in the past. Sepp Blatter now former FIFA President after resigning just days after his May 2015 re-election “maintains that he was not involved in any alleged wrong doing” and that he is “pleased to see that the investigation is being energetically pursued for the good of soccer (football) and believe that it will help to reinforce the measures that FIFA has already taken” (Foss). However many are skeptical that Blatter is truly innocent when nearly every single one of his colleges have either been arrested or have resigned following previous investigations. Because of the widespread corruption in top levels of FIFA, the leaders of each country should rebuild the organization from the bottom …show more content…
Conti focuses largely on the engineering aspect of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. However, it is important to note that this is not Brazils first time hosting. They also hosted the 1950 World Cup. This was the first World Cup after WWII in which few countries participated, opting to focus on rebuilding (Vinton 7). In WWII Brazil suffered minimal losses when compared to much of Europe, allowing Brazil to host the games uncontested and also to build Macarena Stadium, which at the time was the largest stadium in the world (Vinton 7). Sixty-four years later Brazil once again faced no competition in bidding for the World Cup. Unfortunately, Brazilian officials are known for their “lack of transparency in their failures to control costs and adhere to deadlines” (Vinton 7). One contractor stated, “for Brazil money is no issue, I don’t know where they are getting it from but they are spending an incredible amount on the World Cup” (Conti 51). The expected cost of the World Cup is $1.6 Billion, more 85% of the cost placed on taxpayers (Conti 51). When just two years prior there were constant protests against hosting the Confederations Cup (Conti 51). At first glance the massive $10.8 Billion cost seems justified when they are also set to host the 2016 Summer Olympics, however for the $3.4 Billion it costs Brazil to construct 12 new stadiums, both of the previous hosts, South Africa and Germany built
Brazil is bound to host in a two-year span the largest sport events in the World, The 2014 Soccer World Cup and The Olympic games in 2016. The country will attract a lot of investors looking for some brand exposure since the whole world will have their eyes turned to this tropical country. These events present opportunities for Brazil to benefit from tourism and prove to the world that it is ready to take its place as an important piece of global governance. Although Brazil has a flourishing economy, it still has many characteristics of a third world country. Social issues remain present in the country’s politics. There are several concerns regarding the capability of an emerging country to host events with that stature.
The FIFA survey continues to prove that soccer, A.K.A. football, is the world’s #1 sport. There are about 240 million people in the world that play soccer from more than 200 countries. It is one of the most popular sports in the world that many people play now. It does take some time to learn the sport but, it shouldn’t be hard to learn it if you have the time and, put in a lot of effort.
All testimonies offered in the Panorama exposé were provided through a disguised voice, appearance, or both, save one; Mel Brennan, formerly a lecturer at Towson University in the United States (and from 2001–2003 Head of Special Projects for CONCACAF, a liaison to the e-FIFA project and a 2002 FIFA World Cup delegate), became the first high-level football insider to go public with substantial allegations of greed, corruption, nonfeasance and malfeasance by CONCACAF and FIFA leadership. During the Panorama exposé, Brennan—the highest-level African-American in the history of world football governance—joined Jennings, Trinidadian journalist LisanaLiburd and many others in exposing allegedly inappropriate allocations of money at CONCACAF, and drew connections between ostensible CONCACAF criminality and similar behaviors ...
Let me first apologize about the amount of emails that have been sent and the hectic first week of basketball about the practice schedules. I know everyone is busy, so it's hard to have a time that is going to be good for everyone, but thank you for the patience and support. Good news though, we have figured out our practice schedule, so it will minimize the conflict that was happening with band. Instead of 3:45 on Mondays, we will now be starting at 4:15, that way the girls will only be missing 15 minutes of practice instead of the 45 minutes. However, our principal does not like the kids hanging out in the halls after school waiting for basketball to start. I am hoping to get a couple parent volunteers that can come after
How many of you know that the Summer Olympics are in Rio this year? What has been happening to Brazil will possibly serve as a lesson to other countries wanting to host the Olympics (Navarro-Garcia). The 2016 Summer Olympics are expected to bring in around 500,000 people to Brazil (?Zika concerns mount?). There is still many problems occurring in Rio right now, from the Zika virus, to polluted waters and also a breaking economy. ?President Obama has asked congress for $1.8 billion in emergency funding for this epidemic? (Ford). The cost of moving the Olympics this late in the year would hurt Brazil?s economy tremendously. They?ve already invested millions of dollars into these games. Therefore,
Soccer has been around for a very long time. Many people around the world play soccer. An abundance of people love soccer, but just as many people hate soccer; they prefer hockey, baseball, or football. Football is just an Americanized version of soccer. Here are three interesting things about soccer.
