Sleep-over by Bonnie Jo Campbell is more than the usual teenager maturity story; between the lines, and behind the symbolism there is an underlying meaning. I believe the author is speaking from experience when telling this story. This story may be the authors depiction of the event of how she remembers it. From the title to the last sentence, Campbell expresses literary devices, natural languages, and involves her personal life into the story making it more than a teenage tale.
”The Blackpool Letters” jumps right out of the gate with “Shotgun.” Deeply reverbed piano (slightly de-tuned) and understated synths roll quietly before waking you up with heavy double time drum hits and big coarsely chopped guitar down strokes. Alternative by nature, this is my favorite rocker on the disk. Performance highlight is when Scott’s last vocal note of the chorus lingers to melt brilliantly into the first two measures of the bridge before fading. And even though Liss has nothing to do with Ozzy, the lead work of Dave Rosen jumps in out of left field with tonal qualities of Randy Rhoades. Frenetic synthetic and expressively manic, its Hungarian (harmonic) minor mode...
Imagine it – all the rules you were raised to follow, all the beliefs and norms, everything conventional, shattered. Now imagine It – Clara Bow, the It Girl. The epitome of the avant-garde woman, the archetype of the flapper, was America’s new, young movie actress of the 1920’s. Modern women of the day took heed to Bow’s fresh style and, in turn, yielded danger to the conventional America. Yet Bow’s contagious and popular attitude came with its weaknesses - dealing with fame and the motion picture industry in the 1920’s. Despite this ultimate downfall, Clara’s flair reformed the youth and motion pictures of her time.
These movies allowed female characters to embody all the contradictions that could make them a woman. They were portrayed as the “femme fatale” and also “mother,” the “seductress” and at the same time the “saint,” (Newsom, 2011). Female characters were multi-faceted during this time and had much more complexity and interesting qualities than in the movies we watch today. Today, only 16% of protagonists in movies are female, and the portrayal of these women is one of sexualization and dependence rather than complexity (Newsom, 2011).
In “Sleepers” by Lorenzo Carcaterra is a book that was written and made into a Movie. The cycle of life always ends in death, but the frightful aspect of death is not necessarily death itself, but the concept of timing. Mark Twain states that “The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man who lives fully is prepared to die anytime” which means people’s fear of dying stems from their fear of living, and this frightful emotion takes over people’s lives and prevents them from living each day like it is their last. This fear prevents many from taking action on their dreams and ambitions which inevitably is giving one’s life up too quickly. Dylan Thomas, a famous contemporary author, believes existence is taken advantage of and when one’s existence is threatened, most people are too quick to give up. In Thomas’s “Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night,” the speaker of the poem confronts his deceased father about releasing one of the most valuable things in nature: life (Pattern #3).
As a pediatric Sleep Coach, I define sleep training as anything a parent does to help their child sleep better during the night or for naps. It often includes working on having a child fall asleep without being held or fed.

In recent years, there have been studies on beauty sleep and the perceived health, attractiveness of sleep deprived people. Researchers try to ascertain what happens to individuals when they get a good nights sleep and when they are sleep deprived. What happens to the body when it doesn’t get a full nights rest? It is known that when the body is at rest and in deep sleep, it will restore itself. If someone doesn’t get a full nights rest, they didn’t give their body a chance to repair and the person will appear to look unhealthy. "Poor sleep also equals slower cell turnover, which leaves your skin less glow-y, and can accelerate the signs of aging. In the deepest stages of sleep, your body goes into full-on restoration mode, secreting growth hormones that work to repair damaged cells. Not enough deep sleep means not enough growth hormones and not enough cell repair."(Denise) It is common knowledge that having a full nights rest has positive effects to the body, but does this positive effect also reflect according to the persons appearance? Are people able to perceive that someone is sleep deprived or not?
Although the Stanford Sleepiness Scale was the most interesting to analyze, the weeklong sleep diary allowed me to see aspects that the “Alertness Test” did not. The two biggest pieces were the effects of the program on my sleep latency and the negative impact alcohol has on sleep. First, it was one of my goals to improve my sleep latency, as during the 4 weeks of the sleep diary, my sleep latency was typically 15 minutes (higher during stressful days ex/basketball games). In order to allow for the sleep latency to decrease during emotional times, I decided to implement a 15-minute routine before I went to bed. Without a doubt, the part of the routine that was the most beneficial was turning my phone to airplane mode. Like many college students,
This paper contains a journal description of my Service Learning Applied Learning Experience (ALE). My ALE involved developing an interesting way to inform others about the importance of sleep hygiene. This sleep hygiene project was begun so that we could spread awareness in a fun way to the college population of how important sleep is in our lives. The main purpose of creating this booth at the Fall Poo-looza was to focus on the benefits of maintaining good sleep hygiene in order to decrease the amount of sleep people lose.
Sleep is a behavioral state characterized by little physical activity and almost no awareness of the outside world. Sleep is actually made up of two separate and distinctly different states called REM sleep (rapid eye movement) and NREM sleep (non-rapid eye movement). With NREM sleep it is further divided into stage 1-4 based on the size and the speed of the brain waves. Step one is the stage when you drift off to sleep or doze off. For example people doze off in class because you are bored and have nothing to do but listen to the teacher talk. Some parents may call it a cat nape when their kids go to sleep for about ten minutes or so. The second stage is called an intermediate stage of sleep. That is when
Snoring is the vibration of respiratory structures and the resulting sound due to obstructed air movement during breathing while sleeping. Snoring is a serious problem of both genders but mostly overweight males are at risk and it can become more serious with age. It can heavily affect your own sleep as well as your partner’s sleep. In fact, snoring often disrupts the sleep of family members and partners more than it affects the snorer.
As a result of the varying circumstances that helped evolve the story the popularity of the sleeping Beauty soared causing it to become a worldwide phenomenon. As opposed to its relative obscurity of the earlier versions one has to ask if the story didn't change would we even have the story today?
Scientist have showed that at least on sixty species of bacteria honey has powerful anti-bacterial properties unlike some antibiotics, which are ineffective on certain types of bacteria. Since ancient times by many religious faiths and recorded in ancient scriptures the importance of honey have been praised. The pH of honey lies between 3.2 and 4.5, the growth of many bacteria is ceased as a result of it acidic pH.
