My View
First, when considering dualism, is it conceivable to have a physical drug that can kill something that has no physical attributes? Is it possible to have to have a physical drug that can kill something separate from the body? It seems such a drug would be impossible in principle regardless if you’re a dualist. Perhaps not as much to someone who believes that the mind is wholly separate from the body (still seems a little absurd) but it is important to note that dualism does not require that the mind and body be independent as the story suggests but just merely separate. If dualism truly entailed that a body without a mind could operate exactly as though it had a mind there is definitely something a little wrong with it however it

If there were such a drug that work to get rid of the soul it is most likely is going to get rid of the body as well. The fact that it isn’t possible does not validate Smullyan’s point (if this is an attack on dualism) but rather it shows why the point is (in my opinion) senseless in the first place. I don’t believe Smullyans is necessarily strictly arguing against dualism but he is mischaracterizing it slightly by stating that mind and matter are not just separate substances but independent substances capable of existing apart from one another without any observable …show more content…
Colloquially called ‘auto-pilot’ I would venture to guess that these instances must be few and far between else we probably would not be long for this world. My issue with this and our dualist would be the ‘come to’ stage that never arrives. Surely Armstrong would think such a drug is impossible in principle because someone stuck in auto-pilot would indefinitely find him or herself in a situation where that mode would conclude in death. Armstrong believes that Behaviorism is problematic but a step in the right direction and that while mental states cannot be identified with behaviours, mental states are linked to behaviours and also believes that dispositions are the inner mental states that cause behaviour. The physical and neurological effects from the use and abuse of stimulants, sedatives, hallucinogens, organic solvents, and athletic performance enhancing drugs will be discussed in order to better comprehend why certain individuals expose themselves to such dangerous materials with seemingly no regard to the permanent consequences associated with such actions.
