As the slave population in the United States of America grew to 500,000 in 1176, documenting slavery as part of the American Revolution became increasingly important. America was rooted in slavery; and it contributed to the economy and social structure. The revolution forced citizens of the new nation to be conscious of slavery and its potential dismissal from every day life. Two articles that prove slavery only succeeded because of the false reality that slave owners created and the conformity to this reality by slaves are; George Fitzhugh who defends the proslavery argument and Frederick Douglass who supports a desire for freedom.
The history of abolition directly relates to the many obstacles Americans faced when trying to change societies laws and ideas about slavery. Slavery was an accepted facet of life because it was part of the old institution; it existed in every colony and played an integral part in shaping social structure and forming successful economies. The Virginian Law of 1780 awarded all veterans of the war on independence with 300 acres of land and a slave. Another example that shows how accepting Americans were of slavery is that every founding father owned slaves during their lifetime. Owning slaves became something people thought they were entitled to, it was a right that they had. George Fitzhugh defends the proslavery argument that was shared among slave-owners.
In 1854, George Fitzhugh wrote Sociology for the South, or the Failure of Free Society. He based his writing off of the idea that “All workers, white and black, North and South, would fare better having individual owners, rather than living as slaves for the economic marketplace”. As a result of Cry Liberty and the daring rebellion from so many brave slaves this book paints a visual art in the minds of those who pick this book up. Not only does Hoffer bring us back to the year 1739, he brought me back in time and I felt as if I was one of the slaves marching down Pon Pon street in hopes to make it to Spanish Florida to be set free. I enjoyed the historical adventure and the significant events that lead to what we know now as The Great Stono River Slave Rebellion.
In the article, Slavery and Freedom: The American Paradox by Edmund S. Morgan, he begins explaining the impacts and the role of slavery in American history. Morgan suggests that the impact of slavery should not be over looked. The central idea of this article is focused around liberty and equality being joined by slavery throughout history. These contradictory ideas were developing independently at an identical period of time. Morgan expounds upon this idea.
Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass also proves that Fitzhugh statement that slavery prevents rivalry between the master and slave is wrong. Fitzhugh explains that with equality among men they all aspire for self-promotion and self-elevation. In “Slavery Justified” Fitzhugh writes, “A state of independence always begets more or less jealousy rivalry and hostility”
In sum, all of these key arguments exist in “The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass” because of the institution of slavery and its resulting lack of freedom that was used to defend it. This text’s arguments could all be gathered together under the common element of inequality and how it affected the practical, social, and even spiritual lives of the slaves.
This excellent biography fluently tells the life story of Douglass; one of the 19th centuries's most famous writers and speakers on abolitionist and human rights causes. It traces his life from his birth as a slave in Maryland, through his self-education, escape to freedom, and subsequent lionization as a renowned orator in England and the United States. Fascinating, too, are accounts of the era's politics, such as the racist views held by some abolitionist leaders and the ways in which many policies made in post-Civil War times have worked to the detriment of today's civil rights movement. The chapter on Frederick Douglass and John Brown is, in itself, interesting enough to commend this powerful biography. The seldom-seen photographs, the careful chapter notes, documentation, and acknowledgements will encourage anybody to keep on learning about Frederick Douglass.

Lord Dunmore, a governor of Virginia, promised freedom to any slave that enlisted into the British army. Colonists’ previously denied enlistment to African American’s because of the response of the South, but hesitantly changed their minds in fear of slaves rebelling against them. The first arrivals of Africans in America were treated similarly to the indentured servants in Europe. Black servants were treated differently from the white servants and by 1740 the slavery system in colonial America was fully developed.
Slavery was abolished. There was resistance to the idea of the happy slave in the north, but the greatest opposition would have come from men like Fredrick Douglass. Douglass had lived as a slave and a freeman, he had suffered as a slave and become a freeman. Men and women who had suffered the burden of slavery and tasted freedom would have spoken out against Fitzhugh’s belief that slaves were happy. Some people may have believed Fitzhugh’s words and consider the black slaves of the south cared for. However, the truth of the south was that the economy of the south needed slaves to survive. George Fitzhugh, a well-known planter and lawyer from Virginia, who believes that slavery is a necessary evil. This, however, is untrue, slavery is morally wrong and by enslaving people we are abducting them of their natural rights. Fitzhugh describes slavery as “impractical and self-destructive”, but isn’t it self-destructive to enslave and force manual labor to beings of the same species, one of which are not so different from ourselves other than the tone of their skin? Slavery has and always will be iniquitous. The truth is, all men are created and should be treated as equal because everyone has something to offer. Although Fitzhugh attempts to persuade people that slavery is a requisite, slavery is an atrocious act that is unnecessary to society.
Frederick Douglass’ source, “The Desire for Freedom” was written in 1845. He was born into slavery in 1818 and became an important figure in the fight for abolition. Douglass was also involved in other reform movements such as the women’s rights movement. He “experienced slavery in all its variety, from work as a house servant and as a skilled craftsman in Baltimore shipyard to labor as a plantation field hand” (Pg.207¬). “The Desire for Freedom” was meant to document how his life was within slavery and how his education could someday help him escape it. Douglass meant to speak to American slaves and those who did not really understand slavery in order to help persuade everyone that life was meant to be lived freely. In order to obtain this future, Douglass wrote about his own personal experience and how he believed that enslavers were “in no other light than a band of successful robbers, who had left their homes, and gone to Africa, and stolen us from our homes, and in a strange land reduced us to slavery” (Pg. 208). This source brings on the idea that slaves were willing to fight back, wanted to be educated, and, most importantly, wanted the chance to live life freely.

Slavery was the main resource used in the Chesapeake tobacco plantations. The conditions in the Chesapeake region were difficult, which lead to malnutrition, disease, and even death. Slaves were a cheap and an abundant resource, which could be easily replaced at any time. The Chesapeake region’s tobacco industries grew and flourished on the intolerable and inhumane acts of slavery.
Farming, sewing, and taking care of livestock were just a few responsibilities that were left to slaves during the 1600's. White families received all of the benefits from the work done, yet they rarely had to lift a finger, unless it was to correct a slave. Today's generation reads about slavery and regards it as morally wrong. While I agree that slavery was one of America's greatest wrongdoings, it paved the way for America as we know it today.
For Edmund S. Morgan American slavery and American freedom go together hand in hand. Morgan argues that many historians seem to ignore writing about the early development of American freedom simply because it was shaped by the rise of slavery. It seems ironic that while one group of people is trying to break the mold and become liberated, that same group is making others confined and shattering their respectability. The aspects of liberty, race, and slavery are closely intertwined in the essay, 'Slavery and Freedom: The American Paradox.'