Attention Getter: Mia Hamm. Peyton Manning. Steve Nash. Here are just a few great athletes that most of us have heard of. But what is it that makes us look up to them? What is it that makes them great? The truth is that sports are only a small part of what makes a person worthy of looking up to.
Changes can be made to try to make the sport safer, but as time goes on players will continue to get bigger and stronger, and we can’t change the fact that it is a full contact sport. Injuries will be inevitable, some will be minor and others can be fatal. Is a human life worth less than money or entertainment? Players risk the chance of a healthy future every time they step on the field. The human body is not made to take that continuous and ferocious impact game after game. Many players sell themselves short while putting their bodies in harm’s way which increases their probability of health complications down the road. If the violent aspect of the game is not addressed, it will negatively impact the future of players and the sport. Hopefully, the studies and research that is made public can somehow find a way to make the game safer for the players. Until that day comes, football is much too dangerous and not worth the
The FIFA’s executives and Officials days of freedom are numbered. Since May 2015 evidence has been released that can incriminate the sixteen members involved in the FIFA scandal. New evidence is released weekly about the FIFA corruption scandal and there comes a point where the arrest need to start to help the organization get passed the scandal. The questions at the start of the investigation were is FIFA actually corrupted? Did FIFA accept bribes during the World Cup voting process? Now the questions have shifted towards when will Sepp Blatter resign or get convicted? Will more evidence get uncovered in the upcoming weeks that will convict more FIFA officials? And can anyone be trusted to run FIFA? FIFA’s problems began with the president’s
Soccer the most popular sport in the world, since is the sport with more active players with around 270 million athletes. By having registered so many players, it’s not surprising that this sport has more fans than any other sport worldwide. Every team looks for a player that moves the ball, and that creates plays to score. This means a person that pass the ball through the entire game. To pass the ball in a proper way is one of the main skills a player needs to play soccer. Passing the ball, keeps the game going. Without being able to pass the ball accurately to your teammates, more than likely your team won’t be able to score a goal. The key for passing is to keep things simple. This means passing the ball to your nearest teammate that is not marked by an opponent.
Once again, after a successful season, Shadle Park was defeated by a Big 9 school in the first game of the regional tournament. This reoccurring event has led many to believe that the four year football program puts GSL students at a disadvantage compared to other districts. A junior high school football program would not only increase the competitiveness of the students but also have more important consequences.
On top of this I collected a number of newspaper articles and publications relating to the topic, to illustrate the debate that was going on in the city during the time I was there. My study group therefore was very small and consisted of a small number of business owners within the PortMiami area. I prepared my interviews using a set of organised questions and decided to go for a more of a discussion based approach so I could ask questions following on from my original set questions. The questions I asked were related to impacts that particular stadium developments have had on the city, and whether (for business owners) their businesses have profited from the development or redevelopment of certain stadiums within the
The guilt of the player involved in many of these cases can be irrelevant. As one sponsorship industry expert says: 'A sports star may be cleared of any wrongdoing following the emergence of a scandal, but would you put him back on the road for your brand? I know I wouldn't.'
In stadiums, parks and fields all across America, many youth participate in a journey through defeat, heartbreak, hard work, and success. Practicing for hours, rain or shine, to be able to snag that game winning touchdown in the back of the endzone. Although football comes with many risks and dangers, I strongly believe that kids and teens should be allowed to play football because it promotes leadership, teamwork, and requires significant amounts of exercise and cardiovascular activity, and other contact sports are just as dangerous.
If Brazil can take advantage of these strengths then they will be able to continue the growth they have been enjoying over recent years. The country have enough oil and gas reserves to make Brazil self-sustaining, with some to spare which can be sold abroad. Another strength Brazil have is the fact they actually have more fresh water than any other country in the world. As climate change will soon become to make water scarcer than ever before, and this will in turn make Brazil an extremely attractive prospect for people wanting to either invest or live there. The World Cup this summer was a tremendous success and this tournament, along with the build up to the Olympics that will take place in Brazil in 2016, has massively improved and is continually improving the basic physical and organisational infrastructure whilst attracting major international investors into the country. Hosting the Olympics isn’t generally a profitable investment due to the massive expenditures required throughout the tournament, however, the event like the World Cup, will give the country a massive global
